  1. Strangely, I’ve started experiencing stutters as well which I haven’t had since the FSX days.  I tried everything and settled on locking FPS in sim to 30, forgoing vsync and triple buffering.  Seems to have done the trick for me.  Test after test revealed that the in sim vsync was the culprit on my system.

Something certainly has changed, not sure what it is though.  Really don’t have the time as I used to to test out theories.  But my system has been smooth for a long time up until a month or two ago.  I run Win 7 64 with an I7 6700k @ 4.6GHZ (no HT) 16 Gig ram,  1080ti 11gig vram and a 1080p monitor 144hz.  I can run my monitor at a customized 30HZ but introduces screen tearing/lag if I Pan to fast. Process lasso being run as well.

I'm in the market for a UHD display as an upgrade from my Sony 32" 1920*1080 TV. Don't look at my specs below - a new PC is about to be purchased.

I've called it a display rather than a TV or a monitor as I'm weighing up the pros and cons of each. But space (or lack of it) is going to be the deciding factor I'm afraid.

We all know that for a given distance a larger display will have a greater immersion factor than a smaller one. So go as big as you can afford or have the space for them! Well yes, you could but there's a catch.

Take two UHD displays - one is a 40" TV and the other is a 32" monitor. You might think that at the same distance - say 1 metre - they'll both look as impressive. Yes they will but in different ways. The larger 40" will give you more immersion simply because of its size. But the aircraft's gauges or electronic displays will not be as sharp as a smaller UHD display. Why?

The answer is pixel density (PPI) or how many pixels per inch the display has. The smaller the display for any given resolution the higher the ppi. And the higher the ppi the sharper things will look.

Starting with my current 32" Sony 1920*1080 TV it has a ppi of 68.84.

If we move up to a 3840*2160 UHD monitor also 32", the ppi increases to 137.7. Double what we had before.

So how does a 40" UHD TV measure up assuming you're going to sit 1 metre from the screen? Well the ppi drops to 110.2. That's a big drop from 137.7. A reduction of 20% compared to the 32" monitor but the size goes up by 25%. So you could argue you gain more than you lose. This explains why I've felt a little short-changed when I've sat in front of a 40" UHD TV with P3D running. I just felt the sharpness was a little lacking.

How do these enormous 50" UHD TVs match up? A 50" has a ppi of 88.12; a 55" is 80.1 and a 65" drops to 67.8. Less sharp than a 32" 1920*1080 display but much bigger obviously. Definitely immersion over sharpness.

So at the same distance the monitor wins hands down for sharpness but at the expense of immersion. It's up to you which is more important for you. For me, because of the big gap in the market between 32" and 40" 16:9 displays I'm going with the monitor because of space limitations but I'm gaining in one way even if I'm losing out in another.

This is probably my next monitor - the  BenQ 32" PD3200. I don't think I'll be disappointed.

My thanks to @MarkDH for providing the link to the useful PPI site.

    Great info. Thanks @Ray Proudfoot

I've been holding out on purchasing a 4K monitor with the hopes that the black Friday deals will lessen the cost a bit.  I have one particular one in mind, this Samsung UH750 32" 4K.  The BenQ you posted certainly looks good as well and I may just consider it.

  3. Although I've been simming since the sublogic days, it really started to hit me that sims were starting to evolve when I got into combat sims.  Particularly Microprose and their early version of F-15, DI and their Tornado, F-14 Fleet Defender and lest we not forget all of the Janes combat sims (which I still have all of their CD cases and manuals).  During that period was when I started to get more interested into flight dynamics and the avionics systems.  It also had to do with the fact that I was going to college for Avionics at the time, but the passion was always there.

Of course you look back at those sims today and I can't believe I thought they were state of the art, but remember a 1MHZ processor was state of the art back then too.  I miss those days, brings back memories.  Wish Janes would come back, but DCS seems to be filling that void nicely.

Wonderful series of pictures! Feels like one is there! I have traveled via Frankfurt many times and, I believe, at least twice in the 747-8, when they started deploying it instead of their A340-600. Thanks for posting.

I worked in BOS for 18 years and only got to see Lufthansa fly this into there one time and it was only due to a strike.  The plane sat there for a week.  I didn’t get to go inside since it was parked remotely, but did notice the marked difference in length.

I’m back at JFK now, but haven’t had a chance to see if it’s ever made an appearance there.  Although I did see Cathay Cargo taxiing one past terminal 8 yesterday.

    Great shots Dylan!

Good to see at least someone else is enjoying her.

I remember the good old days when a new release spawned a flood if great shots here.

Good to see at least someone else took the time to show the community a great set of shots of a marvelous plane.🙂

Still deciding if I'll add a photo tail to this livery.  Not a big fan of it...still love the "old" livery.

Thanks Steve.  Times have changed.  Most are posting videos and/or streaming on twitch rather than grabbing screenies.

i agree, very much still like the old livery, but this ones growing on me.

Good day.. I am a 52 year old guy who frequently posts on Avsim when required. In some forums I'm am getting blocked by an application called "Spamhaus". Is this a virus or a "legit" app? I only ever post advice to other users..It says my IP is blacklisted...is this a scam in itself? Regards.

Not a scam.  Enter your IP address on this web page.   https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/     It will show you how to unblock yourself.

My major complaint with the QW787 is the lighting quality of the displays.  I find that they are so bright to be unusable in the VC mode and only decent in the 2D mode.  Changing settings does not make them work well for me including disabling many advanced graphics setting used in P3D versus FSX.  They need major work IMHO.  I tried using the HUD for my flying to get around this problem since the HUD is normally used in 787 OPS but it is a bit jumpy and hard to use for landing guidance.  Not sure how to fix that as it exists even on autoland but I much prefer to land myself.

As a result of the VC lighting, I find this a/c stays in my hanger which is too bad and I love many of the features.

I thought this was proved not to be an inherent issue with the aircraft, but with users set ups.  I may be wrong, but thought I saw that on their forums.  I know I’ve never had these issues.  Again goes back to my previous comment.  Everyone’s experience is different.

For me, I just wish weight and balance were easier to deal with - RTFM on my part would probably help with this.

It’s not just you, I don’t think a lot of us like their weight and balance system.  In fact it was brought up during the FSELITE interview at the Flightsim Expo in Vegas.  You can find the interview on YouTube.  I’m on my phone or I would post the link.  QW really seemed keen on hearing users feedback on the aircraft.  Definitely shows their intent on listening and applying what they’ve learned from the feedback they receive.
