Preserving G2 usage on a new computer build

Featured Replies

I just built a brand new 9800X3D/5090 Win 11 Pro computer, and I'm able to run my HP Reverb G2 on it.  Here's what it took: a Win11 23H2 install .iso file and an install USB built with Rufus that uses that .iso file.

One huge issue with using that 23H2 .iso is that MS revoked its boot loader's certificate due to a boot loader vulnerability (so its boot loader no longer runs), but that can be worked around if secure boot is disabled in the bios.  But it doesn't stop there: the Win11 install insists on secure boot being enabled.  Fortunately the Rufus tool for building bootable USB drives has two work arounds for that: it can disable that check, and enable an install with the internet unconnected.  Google Rufus for the details on doing this.

After performing the USB Win11 Pro install using that USB drive, I edited the installed Win11 Group Policy to inhibit 24H2 installation (look that up with Google too). Then I enabled my WiFi network and directed Win11 to update itself, which it did fully without installing 24H2.  As a final touch, I reenabled secure boot and installed and ran the WMR Portal app, both which performed successfully.

Hope some find this useful.  My grand plan is to get a Pimax Dream Air SE before MS force feeds 24H2 to everyone, now back to flight simming.

Yeah, I'm dreading the day. 11th November I believe will be the day 23H2 reaches end of life. With any luck mbucchia will have a Win 11 G2 driver ready to take over from WMR.

I'm also hoping that mbucchia's Oasis Driver get released released in a full working state before that date.  And also hoping that Pimax hits a home run with their Dream Air SE, but IMO that's a bit of a long shot in comparison given the track records of either.

But from what I have read we will be able to continue with HP Reverb G2 since a Oasis driver is coming so no need for WMR.
