February 12, 200719 yr The other day I was flying from Seattle to Honolulu. Painfully, I was halfway to Honolulu when one of my engines caught fire. Naturally I declared an emergency but got sent back to Seattle. Should I have waited a little longer? I don't mind having to divert to the nearest airport but not when it's the same distance behind you. So in the next upgrade or version, which ever is next or easier to accomedate, could there be an option to either:a) continue to destination or:( proceed to alternate (which doesn't really matter since they're usually next door.)This of course would be for emergencies where the aircraft needs some sort of special handling like freedom of altitude or special handling after landing but is more than capable of continuing on. i.e. Loosing one engine on a four engined aircraft smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Thanks,Ryan GamurotLucky to live Hawai'ihttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg Ryan Gamurot
February 12, 200719 yr Moderator Edited for spelling.Hi Ryan,<>If the departure airport is the nearest then that's the logical place to send you to. How unfortunate that you had this problem exactly half-way in your flight. But, I seem to remember there's an option to search for suitable alternates within the Emergency menu. If that's the case did you try it and was KSEA the suggested option? It's been some time since I last declared an E and it was in a more populated part of the world. JD can probably fill in the gaps.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 12, 200719 yr Commercial Member i honestly don't rememberi know you can get the closet 10 or 20 airports (mid ocean that might be an interesting list)i know you can return to the departure airport, and i thought you could continue to the original destination.jd JD Read my blog
February 12, 200719 yr Don't forget the point of no return includes wind considerations especially at high altitude. I've read the article about this and how pond crossers (actually the dispatchers) at each major location along a flight path for each flight taking winds and predicted altitude into account draw these large radii on the charts depicting the range of suitable alternates. Therefore it is correct for RC to let the pilot choose the emergency alternate. Perhaps at some point in the menu with the listed items in the in-flight airport choice menu (once enroute) the distance and bearing for each from PPOS can be included in a future version.
February 12, 200719 yr Moderator <>Could be very interesting in the middle of a very large pond ;-) I wonder if Ryan saved the situation just before he declared an E.I take it that irrespective of the type of E the same options are presented to the user? Hmmm, we could have fun trying to determine suitable options depending on whether it's a cracked windshield or cracked passenger! :-laugh1 Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 12, 200719 yr Author Well, I know I probably should have, but I didn't save before I declared an E. But as I was flying PMDG's 744, the failure would've cleared when I reloaded anyway. Plus my FMC will clear everything. As for the closest airports list, it was blank. My only other two options was to return to KSEA or divert to the nearest airport which turned out to be KSEA anyway. But I only had one engine out and had the situation well under control. I could've continued.Look forward to the next update or version!Ryan GamurotLucky to live Hawai'ihttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg Ryan Gamurot
