June 5, 20241 yr Many summer holidays in my childhood were spent in North Wales. My dad's ethos was "Why go abroad when we live in such a beautiful country?" We didn't have an overseas holiday till I was 18. We travelled on the Talyllyn ('Llyn' is Welsh for lake), Ffestiniog, Bala Lake, Llanberis, and Welshpool & Llanfair narrow gauge railways during those holidays. Most of the "Great Little Trains of Wales", as they are jointly marketed, originally carried the mined slate from the quarries and mines.
