Hi everyone I've finally pinned down the problematic area. For a long time fs9 crashed during flights. I began to notice that the crash occurs ONLY when flying over the USA or Canada. It's not related to addon airports/scenery. Believe me, I went down that path, uninstalling sceneies, until I realized that the default scenery is the culprit. I got some advice about a program that detects corrupt files, but it was way too complex for my level. So can I do this?- Go to the original installation discs and copy the texture files for those two places-US/Canada? I remember that during fs9 installation, it asks you which sceneries do you want installed. Well, maybe some developer could do an autogen addon. It would have to be country or region specific. Right now, it's weird to see wood homes in central Africa! But then again, flying is the ability to handle a machine in the air under challenging environmental conditions. Sightseeing alone does not make a simulator. Scenery is great in the train sims. Remember guys, we're still flying thousands of feet high. It's hazy out there, thanks to our pollution. If you want ground detail, go take a walk if it's nice outside. Eytan

The fact that MS has abandoned fs is irrelevant. The addon developers made fs2004 an exciting and comprehensive sim. SAX702- you are suggesting the lack of good atc and weather engines. What about Radar Contact or ProFlight Emulator- both excellent programs. And if these aren't good enough, go fly with VATSIM! Weather? Both REX ans ActiveSky are incredibly faithful to weather simulation. My wife's boss is an ex airline pilot. I nvited him over to look at fs2004. He said that the clouds generated by REXares better than the real thing. He used to fly Airbus. I showed him the Wilco\feelthere Airbus series and he said it's like flying the real thing. Eytan

I've been reading posts everywhere about the future of flight simulation' and who will take the lead in developing the next sim. Seems like Laminar Research is the only player left in town. But if you look at the real world of aviation, it's not like there's a new product every week\month\ year. New planes take maybe 5-10 years to develop. Same with avionic systems. I think that there's not a whole lot more to develop in flight simulation. You can't change the laws of physics that govern flying. If you look at the addon product market' it's mostly scenery. Soon every major\minor airport will be covered by developers. What's left? VFR scenery maybe, once the storage problem us solved. Most addons adress the way the sim looks on your monitor. Clouds, reflection,' shadowing, etc- these have nothing to do with the science of flying. There are aspects of aviation that, at least from the flight sim pov, aren't going to change that much: A VOR , an ILS, The GPS map, the comm/ nav radios, the autopilot, flap' spoilers, ailerons, rudders. These aspects are the basics- they won't change much- there's no need to change them in flight simulation. Autogen scenery? come on folks, if you're serious about the flying, then who cares about the road traffic and highway signs in X Plane? When you're above 3000 feet all you can see is haze. That's why i'm happy with FS2004 and its huge market of addons. I don't need a new sim every few years, because flying itself hasn't changed much. The only major breakthrough I see coming is 3D monitors. But that's still eyecandy. So the fact that MS has given up doesn't really bother me. As long af FS2004 and FSX can run on my pc, I'm happy. Hi, For years I've used two monitors- one 20", the other a 19" 4:3 size. The 19" died on me and I replaced it with a MAG 22" LED H2201L monitor as the main scrreen. Now things appear very different, and frankly, not what I expected. The panels are stretched sideways, with the gauges compressed to ellipses, not like the round shapes before. It looks awful. Even the square display screns such as the ND look squashed. Now I know monitors come in wide mode nowadays but the result for FS is not optimal. The only plus is watching movies which look great on my new monitor. Any suggestons? Or is it a question of getting used to the new look. Eytan

Well, it seems that mipmapping at 4 does the trick. The far distance looks unfocused, but that would happen normally in the real world, unless it's a rare unpolluted sky with excellent visiblity. I can live with this compromise. Eytan

Hi i think my pc is relatively fast. I have fps set at unlimited and get over 100 in the most detailed airports with ai traffic at 70%. I use REX clouds In the middle distance the scenery shimmers badly. It's really annoying. In addition any straigh line, such as taxiway lines, or wing edge appears jagged. I downloaded a utility- NvidiaInspector, but can't figure our which setting to use and how to save it.. Any ideas on hpw to correctt his?. My present setup is two monitors. One has the cockpit view while the other has a moving map, GPS FMC, or any other sub panel.I want to add a third mintor as a touch screen. FSCommander will be good for you. It's a flight planner too, and can connect to VATSIM.Eytan

HiSomething really weird is happening.If I choose to place my a/c at any airport outside of the US and Canada, no problem at all.If I choose a default US/Canada airport, fs2004 starts loading the terrain and freezes at 11%One exception though. If I choose a payware airport like KIAH, KMIA or KIAD, the scenery will load.But if from there i try to go any default airport nearby or another state, again it freezes.All other continents including Latin America will load up.I have over 100 extra airports/vfr sceneries in my library on top.Never had this problem in the past. Hey man,There's no perfect controllers. Each one has some issues. The more complex the controllers, the more potential for snags. Check out the Logitech G940. If you want the best construction quality you gotta pay hundreds of dollars.I have the Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X. It's very sturdy and trouble free. I urn the VRInsight M panel with it , soIi can control NAV/COM, various AP functions+ DME/course settings, gear and flaps.So it depends on your expectations. Quality costs, but there are good inexpensive controllers like what I have.Good luck and Merry Xmas.Eytan

Hi,I finally got the software to work in FS2004 after many false starts.I bought the voice edition when my old pc had windows xp, and it just wouldn't work.Now, under windows 7, it works well.Questions:1. My mike is a 30-40 cms from my face. I noticed that sometimes my speaking is not be detected. I discovered that if I press q for fs sound off, my words are recognized. .(this is after i did all the voice testing as per manual).I can bring back back the sound when i do not speak and perform other actions. Not having the sound on in the background reduces the realism aspect.Is there a solution to this?2. How do I speak nav ferquencies? Do I say 121 point 24, or use 'decimal?3. In the manual it says I can skip the Pre-Flight events on page 25.Surely that's missing half the fun!So if I choose not to do the pre- flight stuff, where do I begin? Pre-Start Engine? Pre-taxi? (which assumes that I have the aircraftsystems running,right?)4. The departure and arrival brief. In the 767 button edition that's quite a long speech. I upgraded my pc two months ago. I have both the button and voice versions for the 767.The button version I've had ever since it came out. I got the voice version just recently.So here's the dumb question: Is it possible to have both versions installed and running?Or is it one or the other?I thought that having both installed would let me choose which version I'm in the mood for to use with the 767.
