  1. >In FS9, is there any real diference or gain to be had between>128 megs on video vs. 256 megs onboard. Try to find out yourself. It is very easy to do. Get the ATI-Traytools (they ship e.g. together with the free and fantastic Omega drivers for ATI cards). There is an option which you can find under --> With this onscreen display you can show in one of the four corners of your monitor e.g.:- FPS- memory usage- free video memory- free texture memoryand many more.I have the ATI 9800XT with 128MB and with Fs9 the video memory is always something between 45-112Mb free. Same with texture memory, always enough available, even with more complex sceneries. So I suppose this graphic card is more than sufficient. On the other side with Trainz 2006 after some minutes all video and textur memory is full and I think because of the way they programed the handling of the graphic resources the card might be slowing down the game...Mick!

  3. Hallo Milton! You made it! You made it! You made it!I can not tell you how suprised and happy I was, when I was browsing the Avsim files today! After the great, great disappointment reading your (understandable) announcement about cancelling the Dash-7 project, this is my happiest day in my flightsimulator life! I didn't believe it until I did saw this baby on my screen. I told you about my special relationship to this bird...The virtual cockpit is amazing and so is the, preferred by me, 2D cockpit. It cost some fps but they are definitely worth the improvements done by you and your team. Much smoother display. Finally it is possible to adjust the rpm of the blades correctly. This baby flies very, very well. Also the ground behaviour seems to me much better. I suppose there was a lot of work with the .air file.On my first flight I experienced a surprise. I used the fuel burning data from the old Dash and short before the final approach all my engines flamed out. Fuel empty...These are the numbers I used as a profile for FsNav until now: Indicated airspeed Fuel flow (kg/h - lbs/h)Cruise 160kts 510kg - 1124lbsClimb 140kts 650kg - 1433lbsTouchdown 80kts 260kg - 573lbsCeiling 20.400feetObviously those values do not fit anymore. FsNav calculated for a 165nm trip From Bali (WRRR) to Surabaya (WRSJ) a fuel amount of 409kg and I loaded around 850kg into the tanks but it was not enough, so my first flight ended up in the Madura Sea near by Surabaya :-)Do you have any information about the fuel burning?Anyhow, even in this situation, because of the very good flight model, I succeeded in managing a quiet good emergency landing on water...Milton, thank you and your team very, very much for this flight simulator milestone!Yours sincerely,Mick!P.S.: Trouble with my wife is already at the horizon: "Do you play again with this plane with this nasty sound..." ;-)
  4. Hello!I use the omega driver since a long time and I have the feeling they are quite better than the original ATI driver. Along with those drivers comes a utility called ATI Tray Tools. This is not only good for tweaking the hard and software, they also offer a goody which lets you monitor you display resources. Named 'Tools&Options --> OnScreen Display'. This one can show you your actual frame rate and what is much more interesting the free video memory, the free texture memory and the system memory used by the actual application. From time to time I had similar problems with not displayed aircraft textures and a short view to my upper left screen (or wherever us place this display) showed me that the texture memory was 0 bytes free. So I changed the texture memory in my BIOS from 128 to 256 Mb and the problem was solved.Mick!

  6. I totally agree to have a seperated fs9 forum. Like many others I don't have the money to upgrade all my hardware to suit the needs of fsx!To be honest I'm getting tired to peek every day between all this fsx stuff to filter the infos for fs9.Why we cannot have a vote like these Avsim-surveys?Besides, I think here some forums which are almost dead, so why not sacrifice one of these for a fs9-only?Mick!
  7. Hello!> Running a BBS, when there were only 27 in the world, the>second one in CA. As a Fidonet Sysop for over a decade. A>TBBS Sysop for 2 decades. Supplying the Internet Free, (email>& Forums) to local users, for years with 9 lines before most>ever heard of it... Will not only confirm your statement, but>second the "motion."It is really nice to find such a prehistoric rock in this forum ;-)Nodelist.211 --> 2:2410.202 that was me :,202,A&M-SOFT,Berlin,Nicolai_Zoern,49-30-45199774,9600,V32B,V42B,CMNicolai represents me as a node taking over my complete installation, because at that time I lived already far from home in Indonesia. And to run a FidoNet Node from there was a bit above my finacial resources :-)I was running first a BBS based on QuickBbs. My network initiation took place around 1985 and after a short existance as Fido Point continues as a Fido Node on my good old Atari Mega ST, 1 megabyte ram with Motorola 68000 cpu with <<<16MHz>>> (Please dont misread MEGA Hertz, not Giga...)Later with a 68030 cpu with 32 MHz and the unimaginable amount of 4 megabyte ram, man that machine was fast!So as you can see I was already quite spoiled with system resources! Also at that time I get infected by Sublogic Flight Simulator II (ST-version, 640x400, 16 colors)>You are a pioneer,>writing software, with minimal memory, and to run on Floppy>Disks, or very small HD's, Fidonet ran some of tightest, most>well designed, good operating software in the History of>Computers. The laurel wreath does not belong onto my head ;-) As mentioned above, I was already in a privileged position. I could address the memory up to 8 megabyte without the wellknown DOS limitations... The problem was only to keep the code ANSI conform, so it could be transfered to MSDOS systems with minor adjutsments. My two cents to (mostly Atari nodes) Fido Net was a logfile analysis to give the sysyop (does anybody here still knows this expression :-) ) a full and gapless overview what went on on his system. Even the TOS version (similar to DOS) had about 5000 lines of code in 20 modules with about 131kb and a 95kb executable. The version for GEM (similar to Windows interface) had already about 45 modules with 18000 lines of code with 447kb and a 268kb executable. The biggest problem was the memory management. On the ST no problem, but how you handle a 780kb system.log on an MSDOS system?!? And that without scrambling the memory with countles gaps which occurs guaranteed if 90% of your program is string analysis. My companion find an absolut perfect way with a linked list memory management module he wrote which allows you to deallocate any tiny peace of memory in exactly the opposite order you allocated it before. And then writing the docs with LaTex and Tex...Okay, I think I'm going quite out of topic now in this forum and half of the other readers alreay fell asleep ;-) Sorry for this boo boo! I couldn't resist and am to excited to find here sombody who was a part of the so called "good old times".>It accomplished things others did not believe could>be done. The Internet might not even have been available to>millions today, without those who began networks of BBS' in>the Late 70's, and early 80's.... Fidonet was the forerunner>of the Internet.Agree! Who do not remenber names like Binkley Term, Squish, Crosspoint and so on...Mick!
  8. >>The engine is excellent.Hello!Generally I could agree with what you wrote.Maybe the engine is excellent, but one thing is definitely not. And this is the processor behind the forehead of most of the users of fs9!!!Sorry I don't mean this as an offence, I specifically include myself too!I can not count or even memorise the amount of times I read in God knows what different kind of forums something which guaranteed will speed up fs9 finally. I can not count the number of times of excitements after having installed the latest video drivers followed regularely by disappointments when dayly fs9 pratice was back and all the seemingly disappeared disturbances reappeared again...Of all those hundrets of postings there have been maybe one or two or three which had really a value because they had been based on reproducible content and NOT on felt results. Fellow simmers, be honest to yourself, every hint is taken by us like a religious revelation which we followed blindly in the faithful believe that there must be something outside there which finally releases us from our pain and raises us out of this valley of suffering and stuttering ("Brothers and sisters follow the sandal"(Life of Brian)) ;-)I think I know a little bit what good software benchmarking means. In the old days some twenty years ago I was programming this and that piece of software in good old ansi C for the FidoNet with some companions and we did not only have to fight the lack of ability to write optimum code but also the limitations of the hardware which forces us to optimise our software to the limits. That means to examine modules under very specific and exactly defined conditions for their runtime behavior which becomes more and more complex the more modules have been linked together and again influence each other in sometimes unexpected ways. What I want to say is simply that every change in settings and it's effects or side effects must be repeatable and this is only given on absolutely equal systems and exactly equal conditions! One different texture, a different daytime, a little bit different weather conditions, not to talk about other aircraft models and/or panels, another autogen library, other viewpoints and all of all is worthless. It might be good for one person under exact the circumstances he had at this moment but under other conditions or even other machines it is not reproducible and in so far worthless. So my dear fellows, don't you let yourself get frustrated! 'Sit' down in your favorite airplane, prepare your flight, fire up the engine(s), get the takeoff clearance and ENJOY your flight. And if your sim gets into stuttering, consider it as a simulated pilot hickup which cause him temporarely optical disturbances and continue your flight until a hopeful happy landing!!!SincerelyMick!
  9. Hello together!Whow, some are quite impressive lists. Here's mine:1964 Vickers Viscount (BEA) Berlin-Hamburg and return1969 Vickers Viscount (BEA) Berlin-Hamburg and returnwas my first solo flight as an 8 years old boy, having conversation with a BEA captain who was flying beside me as a passenger too. I don't even think about flight simming at that time, guess nobody did :-) I still own the original flight ticket and the flight bulletin, which you get after the flight those days:Aircraft: Viscount GAOHHCaptain: FinkeSteward: Frl.Rodinke and Frl.ThomasAltitude: 9500ft/3000mSpeed: 310mph/500kmhFlight time: 40 minutesBAC 1-11 (BEA) Berlin-HamburgMuch later:Boeing 737 (BA) Berlin-LondonA320 (DLH) Berlin-FrankfurtFokker F-70 (KLM) Berlin-AmsterdamMD-11 (Garuda) Surabaya-JakartaBoeing 747-400 (Garuda) Jakarta-Amsterdam visa versa several timesNot a very long list but some nice oldies inbetween, especially that Viscount from which I have a repaint for Fs9 with exact the same registration number GAOHH...Mick!
  10. Hello Scott>It took them a couple years to get working Win XP dirvers.I own the X52 and I use the drivers which have been delivered on a cd together with the hardware and those drivers work perfectly!>If anyone is planning on going to Vista, I would not recommend>Saitek until they show they have working drivers and profile>manager.Everything works as it should as long as you don't use the updated drivers you can obtain via windows update...Mick!

  14. Hi Milton!Thank's again for this again wonderful aircraft. There is only one other question I want to ask you with all politeness: is there any time schedule when I can expect my beloved Dash-7?Don't feel pushed, if this question is nerving you simply forget it :-)Greetings from BerlinMick!
  15. >hi but i only have the free fsuipc.dll>>rgds>Hello!I'm not the guy who tends to throw around with hints, except this one: BUY IT! It is the most valuable addon I ever bought. Never regret this 23.20

  17. >Hi Mick>>Yes - Indeed you are :-lol >>Look just right off the PFD / HSI instruments, there is a TCAS>/ VSI indicator.Hello Henrik!Hmpf, yes you are right, this one I completely ignored. Was searching on the PFD. Next time I should use my glasses :-)Mick!
  18. Hello!Lately I downloaded the file dhc8_fac.zip. The aircraft looks quite nice to me and it flies very good. But I can't find any vertical speed indicator at all on their panel?!?Am I blind or is there really none?Mick!

  20. Hello Arno!>Yes, of course. Any end user would have the same default[...]Fine!>What kind of troubles do you have with GMax? Maybe we can give>some good hints :).Call it trouble may be overdone. It's more that I'm absolut not familiar with Gmax and have the problems all beginners might have. Because there is no manual...What I hardly miss are tutorials like the movie from Bill Womack (THANK'S A LOT BILL!!!!!!) about texturing objects. This was really like staring always in one direction, seeing nothing, and suddenly a curtain is opened and you face a beautiful panorama!I am absolute no beginner with CAD. In my former job I did several thousand drawings using AutoSketch (See attachment). But Gmax is so very different that I really don't come into it so really. I fail with the most simpliest tasks, like how to arrange objects, what mode is necessary to do what, and so on.Additionally I don't have much time for learnig (family and job) so it is sometimes quite frustrating to work with Gmax.Anyhow, thank you for your offer. Surely I will revert to it if I stuck again. Your (all of yours) hints for viewer help me a lot already!Mick!
  21. >Hi Mick,Hello Arno!>Another option is XnView (http://www.xnview.com/), [...]I will give it a try too, maybe it is a little bit more comfortable than Thumbview. There are only 256 pics shown in one go.>About the copyright of the MS-textures, as long as you just>use them on your objects it is fine. As all the end users have>them as well, there is no need to distribute them or so.So it means all textures from ..Fs9Scenery... or ...Fs9Texture... I don't have to put into an eventually distribution? That would be fine. Okay let's see if it comes anyhow so far. At the moment I still fight with Gmax and the comments from the background (Darling, Dinner is ready since half an hour!!!)Thank's a lot guys!!!Mick!P.S.: Whow, just tried XnView. Fantastic!!!
  22. >Hi Mick!Hello Hugo!>Martin Wright's TView is the one I use almost exclusively...[]Good hint, just downloaded and it's really good!>Being there, might as well get DXTBmp[...]Get it too.>The biggest library you already have it contained in all the>texture folders of FS :-) and TView gives you straith access>to it ;-)But what about the copyright of those MS-textures?Thank's a lot!Mick!
  23. Hello! After finding the reason why my scenery slows down FS so much (several high detailed terminal buildings...) I give Gmax a second try (what a hard ride, still don't find any manual) and start to make my own terminal buildings. When I come to the point to give this building a texture the trouble goes on. The Gmax material editor can't read most of the default Fs9 textures, and I am also a little bit in doubt if someone may use those textures, even for freeware projects. So here are my questions:1. Is there any free program with which you can preview textures?2. Are there somewhere out some free texture libraries to download?Thank's for your help in advanceMick!
