KLN 90B version 1.0 released

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. In anticipation of the upcoming release of the Black Square Dukes, version 1.0 of the open-source KLN 90B has now been released:
https://github.com/falcon71/kln90b/releases/latest

This project has been a labor of love for this old and clunky, yet very capable GPS unit. While the device is horribly outdated these days, I hope you too will feel that mastering it, is a very rewarding and unique experience.

Version 1 was developed solely based on the real manuals and some videos and photos I found online. I'm sure there will still be bugs left and cases where the KLN does not behave exactly like the real unit. If you have access to the real device or if you notice any differences, please reach out to me. My goal is to have a pixel perfect replication of the real unit right down to the bugs the real device may have.

I have created a Discord server if you need help, have any feedback or just want to talk about the KLN 90B:
https://discord.gg/FNr6MpPTUh

I would like to thank Nick from Black Square for his trust in this simulation, his valuable feedback and his patience in getting the integration just right. It has been a pleasure working with him and I am excited to see his excellent Dukes releasing very soon now with support for the KLN 90B.

With version 1.0 and a fully working implementation in the Dukes, I no longer expect any breaking changes. If you are an aircraft developer and would like to integrate the KLN 90B into your aircraft, feel free to contact me. You will also find further information for integration in the wiki: https://github.com/falcon71/kln90b/wiki

Here is a link to the real manuals of the KLN 90B, if you would like to be prepared for the release of the Dukes:

Amazing Grace! Thank You Falcon71.

Hey falcon,

I just want to say, it warms my heart more than folks could know to see something of this complexity use the MSFS Avionics Framework so completely. This thing is truly cool and I can't wait to play with it in the Dukes. It being OSS is absolutely the cherry on top.

When we first talked to MS, one of my pitches to Jorg was "I'm a platform guy, let us build a platform for these awesome folks so that people don't have to reinvent the wheel every day, so that they can do much, much more easily what we're doing." I'm exceptionally grateful and humbled to have gotten the opportunity to do so, an to actually see it used like this and with and open source project to boot just blows me away; it's everything I hoped 3 years ago.

So, just wanted to say thank you, what generous and awesome gift.

-Matt

This is great. It’s nice to have realistic navigation options to kit older aircraft with and learn something new.
