November 6, 200520 yr I know I know, another bleedin' runway question. I was curious as to what happens if you have to cross the active runway? Will RC see you approaching and tell you to stop or hold short? And will this be in good time or will it tell you to stop just before entering the runway?Thanks-Phil Phil Brown
November 6, 200520 yr Moderator Hi Phil,I guess you mean v4 and when you need to cross the active enroute to the runway threshold. What RCv4 does depends on your speed as you approach the active. I don't remember the precise speed but if you cross it at normal taxi speed (15-20kts) RC will ignore you. However, if you approach it below 5kts it will assume you are holding short ready to depart. All this is new because of instead of being told to contact TWR when you're cleared to start taxiing RC4 now monitors your position and tells you to either contact or monitor TWR depending on Ai traffic.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). November 6, 200520 yr Author Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I did mean v4.So if I understand you right, in order to cross the active runway you just go across it. You won't be told to hold short pending any departures or arrivals. So it's really my own lookout to make sure nothing's pounding down the runway as I cross, and if I see something is, I should hold quite a bit short so RC doesn't chuck me to tower.Would the same apply if having to cross the active to taxi to stand after landing? -Phil Phil Brown
November 6, 200520 yr Moderator Hi Phil,<>Correct. It's up to you to keep an eye out.I have to say I've yet to have to cross the active to reach the holding point. Can you point me to a particular airport so I can test my theory?Once you've landed and cleared the active GND will tell you to taxi to a stand number supplied or to the ramp. You're not monitored or instructed when crossing any active runway.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). November 6, 200520 yr I know this was discussed in part already, but how does RC4 handle a situation where you have to "back taxi" down the active to reach the take off end of the runway? Good example would be Tahiti's Faaa (NTAA). The only taxiway for to/from the gates is at midfield, so a departure from either runway requires a taxi down the active. At either end there are very large turn outs.In real world I believe you contact the tower for the taxi down the active? In RC3 I would just taxi down while still on ground, since other wise it would clear me for take off at mid-field, which isn't an option in most cases. Thanks for shedding any light on what to look forward to.Joe Lorenc Joe Lorenc
November 6, 200520 yr Moderator Joe,In RCv4 you hold short of the active runway and having been given permission to "taxi into position and hold" (FAA) or "line up and wait" (non-FAA) you would enter the active, taxi to the turning circle and perform a 180. RC4 will clear you for takeoff once your heading is close to the runway heading.NTAA sounds the same as LOWI (Innsbruck).Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). November 10, 200520 yr Ray - dead easy - taxi from EGLL T4 for a t/o on 27R when 27L is the landing runway. Happens all the time. In reality, a taxiing aircraft would be told 'clear cross' or 'hold short' depending on traffic. I hate to say it, but even the MS ATC does this.
November 10, 200520 yr Moderator Hi Andy,It amazes me that MSATC could be that sophisticated. But, and it's a big but, the last time I tried a flight using the default ATC I was trying to work out when to switch to standard pressure as I passed the transition altitude. It eventually dawned on me that FS9 knows nothing about TAs / TLs. Yuck! :~PCheers, Ray (Cheshire, England).
