Defragged my HD, textures load slower than ever!
>Defragging a drive never hurts, as a fragmented drive can>hurt performance, but it is only a small part in a much bigger>picture of system performance. Okay, agree. But at what scale? Milliseconds, seconds? Let's be honest with ourselves, after installing any tools which promises performance boosts, new smaller textures, and so on, we all 'feel' in the beginning something like: 'Ahhh, this runs smooth now, really fast'.Until we are back in day by day usage and actually nothing really changes :-)>I was getting lousy fs2004 performance, so finally I>reinstalled Windows XP and installed Fs2004 on a dedicated 2nd>drive that is used for nothing else, and my performance is>much improved. My XP system has much less overhead and "junk">running and the sim loads better and runs better, partially>because I have much fewer add-ons installed. Yes, but this is something completely different than defragmentation, isn't it...Why not, like we say in Germany 'Naegel mit Koepfen machen' making nails with heads:Buy a big new hard disk, copy all and everything onto this drive, delete all on the source drive and copy everything back.So the source drive is not fragmented anymore AND you have a backup at the same time.Mick!

Defragged my HD, textures load slower than ever!
Hello everybody!Did someone ever, ever measure seriously and precise the gain of speed after defragmentation of a hard disk. I believe not! I think this is more wishful thinking...My personal opinion is, simply forget it. I make several attempts and I could never ever see any noticeable differences neither with loading files nor within the simulator.Mick!

Scan AFD

Scan AFD
Do you have an english version of Fs9?For example I have unfortunately a german one which contains at the top of the scenery.cfg the following lines:[General]Title=FS9-UmweltszenerienDescription=FS9 Scenery DataClean_on_Exit=FALSEIf I wan to run ScanAFD I have to correct the string after 'Title' to the one which is used in the english version, run the program and rename it back before starting Fs9.MicK

New Version of AI Smooth on Avsim
Hi Rob!>Also, scanned for Spyware and viruses after running it ->nothing malicious found on my PC.I don't think you have to worry about this too much. I scanned the V1.bin and the exe file a little bit. They really contain strings which are related to Fs9 ai. V1.bin is full of airport names and ICAO codes and also the strings in the exe file are related to FS stuff. If it should be a virus the programmer must be quiet dumb to make himself so much work which is only seen by people like me who are going into the deep if a program doesn't work like expected :-)- The program fiddles around a lot with the registry (about 728 times, mostly read operations) but is not even looking for the fs path.- It accesses the file system about 1637 times until this silly dialog comes up(also not looking for the fs9 path) and it is looking for several dll files in its root directory which are not there.Anyhow it is very silly to publish a program in this state. I mean this is what programmers should learn at first. Put your work into another environment and start it from there and don't expect environment variables, folder structures etc. like on the system you create a program. And never, never, never use hard coded paths like this one in the exe file "C:Visual StudioVB98"I hope the creativity of this guy is better than his programming skills or at least as half as good as his self-admiration.let's see...Mick!

9Dragons Has Landed!
>Happy New Year everyone. And I do mean Happy because after>three years we can now say that 9Dragons - Kai Tak Airport,>Hong Kong has gone GOLD!!Hi Clutch!;-) How can you dare to publish a scenery like that and even for free? ;-)How do all the payware publisher look like now?(irony off)Wow!!!!!!!!!!What can I say? The installation went on perfectly. So I fired up my Fs9 and load one of your demo flights. After takeoff from Sek Kong, sneaking over the hill tops I almost crash the good old Cessna into one of the hills :-) What became visible to my eyes has been simply stunning!I don't have the words to describe my joy flying here and there around in your scenery. I think you and your friends have set a new standard of scenery design. Not that I am too good with prophecies but I dare to say if someone wants to sell a sort of addon located at Hong Kong he simply can bury that project...Thank you very, very much for this jewel!!!I wish one fine day someone will make such an amazing scenery for my hometown Berlin.Mick!

Heading Indicator Set Incorrectly Problem
> <...> and since FSPassengers doesn't>allow you to change ANYTHING mid flight without aborting the>entire #### flight, this latest issue had almost sent me over>the edge. ;-)Hello!The keyboard settings can be changed in the middle of the flight, no problem! I had several times problems to type the ICAO code into my descendometer gauge or into the GPS, so I changed the necessary keys on the fly and after typing the ICAO code change them back to the defaults...Mick!

Heading Indicator Set Incorrectly Problem
> <...> When I press the D key as instructed,>all I get is an audible warning that says "ADF" and nothing>else happens<...>Hello!This sounds to me as if you use FsPassengers. There the 'D'-key is by default assigned to set the ADF. If you press 'D' and '02355' (not the num-block) you will hear in spoken words 'ADF zero, two, three, five, five. Set and check' Means you just set your ADF radio to the frequency of 0235.5.Unfortunately the 'D' is also by Fs9 default the key which corrects the heading bug. Reassign it from the Fs9 settings menu to another key and you can go on...Mick!

128 vs. 256 onboard memory
>In FS9, is there any real diference or gain to be had between>128 megs on video vs. 256 megs onboard. Try to find out yourself. It is very easy to do. Get the ATI-Traytools (they ship e.g. together with the free and fantastic Omega drivers for ATI cards). There is an option which you can find under --> With this onscreen display you can show in one of the four corners of your monitor e.g.:- FPS- memory usage- free video memory- free texture memoryand many more.I have the ATI 9800XT with 128MB and with Fs9 the video memory is always something between 45-112Mb free. Same with texture memory, always enough available, even with more complex sceneries. So I suppose this graphic card is more than sufficient. On the other side with Trainz 2006 after some minutes all video and textur memory is full and I think because of the way they programed the handling of the graphic resources the card might be slowing down the game...Mick!

I don't believe it, she is there!!! (Miltons Dash-7 VC)
Hallo Milton! You made it! You made it! You made it!I can not tell you how suprised and happy I was, when I was browsing the Avsim files today! After the great, great disappointment reading your (understandable) announcement about cancelling the Dash-7 project, this is my happiest day in my flightsimulator life! I didn't believe it until I did saw this baby on my screen. I told you about my special relationship to this bird...The virtual cockpit is amazing and so is the, preferred by me, 2D cockpit. It cost some fps but they are definitely worth the improvements done by you and your team. Much smoother display. Finally it is possible to adjust the rpm of the blades correctly. This baby flies very, very well. Also the ground behaviour seems to me much better. I suppose there was a lot of work with the .air file.On my first flight I experienced a surprise. I used the fuel burning data from the old Dash and short before the final approach all my engines flamed out. Fuel empty...These are the numbers I used as a profile for FsNav until now: Indicated airspeed Fuel flow (kg/h - lbs/h)Cruise 160kts 510kg - 1124lbsClimb 140kts 650kg - 1433lbsTouchdown 80kts 260kg - 573lbsCeiling 20.400feetObviously those values do not fit anymore. FsNav calculated for a 165nm trip From Bali (WRRR) to Surabaya (WRSJ) a fuel amount of 409kg and I loaded around 850kg into the tanks but it was not enough, so my first flight ended up in the Madura Sea near by Surabaya :-)Do you have any information about the fuel burning?Anyhow, even in this situation, because of the very good flight model, I succeeded in managing a quiet good emergency landing on water...Milton, thank you and your team very, very much for this flight simulator milestone!Yours sincerely,Mick!P.S.: Trouble with my wife is already at the horizon: "Do you play again with this plane with this nasty sound..." ;-)

Can someone please help
Hello!I use the omega driver since a long time and I have the feeling they are quite better than the original ATI driver. Along with those drivers comes a utility called ATI Tray Tools. This is not only good for tweaking the hard and software, they also offer a goody which lets you monitor you display resources. Named 'Tools&Options --> OnScreen Display'. This one can show you your actual frame rate and what is much more interesting the free video memory, the free texture memory and the system memory used by the actual application. From time to time I had similar problems with not displayed aircraft textures and a short view to my upper left screen (or wherever us place this display) showed me that the texture memory was 0 bytes free. So I changed the texture memory in my BIOS from 128 to 256 Mb and the problem was solved.Mick!
