    Hi All.

In a recent update which brought the USA update to us, there was the mention of a new "Discovery Flight" up the Eastern seaboard of the States. But I'm damned if I can find it to undertake it. Can anyone help please?

    Thanks.

The discovery flights have a short shelf life, typically going away after a major update has taken place.  Not sure if someone has the actual flight plan, but it's basically a flight leaving from KSWF, flying down the Hudson River, then through NJ, PA, DE, MD and finally ending at KDCA.  The aircraft used for the flight was the Cessna Caravan.

Here's a link to a youtube video showing the actual flight path in the first 10 to 15 seconds of the video.

  2. Thanks for the heads up.  Was waiting for this sale and curious about this too Benjamin.  However the 767 even at $79 (after the $20) is still prohibitive for me, just because I'm trying to upgrade the old PC.  I do want to get the 757 Freighter expansion.  I put the forum post for peeps to see.

    Captains,
Goodbye 2020 sale (all* Base Packs are $20 off) starts at 2020Z 20DEC 2020.
Runs for 20 hours only. See you at https://www.captainsim.com/store/

    * all with regular price over $20.

  3. SSAA is a killer, but one thing that has really helped me to tame this setting is to purchase a 4K monitor to mitigate the need for such a setting.  Cost prohibitive I'm sure, but sort of a cure nonetheless.

    • 1080Ti will not be able to handle anything above 2X SSAA use 4X to 8X MSAA

A 1080Ti can handle anything above 2X SSAA, but you will need to sacrifice other aspects of your graphics settings to achieve a good balance.

It is also very much understood that another chunk of users fully support our competitors and others bringing our weather add-ons, they just don't want HiFi getting involved at all.  We understand this is mainly just a competitive thing, they are trying to protect the developers they support and don't want them to have any competition. We also disagree with this, as competition has done amazing things in weather and all things in our hobby.  It pushes everyone forward.  As a matter of fact, I wonder, in all the years of Active Sky, have any of our features influenced any other sim or other add-ons features?  I'm thinking we've influenced at least a few.

I'm surprised no one commented on @Damian Clark's quote here.  For this very reason is why HIFI needs to join the fray.

To be fair to HIFI they've always updated their product whenever updates of P3D or Xplane11 broke their product in a timely manner. You can always rely on them to fix things, so I don't think they would be any different with MSFS.

Agree, but the cadence of MSFS updates are of a much higher frequency versus the P3D or XPlane quarterly or bi-annual ones.  I'm certain it would be tough to keep up with.

The current discussion around foilbles post-patches, the sense MS/Asobo isn't paying attention or acting on what is being suggested, the sense overall quality is deteriorating post initial release, are arguably valid concerns.  I'm curious though, would YOU have preferred to wait until 1, various issues such as AP/Garmin/ATC/Flight Characteristics/SDK were more fully mature and capable?  Or 2, do you prefer to be able to sample MSFS of Aug 18th, and standby to see how it evolves to that same endpoint in option 1 above?

Personally, I will vote option 2.  I've had a ball with MSFS so far, can easily see its shortcomings and look forward to it evolving to a more mature state.  MS/A has said, I read, they are in it for the 10y haul and will not forget hard-core simming folks' needs, which often ties in directly w/ 3rd party developer needs as well.

Great poll question and looking forward to the responses.  I'm also with you on option 2.  I went into this knowing full well it will take years before this sim meets it's ultimate potential.

Well, I had a good read from Mathijs Kok at Aerosoft: https://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/157318-a-glass-of-wine-and-mildly-vindictive-ponderings/.  More or less, Mathijs gives his projection of the flight sim market and where it is headed. The most interesting part of his writing was this:

Seems like P3D users stopped purchasing add ons in early 2020.  XPlane users are still buying add ons at the moment so it seems Aerosoft will continue to develop for X-Plane in the meantime.  But in general, the writing is on the wall.  If MSFS keeps advancing, the SDK gets better, and the simulator continues to become more refined, it's in the best interests of 3rd party developers to switch over to MSFS in the longer run (ie. over the next 5 to 10 years).

Actually a great read and although I take Aerosoft's comments about MSFS with a grain of salt since they kind of do have a vested interest on how well the platform does (what @G-RFRY said), some of what Mathis says does ring true for me at least.  The moment we had confirmation that MSFS2020 was going to drop this year, I immediately stopped buying add-ons for P3D.  Then again, I have a ton already anyway.  I'm sure if I were to add up all the money spent supporting P3D and third-party developers, it would probably amount to $5K plus easily.  I don't want to speak for all P3D users, but when you use that platform, more than likely you are a discerning type of simmer who is willing to invest in the experience.  Once MSFS dropped and we saw the fidelity that a modern Flight Sim was capable of, I'm sure there are quite a few of serious P3D simmers started asking themselves some questions like; is investing that type of money in one sim sustainable?

Yes, I still fly P3D, but I will not invest another penny into it.

So before Asobo ever mentioned an Alaskan Bush Trip I had already started working on my very simple one to learn how to create one. Myself and a few others are on my Discord channel  ( link in my signature ) helping each other learn. It's an extremely simple one with only one Point Of Interest between each leg as  I learn. Also, hopefully Alaska is include in the scenery update Tuesday as it needs some help, with water elevation etc... You just have to ignore that for now. Like I said, I am still learning about XML, and making bush trips. Also, a very nice person on my Discord created a very simple GUI tool to help out with making bush trips. It saves a ton of time. The community is amazing for MSFS. So many developers big and small already. Hope you at least give it a try.

    Nexusmods:

    Flightsim.to:

    Nexusmods:

    Bush Mission Generation Tool!

If you need assistance the developer and us will try to help you. I know my bush trip is super simple, but still learning. Hope you like it? Can't wait to see what Asobo's is like. I really like bush trips/missions 🙂

This is great!  Thanks for sharing.

Believed to be the first time in the four-decade history of the A-10 that a pilot has landed with no canopy and landing gear up, the Air Force said Maj. Brett DeVries, an A-10 pilot with the Michigan Air National Guard, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on Friday for an "extraordinary" emergency landing.

That is awesome!  Not at all surprised that someone was able to do this with an A-10.  Truly an underrated aircraft that continues to stand the test of time.
