OpenStreetMap Blocks Map with 403

Featured Replies

The OpenStreetMap block was resolved after a friendly discussion on Github.

You might want remove the map image tiles containing the error message from the cache since these remain two weeks on disk. Do this only if you see the error messages in the map and if you use the OpenStreetMap.

Go to LNM menu "Tools" -> "Files and Directories" and select "Show Map Cache". This opens the cache folder in you file manager like Windows Explorer or Apple Finder. Select the folder "openstreetmap" and delete it. Restart LNM and the error messages should be gone.

I created a FAQ topic Frequently asked Questions - OpenStreetMap map blocked with error 403 about this. Below is a copy of this topic.

You see images containing an error message instead of map tiles. This is not a user or installation problem.

OpenStreetMap administrators blocked access for Little Navmap for no apparent reason based on the user agent. This was done intentionally without contacting me before. Little Navmap does not violate their policies.

The best solution is to use another map like the OpenTopoMap or one of the other maps which require an account but are still free. You can select a map theme from the Little Navmap menu View -> Theme. Note that themes suffixed with a * require a user account.

I recommend to register at Thunderforest or Maptiler and add the key in Little Navmap since they have quite good maps including hill-shading. See Little Navmap User Manual - Map Web Service Configuration for information about installation.

Another option is to install the OpenStreetMap German.zip or OpenStreetMap French.zip. The big plus over the plain OpenStreetMap is that you can see readable names in Asia, for example. More map themes can be found a Little Navmap Downloads - Map Themes.

The installation instructions are here: Little Navmap - Map Themes

The next version of Little Navmap will fix this.

The image below shows the map theme selection toolbar button:

Same issue here. I have already tried rebooting to get a new IP (my IP is not static) and deleting the cache (in .marble), to no avail.

Let's hope that it is a temporary issue with the servers or that the develper fixes it depending on the root cause, because I had to change to OpenTropoMap but I definitely prefer OpenStreetMaps.

what do you recommend, opentoromap, thunderforest, or maptiler?

hi, ive registered into thunderforest and got the API key, when put into the little navmap map key and applied, does nothing. i restarted the app and it still shows the usual access blocked filled map

Did you select Thunderforest from the LNM menu "View" -> "Theme"?

Covers the whole world. You might see some German names like "München" instead of Munich.

There is also a French OSM variant https://www.littlenavmap.org/downloads/Map%20Themes/OpenStreetMap%20French.zip in the downloads for LNM map themes (https://www.littlenavmap.org/downloads/Map%20Themes/).

So I came to the forum and read this thread.

I’ve just installed "OpenStreetMap French" locally, as recommended above. Great!!! 😃

Many thanks. 🤩

Well this worked out nice anyway.

Had previously tried 1 and 2 connections.

Must be something on their end it's summertime.
