Barometer tutorial?

Featured Replies

Flying the Vision Jet the other day, I wondered why I really could not get it up to speed. When I increased the Barometer setting, the jet seemed to kind of level off and the speed increased (on Auto Throttle). I did hit the B key to supposedly set the barometer correctly over 18,000 feet, but that really had no effect.

Question: Sorry for this obviously basic question for you serious pilots, but I really don't know how to set a barometer correctly in MSFS 2024. Is there a basic tutorial on this or can you explain simply what I have to do to learn how to employ this important function the correct way?

Thanks.

In MSFS 2020, the keybind for Barometer set is B. In MSFS 2024 the keybind is the comma key ,

Is it done yet? When will it be released? Will it be freeware or payware? How much will it cost? Any updates on the progress? Will it work for Xbox? Can I be a beta tester? How's the performance in VR?

Yes. I did use the comma key to adjust correct altitude. I try that for barometer.

Here's an article with background information on altimeters:

How Does An Altimeter Work?

How much do you know about the altimeter in your airplane?

Quick version:

Below transition altitude (18,000 ft in the US), set your altimeter to the altimeter setting reported by an airport in the vicinity

Above transition altitude, set the standard altimeter setting (29.92 inHg or 1013 hPa)

That said, your altimeter setting won't affect performance, so if you're not able to achieve your expected cruise speed, something else is wrong. What speed do you expect to achieve? What speed are you actually achieving? Can you share a screenshot?

I have a hunch that maybe you're referring to a cruise performance table that lists true airspeed (TAS) and comparing this to the airspeed indicator, which reads indicated airspeed (IAS)? Are you familiar with the difference between these? At altitude, IAS is quite a bit lower than TAS.

And, in general, it should be said that the Vision Jet is just not particularly fast - not really any faster than a fast single-engine turboprop (e.g. a TBM). But, of course, you do get to tell your friends that you fly a jet... 😉

Thanks. Yes. Love my personal "jet"!

I've also experienced this; I do not use the this trick as a consequence, I just manually adjust when ATC calls out a new QNH.

One thing I've noticed in the Vision Jet; In Europe, Standard Baro is above 5000, and that might be why you see your Baro flashing blue - the Vision Jet is trying to tell you to switch to standard. It does seem like the Vision Jet is aware of the difference between Europe and USA but only if you have the setting in the PFD configured to the right units. If you are doing missions in career mode, you will not get any penalties for setting baro wrong. It's only ever an issue if your destination is at a significant elevation difference than your departure.

Transition Altitudes vary across Europe. Schiphol is 3,000ft. Most UK airports are 6,000ft. Madrid is 9,000ft I think. No commonality unlike the US.

Just a small note: This isn't true everywhere in Europe. The transition altitude differs by country in Europe and, I believe, in some cases even between different airports in the same country.

Edit: Only noticed after posting that Ray had already noted this above.

Thats interesting! I'm mostly flying the vision jet around France/England/Germany. I had read 5000 on another post and assumed that to be the case for all the non-FAA regulated spaces.

Where do you typically find the regional standard baro listed? Its not in the ATIS.

I assume the regional differences are why you don't get dinged for not setting it correctly in career missions (they will ding you for overspeed below 10,000ft however)

Please understand I don’t use MSFS but with 20 years experience using Radar Contact for FSX and P3D I’ve plenty of experience with a very good ATC program.

If you mean the Transition Altitude that should be displayed on Navigraph charts for the departure and arrival airports. Radar Contact ATIS reads out the QNH which you should use to adjust your altimeter at the gate.
