WOW...flew into OGG first time in 2024 (those winds)

Featured Replies

This morning and afternoon I flew the inibuilds A321N in UA colors from SFO to OGG.  First time I tried the A321N since FS2024 first came out and I am happy to report its much more stable today then it was this time last month.  Its NO Fenix by any stretch of the imagination but not a half bad model.  From my uneducated seat of the pants butt dyno it felt pretty accurate as far as performance and fuel burn is concerned.  Maybe a tad over powered but maybe the NEO is for reals?

What really impressed me was flying into OGG.  This airport is known for turbulence and rolling winds between the mountain ranges in the valley make for a challenging approach.  I am happy to report this is the 1st sim in the history of flight simulators that got it right.  The twisting motion was so bad I had a hard time keeping the nose lined up.  Some last minute wind shier and a twisting wind made be abort my landing and go around again for safety.  2nd time I got in without much further issue.

Pretty impressed with FS2024 in this regard.  It probably helps I am using Active Sky and Realturb but I think it was the additional wind modeling in FS2024 that made it more usable.

Just an observation I wanted to share!

PHOG is always a challenge to fly into. I go there a couple times a month. Almost always, its's CAVU but the daily winds make it a real challenge.

Flown into OGG many times in real life as a passenger.  Every single time it was a bumpy ride in and often the winds definitely made the landing challenging.  Experienced one go around in a DC-10 a long time ago.  Captain said he would have touched down a bit late thanks to the wind and with an aircraft the size of DC-10 and the somewhat short runway at OGG its an automatic go around.  I miss those jumbo's flying in all the time there!

I am glad to see the nasty winds somewhat modeled at that airport in FS2024.  Of coarse as good as FS2024 is at times it can be a hot mess.  On my return flight back to SFO my A321 started going crazy and without me knowing about it decided to fly south.  Ironically it thought it was on coarse.  Just turned it off in frustration!

It makes a whole LOT of a difference to use AS and Realturb because default effects are still rather tame!
