PMDG 737-600 Re-visited in FS2024 - Flying SAS in Sweden...

Featured Replies

First of all, as you might know the MSFS marketplace is currently a strange mixture of MSFS2020 and MSFS2024 entities (duly tagged, of course, and easy to filter per your preference). And the PMDG 737-600 has been one of my perennial Boeing favorites since the earliest days I'd experienced the very first PMDG a/c (737-600/700 NG was released for FS9 in 2003, 22 years ago, but the memory of it is still fresh in my mind...🙂...the -600/-700 NG combo would appear in FSX 8 years later in 2011 but the P3D aviators would wait another 4 years for it till 2015...). Today, I am flying the same PMDG 737-600 (from the same esteemed publisher) here for the 2nd time in MSFS2024.

I'd tested the PMDG 737-600 once before in MSFS2024, and I recall that everything had worked out well with this a/c (within my domain of expertise) except for the fact that the EFB had caused me "CTD" (actually more like "CTT" i.e., Crash To TV-top...🙂...I'm on Xbox...). In the current (MSFS2024) Marketplace, the PMDG 737-600 is prominently displayed with the warning sign "Unverified"; but that did not deter this (fearless) Xbox Aviator...🙂...from trying it out one more time in MSFS2024. This is because I was determined to fly the 737-600 in the colors of Scandinavian (SAS) airline today. [Note: SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) is the national airline of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark; headquartered in Solna Municipality in Sweden]. To be precise, I've chosen here to fly the 737-600 in the "SAS Braathens" livery (one I am rather fond of), which once stood for Norway's largest airline that eventually got integrated into the mainline SAS Group. So, in my pictures below, instead of seeing three different national flags on the fuselage of this SAS 737, you'll spot only one flag, that of Norway.

In one of my earlier posts, I'd visited Norway, tracking Norway's longest and largest (Glomma) River for 300 miles from south to north (see the post if you like). I'd mentioned there that I was triggered for that Scandinavian tour by a visit to the local IKEA Store, which is actually Swedish in origin (Sweden and Norway share a border spanning 1,000+ miles; both countries prominently known for producing a large amount of wood and furniture, primarily due to their abundant (boreal) forests). IKEA had originated in 1943 when 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad opened a mail-order sales business, and then a furniture-resell outlet (the first IKEA store), in a small town in the southern tip of Sweden. From that humble beginning, IKEA is now the world's largest furniture retailer.

Whenever I catch sight of that large (bold and capitalized) blue IKEA sign (impossible to not notice) while merging into or exiting the local highway, I've often wondered what the acronym stands for...so, here we go...🙂...

I = (I)ngvar - Founder's first name
K = (K)amprad - Founder's last name
E = (E)lmtaryd - The family farm where Kamprad was born
A = (A)gunnaryd - The nearby village which was Kamprad's hometown

So, today, I wished to take a (virtual) trip in Sweden, Kamprad's (and IKEA's) home country. I have chosen to travel from north to south for this flight, from ESNQ/Kiruna Airport, which is the northernmost airport in Sweden, to ESSA/Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which is the main international airport serving Stockholm, the capital of Sweden (see a couple of shots of this airport, below). I've simulated a (RW) FlightAware Route between these two airports, with one exception. Right after lift-off, I've detoured about 40 miles west of Kiruna, to Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden. This landmark is denoted by the custom Waypoint "WPT02" on the Flight-Plan and the Navigational Display. The entire route (including the custom WPT) was flown under (automated) LNAV and VNAV guidance, except manually for a brief period while overflying this mountain peak (see images).

Respecting the (Publisher's) "Unverified" banner on this PMDG 737-600 simulation and also recalling the (CTD) failure of its EFB from my last tryout in MSFS2024/Xbox; I've stayed clear of the EFB for this flight (didn't touch it; after all we were all flying the PMDG a/c in MSFS for a very long time without an EFB...🙂...). Nonetheless, except for the lack of the EFB, the airplane flew blemish-free in my operation today (cannot find any fault with it), from takeoff to touchdown, guiding me perfectly from my origin to my destination (culminating with a smooth touchdown into ESSA ILS Runway 19R), including the precise overfly of Sweden's Kebnekaise (mountain), which, btw, looked remarkably similar to the images of it that I saw on-line.

Hope you enjoy this collection of images of the 737-600, the 737 NG member which was, in fact, launched by SAS (the same airline you see here) in March 1995. It's to be noted, however, that the first member of the 737 NG series was not the -600, but the -700, that was launched 2 years earlier in 1993 by Southwest Airlines (there was a period in my life when I used to often take the predominant SWA 737-700s from the (local) Midway Airport). The 737-700 also flew a year earlier in 1997 for SWA vs. the 737-600 that flew for the first time for SAS in 1998. Compared to about 70 737-600s, more than 1,100 737-700s were built; still, the 736 retains its place in history as a remarkable (and unique) airliner that found niche use with several operators including SAS that I've featured in this post (and of course it also remains popular among a (rare) few diehard virtual aviators around here...🙂...yours truly included...) ...

Thanks for viewing...!

Glad you like the Baby Boeing...🙂...

Cheers...!

Made me remember how much I miss the PMDG 737!

I'm willing to give it a try in v2024 as I've also seen others that say it works with a little finagling 🙂

@P_7878

IT WORKS!!!

All I had to do was drag it over from v2020.

I hear it needs to be hot started in the runway to be functional, but I can live with that until PMDG get the new version finished.

MANY thanks for the inspiration - now I can fly that lovely "little" BBJ business jet again 😁

Many thanks for your screenies, P_7878. I didn't try my baby 737 in 2024 yet. Now I will.

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

Appreciated the comment...🙂...Inspiration to fly occurs in both send/receive directions here...🙂...Anyway, glad this PMDG 737 worked out well for you in MSFS2024. As you know, I'm on Xbox, so, on your PC, it should probably fly even better...

Thanks, bernd. I know you're usually not a modern-jet flyer...🙂...though I've seen a few once in a while. The little classics are your specialty...🙂...All types are welcome, though...
