Any special procedures for upgrading RAM?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have decided to upgrade my RAM in prep for MS2024 (not using it yet but have it installed). I just wondered is there anything I have to do, any special precautions or procedures I need to take, to replace the RAM, or is it simply just a case of old 2 out, new 2 in?

Many thanks all

I can add a couple of general things

  • Make sure to look at the two "sticks" to see if they are obscured by wires or water pump tubes. (You'll know in advance how big the job will be if you have to uninstall other hardware)
  • Read the RAM instructions as well as the motherboard instructions. Most of them want 2 "sticks" of ram in certain locations for best results
  • Be comfortable with BIOS as you may have to go into your BIOS to adjust the RAM timings to the specifications of your RAM
  • If all of that is good, remember to always ground yourself when opening up and entering the innards of your PC

This is all I could think of off the top of my head, hopefully others will fill in anything I may have missed

Also you need to make sure they are matched pairs if you want to run XMP profile, IE same speed and timings and the same make is best.

It is recommended not to mix RAM sticks from different batches. Not to mention different RAM sticks altogether. It might, and it will induce instability.

Thanks so much guys got 2 32GB Corsair sticks and followed all of your recommendations. Had to flash update my BIOS and was a bit wobbly at first because they were running at full 6400mHz, so it was crashing and failing to boot, so I turned the XMP profile off and now they're running at a base 4800 I think, and touch wood, everything seems stable and happy now.

Thanks very much for your help folks

On a 4 slot memory MB they are paired 1-3 AND 2-4, using two slot next to each other will crash in XMP. On ASUS MB 2-4 are the best for 2 sticks for XMP.
