August 18, 20241 yr Why is the vector data so rubbish in Greenland? Large sections of small lakes in Greenland are black, but I have only just realised that this is because there is a serious mismatch between the position of the vector overlay and the underlying photoscenery image (the link below illustrates an example of this). In addition, the resolution of the vector data is also low, which makes it look even worse. https://www.mediafire.com/view/mqgqhw4om367usy/Screenshot_%28458%29.jpg/file On a side note, lots of small lakes in Greenland appear to be black, and I think that this is because these areas have no vector information whatsoever. The annoying part is that these "black lakes" can also be seen near ESNQ Kiruna in Sweden, and there are probably other examples elsewhere. EDIT: Screenshot link corrected. August 18, 20241 yr I would assume this is because Greenland hasn't been surveyed in detail -- it's a big, sparsely populated place, and there probably just isn't anyone who needs detailed maps of it (except for specific parts), so it hasn't gotten done yet.
August 19, 20241 yr The same issue exist in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. parts of the province has many lakes missing in MSFS. In some cases only half of a lake shows up and the other half is missing. This matches up with the data in open street maps. This probably means that MSFS is using free data instead of buying better quality vector data. John C. Specs: black box thingy with spinning fans, lights and a bunch of wires that go to screens with pretty colours and a keyboard with many keys. The black box thingy also has a push button activated coffee cup holder. John C.
August 19, 20241 yr It's expensive and difficult to map a place like Greenland, weather always working against you and it's a vast, empty place with few means of rescue if things do go wrong which also means there's much less incentive to do highly detailed imagery and data mapping of the place. August 19, 20241 yr There is a Greenland Package on flightsim.to which also includes fixes for lakes etc. The author does not explain whether he invented those corrections himself or used available data. As long as it looks believable I think it does not really matter much. I am not sure whether this data is even available. Detailed sattelite data might not be available for these extreme north and south regions and sending aircraft there is expensive and not free of risk. perhaps someday automated drones could scan this region at reasonable cost.
