A few observations regarding recent behavior

Featured Replies

First of all, I would like to thank Kiek for all the work that goes into PSXT. I have been using the software for a long time and I truly appreciate the effort behind this project. The following comments are meant purely as constructive feedback. If any of these observations can help improve the system, I will be more than happy to contribute.

Over the past couple of months, despite the various updates that have been released, I have noticed a few changes that, at least in my experience, have made the simulation less immersive than it used to be. I know every update is a compromise and may solve one issue while introducing another, but I thought it would be useful to summarize what I am currently observing.

I should also mention that these observations may not necessarily be caused by PSXT itself. As far as I remember, my settings have remained essentially unchanged, but it is always possible that I have missed something or that some settings now need to be adjusted differently.

1. Aircraft overlapping at parking stands

This is something that I had never noticed before. Recently, however, it has happened several times to find parked aircraft occupying the same stand, or even an aircraft parked directly on top of the user aircraft. It is not a frequent occurrence, but it is certainly quite immersion-breaking when it happens.

2. Live aircraft visibility at medium distance

This is probably the most noticeable change.

My usual test environment is Heathrow Terminal 5. While taxiing towards runway 27R, I used to see arriving traffic on 27L well before touchdown, especially at night thanks to the landing lights. Likewise, aircraft holding short of the runway or taxiing in the distance were already visible.

Now, live aircraft often remain invisible until they are much closer to my position. As a result, the airport does not feel empty, but it does feel almost empty of live traffic beyond the immediate surroundings. Aircraft that should already be visible simply do not appear until the last moment, when several of them suddenly pop into view at once. Even aircraft only a few hundred metres away are often not displayed.

I understand this may have been introduced to improve performance, but from an immersion point of view it feels like a noticeable step backwards.

3. Aircraft disappearing while taxiing near the runway

Another behaviour I have noticed is that aircraft taxiing close to the active runway sometimes disappear completely while I am on final approach. My impression is that they may be filtered out because they are considered too close to the user aircraft, but of course I don't know if that is actually the reason.

Whatever the cause, it reduces immersion because holding aircraft or traffic taxiing alongside the runway suddenly vanishes from the scene.

4. Stuck aircraft remain visible indefinitely

Previously, if an aircraft became stuck on the runway because of inconsistent traffic data, it would usually disappear automatically once another aircraft reached it. This was a good workaround because the situation corrected itself after a short time.

Now, the stuck aircraft often remains there while subsequent traffic simply passes through it, making the problem much more noticeable.

Overall, my impression is that there has been a small regression in immersion compared with a few months ago. I fully understand that development is an ongoing process and that every update involves compromises. These observations are simply intended as constructive feedback, in the hope that they may help make an already excellent project even better.

Thank you again for all your hard work.

Hi,

Thank you for your constructive comments, much appreciated.

Here are my first thoughts on items 1 to 3. I just got back from a weekend trip, so I will look into these a bit more later, but just to be sure:

@1. Make sure that you have completely switched off parked aircraft in MSFS. In my experience, these settings are sometimes reset, so you may have to switch them off again. Also make sure that your add-on airport does not include parked static aircraft.

@2. Nothing has changed, except that aircraft newly spawned below 1,000 ft are no longer spawned in the air, but only after they have landed. However, this behaviour only applies when you have just started your sim at that airport.

Of course, you need to set the radius high enough, but if you do, you should often see four aircraft in line for landing. See the attached picture. Whether you can actually see the aircraft in your sim is a different matter, as that depends on settings such as LOD. The best thing you can do is check this in Little Navmap, if you see them there it is not a PSXT issue..

@3. Switch off user aircraft collision avoidance to see whether that makes a difference. EDIT I meant user air

Thanks, Kiek, I really appreciate your suggestions.

While you check these points on your side, I'll also go through the items you mentioned and see if I can improve my setup

Thanks again!

I found a bug that prevented aircraft "stuck" at the runway during takeoff or landing to be "overridden / disappearing".
Fixed in 15.6.6

Unfortunately, that is not really fixed in 15.7.5. I recently observed stuck aircraft at EGLL RWY 09R and EBBR RWY 07R.

The prior method, removing stale aircraft when another aircraft taxis through them, was fine for me as well.

But first, enjoy your holiday.

The method is still the same, but instead of once in 3 seconds, PSXT checks 10 times per second if there is another live aircraft close to the "stuck" one. So more chanse of detecting the collision....

EDIT could it be that the aircraft you mention were not stuck but still alive?

The Air Canada and the two BAW Airbus in front were stuck there for minutes while other planes were departing and clipping through them. That was about 1200z on July 14th at EGLL.

I have observed this same behaviour at some other airports in the UK.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D | GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super | MoBo:  ASUS Prime X670-P WIFI | OS: Windows 11 Home 64bit| RAM: 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | HD: 2TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 PCIe SSD, 1TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 PCIe SSD | MSFS 2024

Definitely fixed in 15.8.0
