Opinions about a GPU upgrade

Featured Replies

XP12 puts greater demands on my present system. I installed 32 g ram, up from 16.

But my 1660ti just doesn’t cut it. FPS is fine, but with XME and sim- heaven blurries are a Problem.

I am considering this card realizing it will still involve some setting compromises

: RTX5060|OC|8GB

If you have any thoughts about this card from PNY please share them thanks

I think the 8 GB of VRAM on the RTX 5060 could become a limitation in X-Plane 12, particularly if you’re running high-resolution textures, scenery, or XME. The FPS itself may be fine, but once VRAM becomes saturated, you can start seeing texture blurries and other compromises.

I’d take a look at Micro Center and compare the price of the 5060 with cards offering more VRAM. If the price difference isn’t too large, I’d lean toward the card with more memory for X-Plane 12.

That said, the 5060 is certainly capable of running XP12 well. I’ve seen reports of 30–40 FPS with reasonably smooth performance, but you’ll probably need to make some sensible adjustments to the graphics settings. For XP12, I’d prioritize VRAM capacity and texture quality over simply chasing the highest FPS.

Freshly retired after 41 unforgettable years on the Boeing 747. The flying days may be behind me, but the memories never will be. Now I have the privilege of sharing those experiences—and continuing to learn alongside the next generation of pilots—in the Level D simulator. Aviation has a way of keeping us all pilots, no matter how many hours we've logged.

Thanks, LR,

Thanks LR,

I am aware of those considerations and I realize there may be compromises, but I am limited by budget. Among things I could do is stop using XPME although I really like what it does. anyway I’m still on the edge about this and again thanks for your consultation. Good advice.

I don't think +2gb is going to magically make the blurries go away with those addons in use. Lots of folks complain about seeing it even with 8gb. If you aren't cpu limited, you'd certainly see a FPS increase though.

A while back they posted a roadmap of tech that would be going into the gfx engine. There was mention of stuff that would definitely help VRAM budgeting and usage. Probably linked to the next-gen scenery engine. Maybe wait till you see that stuff go into the sim? Who knows how long that will take though. They did say that initial next-gen stuff would start arriving this year.

Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...

Good move! In the mean time keep saving additional coin for a better board once the next gen stuff drops.
