5090 Black screen on boot nightmare

Yep, I can also put it to sleep and it wakes up no problem but when I restarted my keyboard went dead again during the process and i couldn't select my secondary OS so something is definitely off with fastboot in addition to everything else.  For right now I put it to sleep and will see if I can wake it up tomorrow morning LOL.

Ah ok.  My understanding was the issue of the bad microcode was actually going back to 12th or even maybe 11th gen (12th for sure), however supposedly the degredation issue was only affecting 13/14.  It could just be random aging/etc of components introducing an issue though.  I doubt it's the 5090 just because it's not really pulling power any more than a 4090 until you're in a game.  I think I'd check for what error LED is lighting first and go from there next time it happens.

Appreciate all the input and suggestions!  When I restart it cycles through all the LED's and they go out once it boots so will be really interesting to see which one goes red when I try a power down/power on.

Red light on boot is DRAM....  Tried reseating, Manually setting XMP settings, 32GB vs 64GB and it still fails "until" it starts so it "may" just be a coincidence that the memory controller on the MB seems to be taking a hit right as I installed the 5090.

Probably a sign to pull the trigger on the new system 🙂

So I ordered another 64GB just to test but the USB issues remain which lead me to believe that something is going a bit wonky with this system.  I got a good number of years out of it so can't complain but looks like I am moving back to AMD...

9800X3D

Asus TUF Gaming  870-Plus

Corsair Vengeance DDR5 6000 CL30

BeQuiet 1200W PSU

Then I will transfer:

Zotac 5090

4xM.2 drives +1 SATA

Corsair 360MM ICue Cooling with 3 fan radiator (ordered the 4/5 adapter as well)

6 Addt'l system fans  3 front, 2 bottom, 1 rear

The biggest issue I foresee is moving all of my HW over, saving my SPAD profiles, SIOC Profiles etc...   All of those little configuration things we forget about after a while LOL.

The "vast" majority of the rest should be could delivered just a question of reinstalling everything.  ChasePlane should handle my camera views, just a question of properly backing everything up and then reinstalling everything 😞

I know it will sound like heresy but you could try just putting your drives in the new system and letting Windows update itself a few times on boot and deal with re-activating Windows (much easier if you are logging in with a MS account and the key is tied to your account).  I've always re-installed until I did an upgrade a couple months ago.  I had seen a video from a tech channel I trust on YouTube about how to do it and that windows supposedly works quite well now at handling something like this.  They mention doing it frequently for system testing for hardware reviews etc.

Obviously if you suspect windows corruption in the first place though you might not want to try it.  Otherwise remove any motherboard utilities like Asus Amoury Crate for example that might not be useful on the new motherboard.  I know your new board IS an Asus but don't remember if the old one was.  If it was something else like Gigabyte for instance you'd remove Gigabyte's utility instead so you could actually install Armoury Crate on the new board.  Also I'd remove drivers for things like network cards and built in soundcards etc that won't be present on the system just before you shut down.  You would also want to remove the Intel Management Engine and any other chipset type drivers.

Once you boot the new system for the first time Windows will probably have to reboot a couple times while it installs new basic drivers for the new hardware, then you just install stuff like AMD's chipset drivers etc and you're on your way. You'll also have to re-activate Windows and just step through its wizard and tell it you made a hardware change.  If you're using an MS account to log in and have let it tie the key and hardware to your account you then just choose what PC name it is from a list of devices it finds on your account and you're set.  Worst case you may have to call a number and I can link the video I'm referencing which could step you through that part.  He uses workarounds to not need an MS account to log in, but if you use one it's easier to activate.  Word of warning it took me a couple tries though it kept saying activation servers weren't available but after about 15 minutes of being booted it worked.

The only other thing I had to deal with was resetting my activation on Fenix's website for their addons.  I also use GSX though and I pre-emptively did a step in their updater to de-register my system from the license so then I just had to re-activate it in the app after the upgrade.

Not heresy at all and I have indeed done a new build in just that manner!

Despite the DRAM light coming on it's not the actual memory or DIMMS  The new memory arrived, put it in, turned the settings down to match and exact same behavior.

All of the new components should be here tomorrow and I may very well jump right in.  It may actually be the memory controller on the CPU itself, who knows but too much head scratching so I'm now comfortable with the upgrade.  Also comfortable it's got nothing to do with the GPU.

Should be a fun few days...

Again, appreciate the advice, thank you!

Very well could be, that would explain the USB issues in addition to the Boot/Memory issues that I've confirmed aren't actually the memory...

Just waiting on a 5tb external drive and the parts for replacement build to arrive now.  i will back up the entire system to a removable HDD and then move things over and see if I can get away without having to reinstall everything.

Fingers crossed.

Happy to report that I am back up and running!

Not without some issues and scares along the way but I am up and running!!! Never even needed the backup external drive for anything.

AMD is running ~ 10 degrees cooler than my 12700K

Prior to anything I used EaseUS Partition Magic which is a phenomenal tool and migrated my OS/Boot drive from a 500Gb Gen 2 M.2 to a 2tb 9100 Pro PCIe Gen5 M.2 @14,700 /13400 Read Write Speeds...

I also consolidated my other 3 M.2's to a single 4TB Gen 5 M.2  I purchased a $20 M.2 to external USB drive reader so I can still pop in my old M.2's and use them as portable SDD's or copy anything over that I may have missed.

After all of that was done I took the two new M.2's (opposed to 4 from the old system) and followed @flyinion suggestion and just booted the new system with the data from the old machine... It took some Bios config but sure enough even with migrating drives I was able to boot to Windows!  I uninstalled all my old Intel/Z790 drivers and updated to all new AMD/ 870E drivers.   I thought at staying Gigabyte to Gigabyte with the motherboards couldn't hurt...

At first it seemed like the system wasn't posting.  I was terrified everything was for nothing but the new MB in addition to the 4 LED indicators on the MB has a very clear LED with the numerical code associated with the boot process.  I was able to see it was at 15 which was memory training.  The first few boots paused at the same step however subsequently all of my USB issues were resolved and all of my USB devices were available prior to Windows and the system seems to be booting fine.  Fingers crossed!!!

Unfortunately once I got into Windows I could not get MSFS to launch.  Tried all the usual steps of resetting XP Gaming services, logging out and back in, empty community folder etc etc but the only thing I could do was to verify the files in MS store which ultimately reinstalls everything.  Not a big deal and almost 200 Gb took less than 30 minutes.  Despite reinstalling everything MSFS STILL wouldn't launch.  I was about to just start from scratch when I remembered issues with the Nvidia App and MSFS launching.  When I went to preview the game settings within the Nvidia app I was able to see that when MSFS re-installed itself it also defaulted BACK to DX11!!!  Sure enough I knew there were issues with DX11 and the Nvidia app so uninstalled the app and bingo, MSFS was up and running.  I then reset to DX12 and set all of my graphics settings although MSFS restored all my controller profiles automatically.

EVERYTHING moved over.  SPAD with all of my HW settings and profiles, OI4FS and all my OpenCockpit modules, ASFS, PMDG, GSX even though I had to re-activate) FS2Crew, FSHUD, Chaseplane although I did have to reset my key bindings however it DID save all of my camera settings and views.

The only thing I couldn't get to work again was AIG...  Running AI-Manager and everything seems to have reset and somehow I lost all of my AIG assets in the migration.  So I have been re-downloading EVERYTHING for the better part of 13 hours now.  I disabled manual downloads and let it run overnight now I am going through all the manual downloads and carefully backing everything up in case I need to install again!

I have to say, I am VERY close to moving to FSLTL for the sheer convenience.  As good as AIG is and I do still believe it's the best AI available the download/install process is very tedious and time consuming which given the fact the best resource is still free thanks to Kaiii and the team I am not complaining at all.  Still very grateful and appreciative of what we have!!!

After I get my AI configured I "should" be all set for a test flight and by that I mean a short transatlantice hop in the 777...

So that's it.  Full system swap including moving from Intel to AMD and kept almost ALL of my data and settings without even re-installing windows.  Incredible.  Thank you @flyinion

Cheers,

Thank you to everyone who posted to help it was all greatly appreciated!

New system seems like a very solid build indeed, no regrets at all with the upgrade.

On the old system once MSFS was loaded and I was in the aircraft the difference between having Lossless Scaling off vs once you enabled the scaling was literally night and day.  I would dare say Lossless scaling completely changed the sim experience for me, it was a game changer.

When I was testing the new system last night after getting it up and running I initially forgot to even launch Lossless...  It was VERY good even without it however even with this system it's still absolutely better performance with Lossless Scaling.  I will continue to run it even on the new system.

I also mentioned it earlier but anyone using FSLTL or FSTraffic want to weigh in with their thoughts?  AIG has just become too heavy of a lift.  I am a solid 14 hours into installing flightplans, fixing missing repaints and manually downloading what seems to be each individual file...  Sure, you can disable the manual downloads but you miss out on hundreds of airlines.  At some point giving up a full day to install something makes it no longer free when you factor in the time spent.  Heck, even $100 would be worth it for a 1 minute vs 1 day install.

So who is using FSLTL or FSTraffic, anyone migrate from AIG?  Interested in feedback.

FS Traffic with $30 and a single click install sounds might appealing right now

Finally done with my AIG downloads!!!

To be fair I think my AIG issue was probably self induced as I ended up launching my old M.2 as an external drive and noticed on the old system I had a different AIG file structure.

Copied everything over from the old M.2 and got an error from AIG to delete my "beta" directory and modify my .json which I did.  After that I got the normal simobjects update and flight plans update.  Ran that for a few hours and I am back up and running with AIG.

I'm not sitting at the gate at LHBP preparing for a 9 hour hop to KEWR in MSFS.

I've got MSFS running with ASFS, FSUIPC with WideClient, SPAD, OI4FS, FSHUD, PAC-X, FS2Crew, ChasePlane, GSX, PMDG 777, sky4sim EFB, AviaServer, Dual Winwing CDU's, OpenCockpits HW including Dual EFIS, MCP, NAV, COM and Transponder and I didn't have to reinstall anything other than MSFS and then everything else just picked right up where it left off in the old system.  This is hands down the most seamless hardware upgrade I have ever done...

Performance is incredible.

Fingers crossed I report back in about 9.5 hours that I am at the gate in KEWR.

Thanks again everyone!

BTW, Did I mention I did all of this with a literal broken back...  Not like a figurative broken back but a literally fractured spine at T11 and T12...  Not ideal timing LOL

Glad to hear everything is working!  LOL on the memory training, yeah apparently AM5/DDR5 takes a LOT longer than the older AM4 platforms which apparently already were quite a bit longer than Intel systems.  Guess I should have warned about that but I kinda forgot because you only have to deal with it once and then maybe only in the future if you do a BIOS update and have to re-enter settings or of course if overclocking.

edit:  Just to make sure you went with a 9800X3D right?  If you did a 9950X3D there's a couple other settings you'll want to check in Windows to make sure you're getting the correct performance.

Appreciate it!  Yes, 9800X3D...

For now I have ProcessLasso disabled but may play around just to isolate my ancillary applications to a different core than MSFS.   Just focused on getting everything running well first.  Need to see how the landing at KEWR with full AI goes today.  First flight went a bit wonky on landing, performance became absolutely abysmal but I had been playing with graphics settings mid flight and also I realized I still had process lasso running with the old systems settings so I've disabled that now and trying the same flight.

The flight was great until landing but I disabled PL and respawned at KEWR and all was fine so today is the first true test...  Doing LHBP-KEWR now

Thanks for the update.  My 12700k seems to do well with photoshop batch files and substance painter but I admit those x3D's look mighty tempting for flightsim lol.

Maybe in a few years.  I need to get more out of my RTX 4080 and hoping Asobo optimizes 2024 further in SU4 as they planned.
