XP12.1 Crash to Desktop

Featured Replies

Hi,

Time to investigate this hard crash to desktop, see if there is anything in the event log. I haven't seen one of these in some time. Just after take off at 16:30 into the video. Noticed some very bad frame rates with this nasty weather, 17fps.

Hi,

Looks like there are two entries in the event log that refer to Volume Shadow Copy Service error.

Error: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x8007045b, A system shutdown is in progress. The second error is associated with the first.

Both point to a windows update, yet no updates are scheduled. If updates take place it's at 2am.

Hi Everybody,

Looks like a failed update install on Windows part, (KB5034441) was the issue. Only way to update was to use Create Media Tool.

I Ran Create Media tool to update Windows 10: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

After Installing the Media tool, Windows showed the file that it couldn't install and would error out on, as was as few other missing updates.

On the first update run through the original update that had failed, failed once again. The updates that were missing were installed and called for a reboot.

After a reboot and during the next update, KB5036892 stopped at 20% and would not continue. A reboot was required.

When the system came back online, it started downloading and installed update KB50434685 and also installed KB5036892. Another reboot was needed.

On the next run, Windows update then downloaded and installed KB5034441 without fail this time.

After yet another reboot, Windows Updates now reporting the system is up to date, no more update errors!

If you're having Windows update issues with Windows 10, the Create Media Tool may help. Now lets see if I can get this run in tonight.

If you are running windows 11, than you will have a new headache as MS$ will be forcing bitlocker on all machines new and fresh installs, with no options to not do it. Welcome to our new world of big tech control.

Never made the jump over to 11 even though Windows keeps begging me to move up on their updates page. I have five machines still on Win 10 pro, I won't move to 11 until I have to make the move.

Ill be biting teh bullet and going to linux. No way will I ever give MS$ my data

Have to use 11 at work every day. Under the hood, it's totally okay, but the incredibly dumbed down UI (task bar, start menu, context menus) is something I will never comprehend.

Hint: Make the Linux move while Windows 10 is still alive and transition slowly. That way, if you hit a transition wall, you won't have to move from one mess to another. Chances are that by the time Win 10 is end of life, most, if not all of your time will be spent in Linux anyway.

Being using Linux for years on all my laptops, even have a tablet runs linux.

Is dual boot still a thing? Did that years ago but now I'm thinking of it again...

Yup. I've been boot two Linux distros and Windows using a third party boot loader for many years now and it works just fine for day to day usage. However, in very rare cases, one of the OSes may decide to overwrite said bootloader during a major update, so knowing your emergency flows is still required nonetheless.
