Bufferpools

Featured Replies

Could anyone tell me what I should set my bufferpools to for a Nvidia GTX960 with 1GB VRAM? My GTX980 bit the dust and had to go back to the 960. The 980 was working fine with bufferpools set at 0, but now with the 960, it still runs without too much stuttering, but I keep getting anoying screen flashes, probably because I dropped from 4GB VRAM to 1GB VRAM, I am waiting to find another 980 at a decent price to replace the one that crapped, for now I have to use the 960 but these screen flashes are distracting. I've been playing around with the bufferpools but I either get serious stutters or I get really bad screen flashes. What would be a good "sweet-spot" setting for my bufferpools with only 1GB VRAM?

Not an expert but I can post what information I have.

============

[BUFFERPOOLS]
//UsePools=0
UsePools=1

Poolsize=8388608  //1000, 4000, 8388608 (NickN), 15000000, 100000000, 200000000, 850000000

RejectThreshold=126976,   // 512K=524288,   256K=262144,   124K=126976 (NickN), 96K=98304

//UsePools 0 should make FSX work better if the graphics card is higher end

//If the CPU is stronger than the GPU, such as a 4.5-gig CPU feeding a 560TI with only a gig of video //ram - we will definitely need UsePools =1, but with a bigger RT, say 1MB (10485760).

//If you get constant white or blue 'box' visual glitches and you are sure //you have HIGHMEMFIX=1 in the config, then raise to:RejectThreshold=262144

I think all of these tweaks became unnecessary with the Steam Edition of FSX.

I have the older box version which needs the tweaks to run smoothly. I have never seen the RT tweak before, do I put it in the same place as the Bufferpools?

I will give those a try and see what happens. I don't get blue boxes flashing, I get black ones.

Well, I tried the poolsize you gave me and I got really severe jitters, especially when I turn. So I set Usepools to 0  and added the RT you gave me, and things seemed to improve another 10% bringing me to 90% over the stock settings. I still get a slight jitter during turns, depending on the scenery. I think 90% is about the best I am going to get from this old rig. 90% isn't all that bad, it's tollerable.

This is the first forum I was able to get a direct answer to a question. I've tried those design forums and all I get is answers with a bunch of links to previous inquiries from several years back. I don't have the time to sit here and read through years of threads just to find a simple answer to a question. Thank you so much for giving me exactly what i asked for. It did help. I think it was adding the RT tweak which I have never seen before, that actually helped. I don't think this GPU is going to be able to use the poolsize due to the low amount of GRAM it has. I am going to upgrade and perhaps that will let me use the poolsize to tweak things a little more, maybe get to that 95% that I am pushing for, not even going to try for 100, I doubt this thing would ever get there. 95 would be perfectly fine with me. Again thanks for the direct answer.

I'm not an expert, it's all trial and error I've used over the years past.  I'm playing FSX/A on Windows 11 64 bit, and I'm using the big box FSX/A Gold edition.  People can argue about tweaks all they want, means nothing to me.  The goal is to make whichever owned game to work without too much issue.

I sure do not miss all those tweaks that became necessary with the disc versions of FSX.

You're right, it's mostly trial and error, but it helps to have some sort of starting point. I'll take a look at my settings and see how close they are to what you have. I pretty much have my sliders set where I am comfortable and don't cause too many issues. My main issue was the screen flashes and the severe stutters and jerky motions during turns. A lot of that went away with the last tweak I added which was the RT. I still get an occassional flash here and there, but nothing I can't deal with. I would like to eliminate those annoying stutters though. Maybe when I can upgrade my GPU most of those will go away as well. This 1GB VRAM just don't get it.

- Higher weather settings like cloud coverage and cloud distance used to cause me issues.

- Certain water settings was a big issue for me with flashing.  I would experiment with different settings.

- Orbx HR buildings cause turn stutters for me during turns, but as a rule Orbx scenery works perfectly for me.

- High traffic settings around big airports might do that as well.

It might be fun to set the simulator to the lowest possible settings and notch up 1 setting per session to find the sweet spot (using the same location and the same airplane).  I did that once as a test to simulate FS-9 settings.
