August 1, 20241 yr Is it typically started after all pax and cargo is loaded and doors closed, or when would the APU typically be started? What are outside conditions like? Is it summer and the ground air can’t keep the cabin cool? Those cabins can get mighty hot on the 737s when you board them up. Do you need heat in the winter time? I personally start the APU as close to departure time as I can to save fuel but if it’s remotely toasty in the back before we board, I’m firing up the APU. My passengers’ comfort comes first before fuel savings while at the gate. FAA: ATP-ME, 737 CA, enough time in the 757/767 to be dangerous 🤠 Matt Kubanda, 7950X3D, 64GB RAM, RTX 5090@4k, MSFS 2024
August 1, 20241 yr Author Matt, are there situations outside of need where you aren't to start the APU,, perhaps when stair boarding is done on a ramp or what have you, or no it's all based on need for power. And if there is ground power available is that quite limited insofar as passenger comfort is concerned so the APU gets started even when there is ground power? Thanks! To your second question, yes, GPU or not, if it’s u comfortable in the cabin, start the APU. I’ve seen cabin temps go above 40c and I rushed everyone off the jet. The PC air couldn’t cool the cabin. We didn’t have an APU then. It was MELed. it’s one of those things where it’s about being a pilot/captain, your priority are those passengers. Everything you do should be for the safety of said pax. Right? for the first question, there are airports and instances where having the APU on prohibited at certain gates or situations where having the APU on would make things really inhospitable. We prep for those as a crew and an airline. Then at that point, we start up the APU at the very last minute.
