Missing Apron Lights - KSAN

Featured Replies

Hi,

Anyone else running the latest beta from L/R and experiencing missing apron lights at San Diego (KSAN)?

As one of hundreds of "artists" (as LR calls us) who work trying to keep the airports up to date, I can tell you that it takes hours if not days or months to update a single large airport like KSAN.  It's not a simple matter of just adding missing apron lights, it involves updating every taxiway, building, jetway, landscape and any other items that might be incorrectly displayed or altered since the last work done on it.  In addition, Jeppesen charts and FAA charts do not show all the non-runway lighting details, and the ESRI and Google earth images often aren't sharp enough to show tiny lights.

The last work on KSAN was done in July 2022 by a highly skilled artist, Julian Lockwood.  But the library assets have changed since then, and it is doubtful that any of us have actual photographic (other than satellite) images of airport details that would include apron lights.  Easy to overlook such a small detail in such a complex airport.

Months yes always months, and I will add, some go over board on ramp lighting and taxi way edge lights.

If the airport is in otherwise good shape, adding apron lights takes maybe 20 minutes. I will take a look at it.

To note: The airport has been in this state for 4 years, so it is nothing new to 12.4

The last step Julian performed (among some other things) is to "remove all objects set to SET MSL", a technique that is not allowed anymore, but was used profusely by authors to "make objects smaller by sinking them into the ground", often used on the too tall apron lights. He may have missed that he removed the apron lights in the process.

Dont go down that road you know where it will end...

The airport was made by SStoeckle, originally, he is very good and I doubt that I will have to redo it completely 😉

Added apron lights back - I would post the fixed airport here (and a screenshot, no I am not going through that insert image url BS), but unlike the main X-Plane community forum, avsim still does not allow posting short files or screenshots in posts. A policy that is so 1990s and that I urge the avsim owners to review.

If you're posting a large gallery of hi res screenshots then the policy is fine. But for quick fixes and how to do it tips it's a real barrier. I put all my images on IMGUR then some law /policy change means I can't even access them in the UK anymore (or anyone else).

So I signed up for FLICKR and spent 30 mins trying to find a link to a actual image to share here. I failed. A shortcut with no preview was the best I could manage and who wants to click on a link like that these days?

I get hosting costs and bandwidth concerns though.

Yes, mine is 109924 - just remember to delete the downloaded package when it becomes part of an official update, otherwise you will miss out on all further updates to this airport.
