FreeFlight >30 Minutes Starlink

Featured Replies

I'm using Starlink over wifi and get about 100-150 down.  Starlink has a lot of micro drop outs and some latency.  This doesn't affect any other applications or streaming I use.

I can get to the main menu in about 5 minutes however when trying to load a free flight default aircraft to a default airport it can take from 30 minutes to well over an hour.  Once I'm at my home airport KDWH there is no scenery.  I get numerous low bandwidth warnings.  When I fly (default 152 for simplicity) the instruments do not fully load.  I can see some scenery but many places are a blur.  This is all with the default settings.  I tried to change some settings like no ai traffic to lower the bandwidth demand.

I rarely have a bandwidth warning on msfs 2020 but it does happen.  But so far this is unplayable for me.  I don't know if it's the server overload issues or that Starlink in my configuration will not be sufficient to run msfs 2024.  Fortunately I am scheduled to have fiber hooked up in a week or so if all goes well.

I opened a ticket and got a canned response on rebooting, logging in and out, update your computer but I've tried all of that.

In the mean time if anyone has any suggestions I sure would appreciate hearing them.

Thx and glad some of you are out flying instead of watching the spinner!

One of the reviews highlighted a noticeable difference in performance between career mode and missions and free flight.  They showed low CPU/GPU usage in free flight with reduced performance down to single digit FPS but mentioned that career mode and missions did not suffer almost as though they were a pre-canned container within the sim itself.

While I did see their numbers in the review I can't confirm this myself or if it was just something on their end.  Have you tried anything but free flight?  Not saying it will help and I have seen reviewers on 30-50 down reviewing without issue but the micro drops and latency could be an issue as well.

It's also tough to compare to 2020 as far less was being streamed for an average flight.

Hello! Glad to see another Starlink user! I’m not sure if this helps but aside from the initial issues upon relief I have been able to login and make a few successful flights aside from the low bandwidth warning from time to time, but nothing on the level that you’re having. (My speeds are around 260mbps latency of 26ms) Hopefully your issues are just temporary.

Another Starlink user here. Are you in a populated area where you would be competing with many other starlink users? Not sure if thats a thing or not but just thought I'd ask. As for me, after the day one server issues, I've been enjoying both free flight and career mode flights with little to no delay. If anything, the Career Mode flights take a bit longer to load than the free flight. I too am over wifi and not cable connected to the modem but it is in a metal trailer and like six feet (2 meters?!) away. Also on an island 30nm away from the real world so not too many starlink users around me to compete for bandwidth.

Another Starlink user here too. I linked Starlink direct to a new Asus modem, with a lead direct into my PC (cannot remember the technical term) so only the rest of users use WiFi. We only get circa 150 mbps here but that seems to satisfactorily run 2024.  I also use Express VPN and whilst I would normally set it to the UK rightly or wrongly I think I am getting better 2024 performance pointing the vpn to Madrid.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, I did find that a mission worked better but I don't fly those too much.  I suppose I could try career mode.

I thought of trying a direct ethernet connection to my router.  I'll see if that helps.

I'm in a rural area.  There probably aren't too many Starlink competitors however I do have a lot of trees so my speed is limited by obstructions.

I'll try the vpn again.  It didn't seem to help but I'll try it again.

It sounds like I have some other issue.  I tried everything on the Microsoft ticket.  I bought Aviator Edition and the xbox app shows both editions. I wonder if there is something going on there.

Update:

Microsoft Flight Simulator Zen Desk was actually pretty responsive and helpful.  Don't hesitate to open a ticket.

Things I changed:

Google DNS, IPFlush, and "Run as Administrator" to start the program.

Or maybe it's just that the servers drastically improved.  Anyway everything is running pretty well right now.
