The next sim

Recommended Posts

Of course you are all correct that the time is past for FU3, although I will certainly keep it for my private use over the next few years at least. I won't be moving onto any other sims for a while - life is busy enough, and a quick fly through the familiar landscapes is all I want for relaxation. I have enjoyed making models for FU3 - both for the fun of making them and for enhancing the sim. With all this talk about the next sim, is there still interest in further development of Seattle, Switzerland, UK or SanFran regions? There must be some interest - there were 50 or so downloads for all the recent stuff.RobD.

"With all this talk about the next sim, is there still interest in further development of Seattle, Switzerland, UK or SanFran regions? FU3 should have disappeared many years ago but in my opinion we have still some way to go before it becomes obsolete. This is not to say that we should not look around at what else is going on and eventually particpate. However, as a humble VFR pilot nothing, at the moment beats FU3. My summer pilgrimage to the UK prepared and flown using UK south scenery before actually really taking off has convinced me even more. This is reinforced by the exceptionally high quality of the recent scenery and aircraft developments. By the way I thought I heard something about Denmark scenery or is this just a rumour ? Cheers,QvdG

Development for FU3 should absolutely continue--without a doubt. A replacement will not arrive overnight so there's no reason to stop making FU3 better and better.Peter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gifBFU Forums ModeratorRenegade/Seawolf Design Group (RSDG)

http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/logo75t.gifBush Flying Unlimited"At home in the wild"Looking for adventure? Well to be honest, there are now three things I love about FU3:1) the sim (what a surprise!)2) making things for the sim3) the community and friendship. And just possibly these are in reverse order! OK, I too would like to keep flying this vintage a bit longer!RobD

After having incooperated jonpoint's 'visibility improvement' there is no other flight-sim that comes even close to FU3's ground-textures. As I fly VFR Only, I will stick to FU3 as long as possible.I also own FS2004 and UK-VFR Photographic Scenery, but the display quality is far inferiour to FU3. Second, FU3 has a much more sensible way of loading ground-textures. FS9 deteiorates the groundtiles when You are just a few km's away chopping f.eks. a Motorway into pieces. Any airspeed exceeding 50 knots, and the FS-engine is not able to keep the groundtextures updated. If there is interest, I will post a screenshot to show what I mean.ChrisD

Chris,What does Jon's "visibility improvement" do to the ground textures ? Does it make them sharper at greater range ? If so, then that is something that I should be implementing :-)Chris Low.

ChrisLow asked:What does Jon's "visibility improvement" do to the ground textures ? Does it make them sharper at greater range ? If so, then that is something that I should be implementing :-)To me it seems that FU3 extends the range within which the best resolution GroundTiles is used. So for me the ground looks sharper further away than it used to.However, You may notice a drop in frame-rate, if You use a low end PC because the amount of data is much larger. If You have the power to spare, it is definately worth it :-)ChrisD

You let me worry about the framerate. If the textures are sharpened at distance, then I will definitely be using this technique :-)Chris Low.

"With all this talk about the next sim, is there still interest in further development of Seattle, Switzerland, UK or SanFran regions"I would really like to see more improvements, especially to the UK and Switzerland regions. I haven't looked at the Switzerland region for a while, but last time I did, the mipmaps were ugly and pixelated and there was no elevation data, everything was just flat. It's an interesting region with some beautiful scenery and some really nice (and sometimes challenging) airports. The UK region is already very big and the basic stuff is finished, so you can do some basic flying over it and land at several airports. I would really like to see better ATC/AI traffic and more airports for that region. Eventually, I would like to see some more coverage, with some highlands and mountains included. There isn't much I can do here. I did work a little with the soundfiles to try to cut'n paste existing sounds to create new airport names, but the result wasn't that good.I think the Sanfran and Seattle regions don't need any more work. We've been flying over them for 4 and 6 years, improving them all the time so there isn't much more that can be done. For me, it's not really talking about the "next" sim. I don't plan to throw FU3 away just because FS2004 or X-Plane 7. I did run FU3 AND FS2002 for the past two years, and I intend to run FU3 alongside X-Plane 7 and FS2004 (and possibly Flight Gear) as well. All the sims have their advantages and disadvantages.

My current plans:- make a taxi - nice to have something small and cute to work with for a change - I intend to make it in slightly less detail than Buckingham palace. You may say "why make a taxi when we already have a Mazda 323 in the library". And I have to point out that "sure, everyone would prefer to drive a Mazda 323, but not everyone is as fortunate as I", in an upper class English accent, and "roads full of Mazda 323's don't look realistic". Anyway, black taxis are as much icons as red buses for UK.- upgrade Gatwick. Supply train services, with the Luc/Glidernut improved non-rotating trains as standard. Gatwick needs upgrading as commercial flights in Dash 8's have stretched its resources to the limits. Do you want a few villages scattered around its surroundings as in Stansted? I'm not a Chris Low but I can sprinkle a few trees around. Do you want concrete aprons/taxiways or do you want framerate?- at last, creeping reluctantly onto the horizon, I see signs of Luton appearing through the mist. If no-one has staked their development sign on this plot, I would be ready to start on this in a few weeks. But being lazy, I would love to invite a co-developer to help me - you saw what a difference Hans Petter made to LCA.RobD.

Already been done Peter (hang on a minute, what's that? the dragon's not a bird? But if flies doesn't it? well ok). Ah, correction, great idea! Yes, we should have a few birds flying around - simple ones with chirping sounds for airport areas, a few flying geese maybe. Sounds great! You'll have to give me a clue on how to make birds out of cubes! Better, get Jon Point to make a few birds for us - he's brilliant at this sort of stuff. And he loves making living things - trees, moths, power towers - I'm sure he can make a sparrow or two. And he can probably make better WAV files for them than anyone outside the British museum. But let him finish his gliders and moths first, or glidernut will shoot me. Slowly.RobD.

>And he loves making living things - trees, moths, power towersLiving power towers? :-lolWell, for the SF scenery, sea gulls would be appropriate. We also have hawks, crows, pigeons, blue birds, black birds, and the occasional duck and Canadian Goose flocks. Canadian Geese would work nicely for both SF and Seatac regions. Is it possible to make a flock of geese as a single AI "aircraft"? Might be fun to follow them as they migrate:http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art10861.aspSome photos:http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art13649.aspPeter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gifBFU Forums ModeratorRenegade/Seawolf Design Group (RSDG)

Peter,You want my flock of geese (or is that a gaggle?). I have two! Actually, one is ducks (grey), the other pelicans (big, white). They are FLED model which can be used as moving models!I suppose I could extend the aviary to some Canadian Geese. In reality, these are sooooo simple - one double-sided polygon (pointy bit at the front) and one mipfile. Now, this has got to be a good 'starter' project? What? I've already done it? Well, yeah, but what about some others get... what? Seagulls? And pidgeons for around Buck Palace? They don't fly in triangular-shaped flocks ;)Before you ask, I have tried modelling them separately but you cannot see them! What I find more interesting is that you were browsing "The Voice of Women" website :-lol:-waveJon Point*************************(effyouthree@hotmail.com)*************************

There you go - Jon's way ahead already.RobD.Aren't power lines live? "Don't touch that, its live". Well, I thought the towers would be too.Ouch!

Hi Rob, Taxi sounds like a great idea. Any chances of a nice Morgan or such-like to park next a classic aeoplane ? Or even an old Land rover like the Brigadier's in Dr Who ;-)Cheers, QvdG

Check avsim library soon. Its not a Morgan - I'm not sure what a Morgan is. Its a Mongrel. I took pics of black taxis from several sources and combined them to make the whole taxture, so don't look too closely! But you will notice the number plates front and back don't match. As to Landrovers, I liked them too. But a jeep might be easier! No, you're right, a landrover would be easier because you could make the back out of a cube, and wouldn't have to worry about gear sticks, steering wheels and seats.RobD.
