Radar Contact taxi clearances like FS ATC. Is it possible?

Featured Replies

Yesterday night after long overseas flight with PMDG 747 I landed at KEWR. Visibility was close to zero. I tried taxi to a gate. RC, when I left runway gave me a gate instruction with out any Taxi instructions as usual. I tried to find a gate under dense fog. Suddenly US Air 737 crash into 747 and we had a taxi way collusion..FsP stooped the flight and declared "crash" . Many hours long flight ended with a disappointment.I like RC and I don't fly without it. The only disappointment is always when you landed, and want to gate or to active runway, you are dealing an unrealistic story taxing in major air ports without any guidance.I wonder RC developers have any planing for future, including taxi and gate clearances add-on to RC. (not free)Is it possible, after landing RC temporally disconnects and allow pilot to connecting to FS ATC for taxi clearance to the Gate or vise versa Gate to Runway for departure. Then we can reactivate the RC either to finalize the flight or continue to our departure.May be some one already has a solution.Sanal

You Can connect to the default Flight Sim ATC when Radar Contact has finished. You must end RC4 by letting it give you permission to "Taxi To The Ramp", then close down RC4. Simply press the keyboard button (Comma I think) to bring up the default ATC and get your clearances that way. Remember though, you will just be reading as opposed to actually hearing the instructions because the voice has to be switched off for RC4 but you just wait for the instruction to appear on the ATC window and click on it in the usual way.I believe that RC5 will include the Taxi To Gate/Runway instructions when it's released. But I think that's a long way off yet.Hope that helps.Best Regards.Graham.

Graham, I tried many times. Once you connected to RC ,you can't connect to ATC even you quited from RC. Only way to reconnect to ATC you have to shot down Fs9 and you need to restart again. The way RC operates, it will prevents you to go Fs9 ATC. This is my experience. May be there is a way to do.Best regardsSanal

sounds like temp has a way to do itand just to be clear, i don't do anything to fs9/fsx atc. it's still alive and well. but i haven't spent anytime trying to make them work before, during or after rc is startedjd

JD,"If you build it they will come". A phrase from "Field of Dreams". I think this is applicable to RC and all other industries around growing field of "Flight Simulator".You should continue to build the path of "Dream" and don't give up..People on this journey are willing to pay and appreciate all efforts contributed by developers.Best regardsSanal

Sanal.I've never felt the need to use default ATC when getting clearance to taxi to the Active runway. I always use RC4 from beginning of flight to the end. As I said, you must quit, RC4 only after you have landed at your destination and only after RC4 has given you permission to "Taxi To The Ramp. When you have been given that last clearance by RC4, you then have the option to either quit RC4 or listen to the critique. Whichever one you choose, RC4 then automatically closes itself down. Only then can you open up the default ATC and proceed to get your taxi and gate instructions. I've done it many times when wanting to get a specific gate. I use FSX so maybe it's different in FS9 but I doubt it. I also mention above that you will have to read the default ATC window and use your mouse when prompted in the usual way because no voices will be heard because they had to be disabled for RC4.Failing that, just download a a parking and docking airport chart and taxi to any gate and keep looking out the window to avoid any collisions.Good Luck.Graham.

For FS9 the default FS ATC window hot key is the left single quote. RC by default does not use this. Once the FS ATC menu opens, however, you will probably have hot-key conflicts with duplicate menu key assignments. You will need to assign different keys in RC using the keyboard tab such as changing 1 to ctrl-shift-1.Also, as posted, you will need to go into the FS sound mixer and turn up the FS ATC sound.Another solution (which I have not tried in 0/0 weather) is to go into the overhead view in FS. I do not believe it is weather influenced. It takes a bit of practice but you can taxi in overhead view.A payware solution is to use a moving map that shows the position of ai and gates. http://www.fscommander.com/ is one. See the screenshots especially the Map Window selection there. This is very good for unfamiliar airports. It is available for FS9 and FSX. Some may consider it pricey but it is a multifunction utility including a flight planner, chart provider, etc. One of our beta testers uses it.FAA Airport diagrams are easily downloadable from www.flightaware.com/resources in .pdf format (no charge for this site) to help you find your way around.

If you can afford sim-charts or have any programs that have airport charts you can look at the 10-9 charts once you know the runway you are landing on. Now with FSX having all of the signs you can route yourself with no penalties. It is nice have them on a separate system, I have a laptop next to me when flying. This way you don't have to pause the sim to look at charts.

You are correct Ronzie, top down is clear of Wx.

Thanks for everyone's advise."You will need to assign different keys in RC using the keyboard tab such as changing 1 to ctrl-shift-1"Ron,I made the ATC keyboard charges to "A".ATC keyboard assignment needs to be change ("1" and "2" )not to be conflict to RC assignments . Will you please advise where shall I find RC keyboard assignments to make the changes.Sanal

Please disregard my request. It is the manual and opening screen.

I think there are two issues with this. Finding your way on the airport is the easier of the two and having hard copies of the departure and destination airport diagrams goes a long way toward making this one minor. The more difficult problem for me is AI traffic which acts as if it cannot see the user controlled aircraft. Constantly veering off the taxiway to avoid collisions is not very realistic. I've added "set collision detection off" to my pre-taxi and landing check lists. That's better, but doing a phantom mind-meld with an approaching 757 requires disabling your reality-sensors too. Neither option is very satisfactory. If reaching for FS ATC after landing and receiving a taxi clearance from RC will bring some "control" to Ground Control, I'm willing to reach for it. This doesn't do anything to help at the departure airport though. RC is a great add-on, one of the best I've seen and I'm not about to let go of it. A work-around that provides better reality on the taxiways or an outright fix as an update or in a new version some where down the road would be most welcome and very much appreciated.allardjd

Here's what I do. May sound complicated but is really easy after the second try. This assumes that RC is using the default hot keys.I leave FS ATC on and active. However, I set my radio to use COM2. RC will continue to use COM1 by default. Now when I want FS ATC, I open the FS window and press 1, 2, or 3 as usual. When I want RC, I close the FS ATC window and use CTL-1, CTL-2, etc as usual. If I want to turn off FS ATC sound, I simply tune COM2 to another frequency. So, a normal flight goes like this:I create my flight plan VFR and load as usual into RC and FS. This is necessary so that you do not have to assign an FS ATC transponder code. RC will provide IFR guidance even though FS thinks the plan is VFR. FS ATC will cooperate anytime the departing airport is not IFR only. This is the vast majority of flights. When I turn my radios on, I open the FS ATC window and ask for taxi instructions in the usual way. Acknowledge the instruction and turn on progressive taxi. Close the FS ATC window. FS is now aware of your existance and will keep you from conflicts with other ground traffic. You may have to respond to hold and continue instructions. This makes for a safe and easy taxi and does not conflict with RC.Here's the duplication. Before beginning your taxi, contact RC as usual and request taxi instructions. You will usually get the same runway as FS gave you. If not ask RC for the FS runway. You may now taxi to the runway. Obey RC commands and you will not hear from FSDO. Obey FS hold and continue instructions and you should avoid conflicts on the taxi way. At this point I usually create one more duplication and ask FS ATC for take off clearance. However, do not take off until you have RC clearance. I have forgotten why I do this but it may be required in order to keep communication with FS ATC active so that I can ask for taxi instructions when I land. If nothing else, it eliminates FS ATC complaining that you were not cleaed to take off.Once I land (after following all RC instructions, of course) and RC tells me to taxi to the gate and I confirm, I can open the FS aTC window and ask for taxi to the gate or parking. Confirm and turn on progressive taxi. Now while following the taxi line to the gate I can listen to RC's critque of my flight or Turn RC off. It all boils down to whether you think that the progressive taxi and ground control are worth the extra radio traffic. As I mentioned above if you are at a busy airport and don't want to here both FS and RC instructions to the AI aircraft as you are taxiing, simply change the COM2 frequency. I believe that the FS ATC window will pop up and ask you to tune ground control if an FS ATC hold position command is issued.--Tom________[a href=http://www.corpairamerica.com]http://mysite.verizon.net/tjrush/tjrcaasig.jpg[/a]
