  1. I imagine 2020 development/maintenance will be over, but let's hope that 2020 (compatible) scenery servers will be maintained indefinitely, i.e. as long as there's a MSFS 20XX being maintained. Which begs the question: no more servers -> no more MSFS? I admit I won't be a day 0 purchaser, I'll watch it all unfold before jumping in.
  2. Glad you had the luxury of staying put. Back in 2017 when we missed going to see totality in Oregon we decided that in 2024 we'd be traveling out to Texas. We had the foresight to book everything months in advance thus dodging all the price gouging. Absolutely no regrets, joy only (plus a chance for a little sightseeing in Texas).
  3. Delivering 3.8 megatons of annihilation at supersonic speed, so glad it never flew its intended mission. I remember seeing one on the ground at a Mather Field airshow when I was 5. It proudly wore the SAC emblem and was roped off to close public access.
  4. Got to toss in my beauty queens, here we go. Cessna C190 Waco WMF5 Convair B-58 Hustler Thanks for looking!
  5. Though the pictures of Monday's eclipse that I've seen show what it looked like, the stunning brilliance of the absolute black of the moon's disc surrounded by the bright absolute white of the angle hair fine corona and the diamond rings' flash is something that a camera can't capture. If you've ever seen it you know what I'm talking about, for me it was so moving that I was laughing and crying at the same time. I watched it all unfold laying flat on my back.
  6. We drove over four hours from San Antonio to Cleburne TX to watch the eclipse. Our original plan was to be in Kerrville but the cloud cover forecast there was iffy at best. We experienced the totality in a patch of clear blue sky, along with a handful of fellow observers at a local park. It was one of the most beautiful sights I've ever beheald, seeing both diamond rings and the corona of the sun with a solar flare at 5:00, for a few precious minutes. Definitely well worth the effort, coming from SF Bay area of California. I easily recommend that if one has got a chance to see a full solar eclipse, definitely go for it.
  7. Excellent OP and observations! I concur that MSFS is absolutely jaw dropping visually (immersively so) considering too what it takes to run it acceptably well (note that acceptability is rightfully in the eyes of the beholder). Being a VR sim flyer, FG is not a concern (nor possible) but eye candy definitely and always has been. Note that VR HMDs automatically use reprojection, which effectively is FG done by the HMD software. A lot more can be said about this, but that's homework left for the reader.
  8. DX12 without FG: running an rtx 3080ti driving an HP Reverb G2 revised using DLSS Balanced. The dev who wrote the OpenXR toolkit attempted to get FG working in VR and discovered an insurmountable performance barrier when dealing resolutions greater than 4K. He reached out to nvidia about this and was essentially ignored. On the flip side of this, VR uses reprojection, of one sort or another, to create the frames it's missing from the gcard so the HMD can maintain its refresh rate using 'fresh' images.
  9. It's well overdue that I express my appreciation for such a fine tool that makes the MSFS 2020 experience so much more enjoyable: THANK YOU and a job well done. I don't know how many man-hours you've put into your fine tool, but it goes to show that it can be done thanks to you and of course all the others devs who paved the way. It's sad to think that such useful and needed functionality was overlooked by Asobo (heck, and I've wanted and dreamed of AutoFPS functionality for years now). BRAVO 🍻!!!
  10. For the OP, if you've been away from flight sim for 20 years, MSFS 2020 will be a mind blower, GET IT NOW! As mentioned, for a $1 you can get a two week trial subscription to MS Xbox GamePass and give a full version of MSFS 2020 a try for two weeks. That was my walk in and I never looked back, leaving behind my $$$ FSX instalI.
  11. Perhaps Sony is reacting to MS's decision to discontinue WMR. Why not, a 'replacement' HMD purchasing windfall is in the making there. Price-wise the Quest 3 and the PSVR2 go head-to-head. PSVR2 uses Fresnel lenses but has 2000×2040 per eye OLED displays, and is tethered by its USB cable. Quest 3 use pancake lenses, has 2,064 x 2,208 per eye LCD displays and can be optionally USB tethered. Neither have/use DisportPort for video input but instead use a video codec stream for the display input, e.g. a youtube video or what a Bluray disc contains. That last feature is most likely a deal breaker when I consider a future replacement for my Reverb G2 .
  12. I've never updated my Win10 sim computer to Win11. A few months ago I replaced my ancient laptop with a new Win11 one and it's got me thinking that it's time that my sim computer gets updated. Reading about how you can control when the feature updates are applied, and seeing/doing it myself for that laptop has given me a green light for my sim computer update. Even though the evil 24H2 Win11 WMR killer update is just around the corner, I feel that "I'm in control here" and that I can delay its application until the Nov. 2026 drop dead date announced by MS, thus giving my beloved G2 another year of service beyond Win 10 (if it'll stay working that long). The question is: Am I fooling myself here, as in to trust that MS won't do something sneaky? I remember the Win10 rollout; I had to kill boots more once that automatically were starting a Win10 install. Thoughts on this?
  13. Did you have to disconnect the G2's USB-C cable from your motherboard when you installed the 4080 Super? If so, did you reconnect it to the same USB-C port? Not all USB-C ports are driven the same. In any event, glad that 60 htz works for you. It literally made me sick when I've tried it with my G2.
  14. M. Bucchia speaks with absolute authority on this subject. MS has closed the door and we all need to get over it. Fortunately we got a year or so to do to so. A couple of friends of mine just got G2s only a few months ago, a huge bummer to say the least.
  15. This is going to happen this fall, as quoted from https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2024/02/08/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-26052-canary-and-dev-channels/ So fellow G2 users take heed. If you are a Win11 user MS will effectively nix G2 functionality with this build, which will be released this fall. Apparently one can delay this update, but diligence will be necessary to do so. Though I knew this was coming, my response to its swiftness is a bolded, all caps and large font F word followed by multiple exclamation points.
  16. Considering "golden age", MSFS undoubtedly and that's an understatement. Considering most happy/content, that was FSX. The fact that MSFS has yet to have a full featured save/load flight still ticks me off, and it was nearly a deal breaker when I first tried MSFS. I don't spend hours at a time sim flying, never have, but dang I do miss setting up a long GA flight with several waypoints and then being able to fly it out conveniently over multiple 1/2-1 hour sessions, thus my (somewhat) discontentment with MSFS. VR almost makes up for it. Though there is a VR mod for FSX, at that time the VR tech was rather dreadful.
  17. My friend uses DLSS Quality and the default resolution settings in the OpenXR tools (MS and OXRTK), along with generous mix of mostly Ultra settings. I use DLSS Balanced, occasionally Quality (if the weather permits), and about a 10/50/40 percent mix of Ultra/High/Medium setting with the same OpenXR environment. One other difference is that my G2 is about a year older than his (this is his second G2, first one malfunctioned). Both of us have older computers: 9900k and 10700k. With my G2 I find that the visual difference between DLSS Balanced and Quality is slight, and IMHO doesn't really explain why my G2 experience seems lacking clarity-wise in comparison. Perhaps it could be a burn-in type effect from over two years of use, but that is 100% guess (and maybe not worth mentioning). If anything I'm not wrapped up by this but it is nudging me towards an upgrade to a Bigscreen Beyond in a year or so, which I'm sure will overwhelm 3080 ti a lot more than it is now.
  18. A friend's G2 seems like a different kind of HMD compared to mine. Noticeably better contrast and clarity, though maybe his 4080 is the real difference. Don't we all. Every time I happen run in 2D I almost fall out of my chair, shocked (yet again) by the all clarity I'm missing everywhere. Dang VR can be soooo cruel.
  19. My thoughts on world scale is that it has nothing to do with world scale. It seems it's messing with your VR perspective such that "you" can be small like a 3 year old child or as big as a tall/huge professional athlete (or even bigger).
  20. If you want to breath DLSS Frame Generation like life into your 3090, this mod does it if you're comfortable with this sort of thing. There's a huge thread in the MSFS forums on using it. Ryan's reply is spot on. I'm also itching for a new build as well, but going to wait to see what MSFS 2024 is all about first. Probably go AMD, though haven't done so for well over 15 years (4200+ X2).
  21. My usual response to such questions: Is the pope Catholic? BTW, if you thought you could no longer sim fly without TIR you've seen nothin' yet!
  22. As a follow up to my recent topic on Reprojection Mode, I posted new questions on the Flight Simulator forum about the timing of the spatial reprojection behavior that mbucchia mentioned in his original response. My new post ended with a conclusion on how to reduce VR judder: use a fps limit to run consistently at your HMD's refresh rate or a whole fraction of it, e.g. for a G2 90 (dream on), 45 or 30 (15...don't bother). In mbucchia's response to my new questions, he agrees with my conclusion and provided a in-depth discussion about the tech on why it works that way. Again, much thanks to mbucchia! One nice side effect I have about using a 45 fps lock is it opened up a few FPS to give to either Ultra clouds or Quality DLSS...clouds won! I tried limiting at 30 fps which allowed me to run TAA with Render Scale 110. The effect was reminiscent of running 30 fps with Track IR and unfortunately at times was somewhat ugly. Note that I'm using Reprojection Mode too. Thanks for reading and that again you find this information useful.
  23. I see that you're using a Reverb G2, which is what I use. 2D panels still wobble a bit, but for me that's not an issue since I only use them for a momentary convenience. Also when I first 'drop in' to VR, it takes a second or so for the 3D image to settle. Once things are settled, a wobble occurs once in a while, usually on the periphery, but I'll take that over the judder that's mostly been smoothed out. Definitely it's not perfect. Perhaps Win11 is causing problems with this setting. I use Win10, DX12 beta, have HAGS disabled and my setting adjusted so I'm always getting 45-50 fps. BTW I can't say for certain that I'll be always be using Reprojection Mode, but at least it's now an option, at least for me.
  24. Sorry about my loose "sim" reference. MSFS is wonderful/excellent/etc., the sim SF-260 experience can't be described using polite language. Yeah, should've know better. But dang, it's VC rocks in VR (and the AC literally does too when in flight).
