Question about Nvidia Control Panel DSR Settings

I have seen some articles about using DSR from the Nvidia Control Panel. I would like to know more about it:

1) Anyone using it?

2) Does it work in VR

3) Is it even worth playing around with?

I used it a while ago then began using MSFS' Render Scaling which is very similar I believe so left DSR factors.  I should retry it to see if it's more efficient.  As I'm using NV DLSS Frame Generation, so a lowly native rate of 30FPS-native x 2 = 60FPS-fg, much more often now I am able to set Render Scale to 140 and that is just razor sharp.  Here's an overview of DSR from the Oracle:

Here’s how to use it step-by-step with MSFS:


1. Enable DSR in the Nvidia Control Panel

  1. Right-click your desktop → Nvidia Control Panel.

  2. Under Manage 3D settings → Global Settings (or Program Settings for MSFS.exe).

  3. Find DSR – Factors.

    • You’ll see multipliers like 1.20x, 1.50x, 2.00x, 4.00x, depending on your GPU.

    • Each factor is a scale of your monitor’s native resolution. For example, on a 2560×1440 monitor:

      • 2.00x ≈ 3620×2036

      • 4.00x = 5120×2880 (basically 5K).

  4. Tick the factors you want available.

  5. Optionally adjust DSR – Smoothness (10–20% is typical; higher softens the image, lower keeps it sharper).


2. Select the DSR Resolution in Windows

After enabling, those higher “virtual” resolutions appear in Windows:

  • Right-click desktop → Display settings  Display resolution.

  • Select a DSR resolution (e.g., 5120×2880 if you chose 4×).

  • Windows now believes your monitor supports that resolution.


3. Configure MSFS Graphics Settings

You don’t need to change Windows resolution if you don’t want to — you can select the DSR resolution directly inside MSFS:

  1. Launch MSFS.

  2. Go to Options → General → Graphics.

  3. Under Display Mode and Resolution, you’ll now see the new DSR resolutions.

    • Pick one above your native resolution.

    • Example: on a 1440p monitor, try 4K (3840×2160) or higher if enabled.


4. Balancing with Render Scaling

  • MSFS also has its own Render Scaling slider.

    • 100% = native resolution.

    • 100% = supersampling (similar to DSR).

    • <100% = performance gain, less clarity.

  • If you use DSR, leave render scaling at 100% to avoid double-scaling.

  • If you want fine control, you can combine: e.g., DSR 4K + render scale 80% = better balance.


5. Performance Considerations

  • DSR increases GPU workload roughly in proportion to the pixel count.

  • Example: 1080p → 4K DSR = ~4× the pixels.

  • Your RTX 4090 can handle higher DSR factors much better than mid-range cards, but it can still bottleneck in heavy scenarios like photogrammetry cities, glass cockpit aircraft, or VRAM-heavy add-ons.

  • Test with Frame Generation, DLSS, or TAA depending on your preference.


 Typical good combo for clarity:

  • 1440p monitor → DSR at 4K (3840×2160) → Render Scale 100% → TAA.

  • Gives very crisp gauges and reduced shimmering.

No, Nvidia’s DSR factors don’t apply in VR.

Here’s why:

  • DSR is a desktop / monitor scaling feature.
    It works by making Windows and the sim think your monitor supports higher resolutions, then downsampling. In VR, the rendered image goes directly to the headset’s compositor (Oculus, SteamVR, WMR, OpenXR, etc.), which manages resolution independently.

  • VR headsets already have fixed native panel resolutions.
    Example: a Reverb G2 is ~2160×2160 per eye. The sim (via OpenXR or SteamVR) supersamples that resolution internally, but DSR never enters the pipeline — the VR compositor decides the render resolution.

  • Equivalent in VR:
    Instead of DSR, you control supersampling with:

    • OpenXR Toolkit (custom render scale, foveated rendering, etc.)

    • MSFS VR Render Scale (in graphics settings → VR tab)

    • SteamVR or Oculus software supersampling sliders

These give the same effect as DSR (higher internal render res, then downsampled to headset res), but through the VR runtime, not Nvidia’s driver.
