back to fu3

Hello, I used to fly fu3 in the glory days of this sim, but then when msfs got better and better I switched. Two weeks ago my desktop died on me and I only have a laptop with integrated intel graphics to play with.So I decided to give fu3 another try and I am really enjoying it.Now my question to this community is:Did anybody have the idea and the capability of improving the game resolution (above 1024x768) or to implement antialiasing? The one thing I didn't remember is the approach controller always keeping you at very low altitudes (2000-4000ft range), is there a fix to this?Thanks.....

Hi Towerman,Graphic can't change in FU3, you must use a 3D card with antialiasing to solve the problem. Modern card will do the job better than a software change :-). :-wave Andre

Anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering make a MASSIVE difference to the quality of the graphics in FU3, but presumably that integrated graphics chip doesn't support these features ?

The problem most people experience is that if they leave the video card set to 'auto' or 'application-controlled' for 3D settings, FU3 doesn't instruct DX to do anything. You must do it manually. I assume the reason was to minimise the FPS hit on older PCs.Simply open you card's settings and turn everything on manually for FU3. Don't forget to turn it back to 'application-controlled' afterwards, or many games will go haywire :-lolMost modern cards have settings that you can link to 'flight3.exe'. so every time you use FU3, it automatically selects the settings you put in. Just crank everything up and try it ;)As to the controller altitude problem, that should be fairly-well fixed by updated airspace files. My 'normal' ones are dated ~2005, so they're probably from Chris Low's "Seattle 2005" file set.Regards,Jon Point

Thank you , I'll try that this afternoon.

There's a fellow who has made a mod for another wonderful old Looking Glass product, the "Thief" series. He has somehow figured out a way to force support for higher resolutions, wide screen, 32 bit, Anisotropic and some other things. Hopefully-maybe our own Flt3 coding guru's would be kind enough to get with him and see if his methods can be adapted to the Flight Unlimited series. He also has the source code for his mod available for public download.http://timeslip.chorrol.com/index.htmlYou all take care,JimBoops: Mod name is ddfix. jab.

Hi Jim,All my FU3 installation are running with 800x600 and NVIDIA cards and I am happy with the results, but I will take a look at the link :-)Thanks for info.:-wave Andre

Have just tried to use the GUI version, renaming Flight3.exe into thief2.exe but ddfixGUI.exe crashs to desktop and I was unable to locate the DDRAW.dll entry in Flight3.exeSo it cam't be done the quick and easy way :-(:-wave Andre

Hello,Yes I've done this as well and had the same results as you. I even went so far as creating a "dummy" cam.cfg, didn't help. I also went into his ddfix.dll and changed the reference from thief to flight3 to no avail. Here is a screen of where ddraw.dll entry is located in Flight3.exe(20c6b2). XVI32 is my favorite tool for these kinds of things.JimB Thank you for looking into the tool Andre. Had you the chance to look at his source code? Here is a ttlg link to a rather long post where the tool author, "Timeslip" is in a discussion. :-wavehttp://www.ttlg.com/FORUMS/showthread.php?t=117616 http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191156.jpgCan the DirectX Tweak tool improve our Flt3 visual experience?http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/247/mirrors.php...and here's a fella posted some data using the tool on a fps game called FEAR:http://www.ocworkbench.com/2006/articles/DXtweaker/JimB

Thanks for links and info Jim - it's working :-)no screenshot with ctrl alt P now, as indicatedhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191185.jpgyou must use printscreen key then its inside fu3 folder as screenshot1.bmphttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191187.jpgno screenmode change at map viewhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191186.jpgit was working for 800x600 but crashs at a higher size 1280x1024I have used the manually version to fix flight3.exe using xvi32http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191184.jpg:-wave Andre

Andre,So the shot above is 1024x768 NATIVE resolution (as opposed to 800x600 up-sized)?I need to get my head around this but it sure looks interesting ;)Regards,Jon Point

  • 3 weeks later...

I'd like to try this even though FU3 looks pretty good already. The main thing was to set proper filtering in the video card config manager and link it to flight3.exe.Andre or someone else, would it be possible to upload this application with the mods required to make it work for FU3?

Am I right in thinking that this utility will allow me to run FU3 in 1280x1024 reolution ?
