I got a free trial of Game Pass so thought I would give 2024 another try (got it on day one and refunded… it was such a mess.) Got everything setup and getting great performance in 2D and VR. However, EVERY TIME I use VR the program crashes to desktop when I hit CTRL-TAB to exit VR. Without fail. It’s like I hit ALT-F4.

Google shows me this was a well-know issue a few months back but I can’t find anyone with a resolution. Is this still happening for everyone or was there a fix? Some said it only happened in Full Screen but it happens for me in Windowed as well, no difference. Very frustrating, as I am ready to upgrade but not at the expense of being able to pop in and out of VR on long flights.

Using an HP Reverb G2 with WMR. CPU is Ryzen 7800X3D, GPU is Radeon RX 6800 XT, RAM is 32G

Thanks!

It happens to me as well. I found a solution for this on the net. First quit to Main Menu in VR, then make CTRL+TAB. This prevented the CTD for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately no joy, program closes out no matter what when I exit VR. It’s the only thing keeping me from moving over. Occasionally I’ll get a sticky cursor in VR at the end of a flight. In 2020 I can pop out of VR and back in to fix it. Maybe SU5 will fix it but not optimistic as it’s been reported for months now. It really seems MS still doesn’t see VR as important

I had the same, and I now usually end the game while still in VR, don't want to loose my entry into the logbook.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

no more crashes for me switching back and forth between 3D to 2D since the latest beta 5 update: 1.7.22.0, perhaps because of:

  • "Improved the way the game switches in virtual reality to avoid excessive memory usage."

That’s encouraging. I am really enjoying 2024 and would love to make the migration while it’s on sale. But it’s maddening not being able to bounce in and out of VR during a flight. Fingers crossed for SU5 and that it comes soon! Thanks for the update!

with totally smooth over 70 fps in VR (roughly 5760 × 2880 total rendered pixels, about 17 million), I see no need for a RTX 5090.

73 fps screenshot taken in VR on Pimax Crystal Light:

What AMD adrenaline driver are you on? I have consistent problems with driver time out and crash of msfs2024 when switching between VR and 2d ON EVERY driver after 25.12.1. No problems with the 25.12.1  driver at all. I am on an AMD RX7900XTX. Haven't tried the latest drivers after the SU 5 update though.

Hey Doc,

I just updated to the latest. But it worked on the older driver. The change came when I went from XBOX Game Pass version to Steam. No crashes since.

I did delete Adrenaline and do a driver-only install as that “busy cursor” was driving me nuts. Not sure if everyone experiences that but it was unbearable. I’ve had that issue on every version of Adrenaline since I got the card.

Never seen the "busy cursor" 😅.  Maybe that's worth a try, installing the latest drivers, but not adrenaline, to avoid driver time out when switching between VR and 2d. Fingers crossed.

Yeah I’ve had that issue since I went AMD. Something in Adrenaline stays busy and keeps the cursor (and sometimes the circle icon) flashing for hours. Must be isolated because not everyone has it but Reddit has a lot of posts about it. So I figured I don’t need all the Adrenaline tweaks, I just use the settings in MSFS so I just did a driver-only install. Worth a try.

Tested the latest drivers from AMD (released may 2026) and there where no problems with freezing, driver time outs or CTD when swapping between 2d and VR!🙂Difficult to say something about performance because the SU 5 has been a mixed bag for me and it took me a couple of days tweaking  the settings to get about the same results as before SU 5.
