  1. Okie doke; no worries - I will have to revert to DX9 when using those two aircraft.
  2. Hi Steve, Thanks for the confirmation. I guess I'll just have to put up with windowed mode (first world problems, eh?). Do you reckon having tool tips on might have something to do with it? Cheers, Michael.
  3. Hi Eric, Thanks, but, unfortunately, these are already unchecked
  4. Hi all, Just bumping up this post and to let you know that I also suffer from this problem! http://www.avsim.com/topic/474491-unusual-graphics-issue-in-virtual-cockpit-in-some-aircraft/ It's a little infuriating... it seems the last thing I ever get to do on FSX and for the least amount of time is actually fly a plane and takeoff and land it! Cheers
  5. Hi all, I've known about this for a while and kind of put these aircraft at the back of the hanger until I was ready to tackle it, and now I am. Basically, it's exactly the same issue as this guys': http://www.avsim.com/topic/471088-strange-graphical-issue-with-vc/ I have the CLS 767 and POSKY 777 and I use DX10 mode in FSX-SE with Steve's DX10 Fixer which otherwise works brilliantly; I can't be sure it's an issue with DX10 but I imagine it might be since I've found next to nothing about it and these aircraft aren't recommended on DX10 anyway... but I don't want to let that stop me! B) As Kris says, everything is set up as per the guides and this only seems to occur in full screen mode (but not necessarily) and only when the cursor is visible and not over a menu or the tool bar. It goes on like this for a few seconds until the cursor disappears, but the polygons change and flicker at a rate of about 10 times a second, and outside the sky can appear black when it should be blue and the VC seems to disappear altogether (whilst the polygons continue to manifest) now and again for a brief moment. I have an i7 4790k at 4.0ghz and a GTX970, with 8MB RAM, running on Windows 7 64-bit. Here is what I mean, in the POSKY 777 (I had to use my phone as it was impossible to capture the effect through my computer at all): And the CLS 767 has it the worst: It would be great to use these two planes (as part of my 'jump in and fly' fleet) on DX10! Any tips would be much appreciated as this one has me stumped! I've tried using bufferpools and reducing the sliders in game, and modifying/removing relevant textures from the aircraft, and flying in a sparse scenery area all to no avail... Look forward to any tips! Cheers
  6. It's just Mike, I'm the most senior Michael currently in our family , and no problem! I think as the jury is pretty much out on all of the latest FSX derivatives, I will be getting the Steam Edition for the time being, based purely on the fact that it's a slightly improved version of the sim I'm used to, and it's on Steam As for OOM's, that is very much unproven ground for me anyway. There's only one way to find out, but I hope this hefty i7, GTX 970 and SSD can keep it at bay for a while.
  7. Right, more beard-scratching to do! I've been looking at P3D videos and it does look very impressive indeed - the only issue is all the addons I've spent more time than I can remember gathering for FSX... -_-
  8. Hmm, what to do... fork out £20 for FSX:SE or £40 for P3D V2.0?! I guess what it boils down to is is it worth the £20 difference?
  9. It is done. ^_^ So I've been up and running for over a week now and nothing has gone bang (yet). The build was pretty straightforward for a DIY virgin; the only difficult part was getting the case back on after wrestling with the snakes of cables! <_< I've done some benchmarking and it performs very well indeed... at least far better than anything I've ever owned before. I got Far Cry 4 bundled with my GTX 970 and it can run that very well on all Ultra settings - very pleased! At the moment my 'Performance' SSD drive reserved exclusively for FSX is sitting empty, as I decide where to go with FSX. I think I will be biting the bullet and investing in the Steam version very soon. I have got IL-2 1946 up and running with some HD mods and I am quite happy with that - though it doesn't prove much considering my laptop could run it relatively well (assuming there were no more than about 8 planes in the sky and very little going on in the way of effects)... FSX, on the other hand - that will be the biggest test. Anyways... here are some pictures! http://imgur.com/a/Ind1p Thanks for all the tips guys - I can safely say you did have some involvement in my decision making. Soon as I've bitten that FSX bullet I'll inform you of the obviously good news. ^_^
  10. It is done... Made the final purchase today, and most of the near £1000 worth of gear is sitting in my room gathering dust until I can spare the time and pluck up the courage to build it - ideally in one day. Here are the final specs, after much deliberation, procrastination, hours of the early morning squinting at my laptop screen scrutinising 101 reviews for each piece of hardware, resulting in more indecisiveness and delays... It's no wonder many people choose pre-built machines... Three months it's taken, and it's not even built! <_< And now with the introduction of FSX: Steam Edition I've got even more thinking to do! [PCPartPicker part list](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/ZbVJqs) / [Price breakdown by merchant](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/ZbVJqs/by_merchant/) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i74790k) | Purchased For £245.74 **CPU Cooler** | [Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr212e20pkr2) | Purchased For £30.10 **Motherboard** | [ASRock Z97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z97manniversary) | Purchased For £67.34 **Memory** | [G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f31866c9d8gab) | Purchased For £61.84 **Storage** | [Crucial MX100 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/crucial-internal-hard-drive-ct128mx100ssd1) | Purchased For £52.17 **Storage** | [Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/crucial-internal-hard-drive-ct256mx100ssd1) | Purchased For £77.98 **Storage** | [Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd1003fzex) | Purchased For £0.00 **Video Card** | [Zotac GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/zotac-video-card-zt9010110p) | Purchased For £266.48 **Case** | [Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-nse200kkn1) | Purchased For £37.79 **Power Supply** | [EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-100b10600kr) | Purchased For £52.12 **Optical Drive** | [Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-optical-drive-sh224dbbebe) | Purchased For £0.00 **Operating System** | [Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/microsoft-os-gfc02050) | Purchased For £49.99 **Wireless Network Adapter** | [TP-Link TL-WN781ND 802.11b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/tp-link-wireless-network-card-tlwn781nd) | Purchased For £7.54 **Case Fan** | [Arctic Cooling Arctic F12 74.0 CFM 120mm Fan](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/arctic-cooling-case-fan-afaco12000gba01) | Purchased For £3.66 **Case Fan** | [Arctic Cooling Arctic F12 74.0 CFM 120mm Fan](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/arctic-cooling-case-fan-afaco12000gba01) | Purchased For £2.82 **Case Fan** | [Arctic Cooling Arctic F12 74.0 CFM 120mm Fan](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/arctic-cooling-case-fan-afaco12000gba01) | Purchased For £2.82 **Case Fan** | [Akasa AK-FN073 109.5 CFM 145mm Fan](http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/akasa-case-fan-akfn073) | Purchased For £5.79 **Other**| Acer S220HQLBrbd 21.5" Full HD LED Monitor| Purchased For £0.00 **Other**| Fusion5 Wireless Keyboard And Mouse Combo| Purchased For £0.00 **Other**| Creative A250 (2.1) Speaker System| Purchased For £29.99 | | **Total** | Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available | £994.17 | Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-01-06 21:25 GMT+0000 | http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikejr/saved/TZWKHx PS: Anything stated as £0.00 were Christmas pressies from generous family. In the end I went for a GTX 970 which was an upgrade from the original 750Ti, and a couple of Crucial MX100's for the OS Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit (120GB) and FSX (256GB), alongside G.Skill RAM rather than Corsair. This has all meant, with all the additional bits and bobs like cables, but not including the monitor and keyboard/mouse, it is exactly double my original budget - oh how much I have learnt when it comes to the cost of a DIY build... my wallet has taken a severe beating and any moths that might have been in there after my largely broke summer, the best part of which was spent in Africa, are dust! At least the £1,000 will now pay for much of my entertainment in the colder seasons! I'm looking forward to building the rig but want to avoid blowing any of this kit up... I'll post a few photos in the next couple of weeks (/months/years) when it is finished and all polished up... explosion free. Thanks for the tips guys, very much appreciated. :Applause:
  11. Hi Gizmo, Yes - the whole reason I'm buying this system primarily is because my FSX experience on my laptop is summarily dire - unless of course you enjoy watching a slideshow of a plane landing! I'm trying to stretch the budget as far as I can go and I think a difference of less than £100 is enough for a next gen GPU in the GTX 970. Can't wait to build it now!
  12. That's the philosophy which I think is pretty proven. It's all reassuring at the very least. Thanks for clearing up the NVIDIA branding - I was never 100% sure how it worked, but as it happens you've confirmed the 970 is still the best option. Time to bite the bullet and make some more orders, along with other people's Christmas presents! Cheers.
  13. Hi Ryan, Okay, that's reassuring (though not for my wallet, of course), I want to get this right first time to avoid any upgrades - and expenses - for literally a few years. I do a fair bit of tweaking of add on aircraft where it is simply a one second edit of the aircraft.cfg file; swapping between aircraft is the most infuriating thing whilst waiting for the aircraft selection menu to load every time. So this along with the initial FSX loading time would make for a much improved experience. ^_^ Ideally I would have everything FSX related (minus a number of non-integrated add on softwares) on the SSD but once it gets full I'd perhaps have some scenery on the 1TB WD Black HDD... but that's a very long way off! I can imagine that the performance of the WD Black would be noticably better than my laptop 500 GB 5,400 RPM HDD... The current best value option for the FSX SSD is this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BQ8RM1A/?tag=pcp0f-21 .
  14. I think that with my current experience of running FSX (everything on one 500GB HDD), even with just a handful of add-on planes, no scenery and even with a defrag loading times of FSX can take up to 5 minutes and flights about the same. I might not necessarily have FSX on one SSD entirely, just have some add-ons such as scenery located on a HDD (1TB WD Black to be precise). I plan on having the OS on one standalone 60GB SSD so it would be impractical to have FSX on this too. From what I've read around it cuts loading times dramatically, but is so dramatic to be worth £70-odd? Who knows.
  15. Nice one, Zotac it is - love that 5 year warranty. Plus... I've actually found it on offer with a free game! Updated specs: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikejr/saved/TZWKHx Had/having a few of things bought for me since it's Christmas (how convenient!) and that's already a big help. Also I've decided to go for the dedicated SSD option on which to run FSX - is this worth it with this system? Is 250GB enough? Final question, I have 4 case fans (2 of which came with the case), all PWM control, and just bought this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400747567451?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT since the mobo only has one fan header, my question is, with all the fans being 4-pin, and only one of the pins on this adapter obviously having useful 4-pin connectivity, will all the fans still have controllable RPM; isn't that the point of this adapter? (Better explanation here: http://www.gelidsolutions.com/products/index.php?lid=2&cid=11&id=63&tab=1)
  16. Nice one stans, I'll bear that in mind. As it happens the Zotac card has gone up, so the MSI Gaming edition is now at the top of the list. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikejr/saved/TZWKHx If the Zotac one comes down before the end of the week I'll happily be going for that instead. All in, at £1,120 with everything, it is 224% over budget! Oh well, that's a forte of the UK at the moment! Better be worth it! :Praying:
  17. Great! Thanks! One final hurdle is deciding between the manufacturers of the GTX 970. I've heard about such (minor?) issues like coil whine from some of the cheaper cards... Should I go with the Zotac (http://bit.ly/1vwNlWo) or the MSI ( http://bit.ly/10yI7Nz )? Is it really worth the price difference?
  18. EDIT: I've gone for the GTX 970, as it seems to be at a really great price here: http://www.ebuyer.com/663452-zotac-gtx-970-4gb-gddr5-dual-dvi-hdmi-displayport-pci-e-graphics-card-zt-90101-10p (pcpartpicker specs updated also). PS: i7 CPU arrived today! Without everything else its a very shiny, very small and very expensive slab of metal at the moment!
  19. Ok... I took the plunge! This morning the i7 4790k was on offer from Aria and I couldn't resist that £25-odd saving... I've also gone for the Z97M mATX mobo and yes, after some deliberation, I will be buying the GTX770 in the near future. ^_^ Check out my updated specs: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikejr/saved/TZWKHx I decided it really is worth investing in a decent machine, especially if I want longevity... even if it is nearly £300+ over budget! Coming soon to a busy, wet and foggy but silky and smooth FSX sky near you! :Praying:
  20. Okay! I'll do a little more tweaking! Anyone know where I can grab a monitor for cheap, would like to avoid spending nearly 100 quid on it! Might have to resort to old eBay...
  21. Hi Charlatan, Thanks for the advice. If I change the RAM to your preferred choice pcpartpicker mentions something about incompatibility with regard to the 2666MHz RAM speed being restricted by the motherboard, would this be removed with the Gigabyte board?
  22. Thanks for the tips guys. Following on, and particularly with gizmosellsbunnys suggestions I've used UK pcpartpicker and come up with this: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikejr/saved/TZWKHx This is well over budget (and with the monitor and OS to come I'm estimating another £100+) but I've accepted I'm probably not going to get what I want for the money and it's probably a worth-while investment, so long as I spend and save wisely! Think my credit card may have to take some of the hit... -_- What do you think? Will I be flying around Heathrow in fog and rain with busy Christmas traffic in a silky smooth Aerosoft A320 cockpit? Considering improvements with P3D and other potential FSX successors, could it do that (and compete with some of the newest games too) for at least two to three years? :Praying:
  23. Thanks for the quick replies guys, The GTX 780 is nowhere close to my budget, unless I just want to display it on the mantelpiece! The 970 would really be just about manageable so long as I compromised on the CPU - but with all the debate over i5 and i7s, bearing P3D in mind, is it not plausible to stick with an i7 and compromise on the GPU with something just a little higher spec than the 750Ti, considering with FS the CPU is the killer? Of course, I know that the difference between some i5s and i7s is negligible and not even noticeable on a day-to-day basis... Of course, it is important to consider that hopefully that setup would be adequate for COD 4, Counter Strike, etc. too? At the end of the day this really is a (admittedly bronze-plated) budget system and anything is better than what I have and an upgrade in a year or two would improve things once I get used to and bored with whatever I have to begin with. Is there anything you'd recommend with an i7 between the 750Ti and 970, or would a compromise on the i7 for the i5 4690K see me still getting the performance we can all normally be happy with, and for at least another two years with other games? The motherboard is a Gigabyte B85M-HD3 Motherboard mATX - I need to bear space in mind here too. Check out my wishlist: http://www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/29YX0GGP7YAON for full specs.
  24. Hi all, I am thinking of taking the plunge and upgrading massively to a proper gaming machine, let alone an FSX dedicated system; anything is a step up from my four-year old Dell 1545 Inspiron with Intel GMA Graphics and Pentium T4500 @ 2.3GHz! Basically, whether or not it's a 'budget' system is up to you, but what I've come up with so far is about £650+ ($1020), minus the monitor and peripherals. It's based on: i7 4GHz 4790K CPU 2GB Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti GPU (bang for buck) Corsair 8GB Vengeance DDR3 RAM The OS will be Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed on a dedicated 60GB SSD (Win 7 found for 30 odd quid! ) Please check out my full specs/list of items, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/29YX0GGP7YAON . Bottom line: I'm looking for a system that consistently, efficiently and reliably runs FSX on high to max settings with a combination of complex addons (think PMDG, Captain Sim, UK2000/Aerosoft scenery, REX, GEX, UTX, WOAI/UT2 AI, etc. etc.) - to put a number on that - anything at or above 15FPS as a minimum will be silky smooth compared to what I've had to put up with to this point. The other bottom line is this really is at the limits of my budget, originally I was (and still am) dreaming about figures around £500 ($785), but really it should be no more than £650-ish ('ish' being conservative) otherwise it will frighten my wallet! So far I've been told this should be more than adequate for many modern games, but what about the FSX experts? Is it worth making a bit more of a compromise or is this value for money bearing in mind universality, longevity and ultimately improvements of subsequent iterations of relatives of the original FSX? Any pointers in the right direction would be helpful - I'm hoping the wishlist won't require too much modification now - it's been around long enough! ^_^ All and any help is much appreciated, guys. Thanks in advance!
