RNAV Transitions in RC4

Featured Replies

I am still considering whether to buy RC4. So far I like what I read about it.Here is a question:Does RC4 include the possibility to fly RNAV Transitions to the final approach fix? As an example Frankfurt, Munich and Cologne have these kind of transitions as an alternate way to get to final. These transitions can be cleared with a published profile or ATC will give altitude and speed assignments or even clear you to a waypoint that leads to a shortened transition.Does RC4 simulate this?Karsten

that is one of the IAP approaches you can fly. but rc isn't going to be giving you headings or altitudes. those are left to you to fulfil. you can request an iap approach as soon as you talk to approach.might want to download the manual, and read the section on iap approaches and see if that fits your needsjd

I include the RNAV transition waypoints in the flightplan guessing at the arrival runway. Part of this route may be followed be enroute. When approach contacts you RC4 has examined the AI pattern for the runway in use (or if no AI its own algorithm based on weather and runway properties) to announce the expected runway. In order not to conflict with AI patterns and to avoid vectoring you then can select an IAP for that runway and follow the transition plan on your own.If you wish and the transition is correct for the runway in use, if your GPS shows the transition you can couple it for the approach. If you have an FMC based aircraft you can load the approach there when RC announces the expected runway. The advantage of one like the PMDG updated 737s FMC is their loaded procedures includes altitude as well for the transition waypoints. You can maintain VNAV coupling in this case.In one fascinating instance RC4 approach announced one runway and later changed it due to some AI or weather influence. In this case though I was being vectored. As I recall you still can select your runway even after in approach territory and do an IAP and reload your GPS or rebrief your FMC to accommodate changes. On the PMDG 737NG FMC, waiting to select the runway and procedure on the DEP/ARR page until announced by RC4 puts the waypoints correctly into the LEGS scheme before the runway itself. You might in the FMC have to delete a previous waypoint and close a discontinuity but it does work. This also handily plots the H and V data on the navigation display so you not couple LNAV and VNAV and guide the transition with heading select and FLCH altitude functions if you wish. The data is there for you to follow and compare with your plate.I always have a hard copy of the STARS, transitions, and IAPs near me as a reference for the destination airport.

That's exactly what I usually do as well. It would have been neat to have RC handle that kind of approach and decide where you can do a shortcut or where to change the published restrictions and decide whether you should fly a standard approach or use the transition to reduce workload.
