Free land (almost)

Featured Replies

This YT presenter channel is by a male professor at some sort of girls college I think. And so he explains things with female figure images. This one is federal land. In America about 30% of the land is owned by the Federal Government. And the people have free access to the largest 2 of the 5 kinds of public land. So anybody has acess and for instance in the Forest Service lands, roads are everywhere. (Steep rocky requiring 4WD mostly). In area, it's like the huge front garden on Downton Abbey, except way larger. And more rugged, undeveloped, and not cared for. But it is yours if you live near these areas and have a 4WD vehicle.

Brerue of Land Management, Forrest Service, National Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Department of Defense. The first 2 are the largest, by far. 65% of Nevada. 15% of California. For instance.

But camping, hunting, target shooting, fishing, hiking, isn't liked by everyone is some families:

This woman is a veritable Christopher Columbus/Marco Polo/Ferdinand Magellan compared to my wife. Around 15-20 years ago we were walking near the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. We were walking on an asphalt path that eventually transitioned into a dirt path among some trees. At that point she stopped and said “I don’t want to go in the wilderness”. I was dumbfounded. JFK Drive, a major thoroughfare for car traffic at the time, was about 150 feet to our right. We actually had to turn around and go back. 😱

Before my wife and I got married I told her I go camping, back packing and fishing. You can come with me or stay home, but I'm going.

She came with me and became an accomplished camper, back packer and fisherwoman. We made our last hike in the wilderness when I was 83. We had been married for 60 years when she died. I dearly loved that woman!

Me and my wife like hiking and 4WD in the national forest land. But we've never done anything serious. In fact we chickened out in Death Valley because the dryness and temps are just evil and there aren't rivers and tree lines to orient yourself. It looks the same in all directions. In the mountains you can follow streams if you're really lost. They go downhill which would be Westerly.

Fielder, there are hiking trails in Death Valley. They go up the canyons. Betty and I hiked several of them. Just be sure to take lots of water.

Start your hike just after breakfast and be back by noon and spend the afternoon in the swimming pool. We usually stayed about three days at Stovepipe Wells.

Being thrifty, we just slept in our RV bed while parked on public land. Living fairly close to Yosemite, we are used to well marked trails. Throwing a pine cone to chase a black bear away. Other hikers never far away. Not too adventuresome. No real danger.
