  1. If you purchase a Navigraph subscription, you can even load current LIDO charts on your tablet or PC. Then you are up-to-date with the aircraft's FMS data. I used to use PDFs and Goodreader for charts, but it is quite time-consuming to have all airport charts up-to-date. Better to have this done professionally.

I concur. When I first bought the AS Airbus I managed to bumble along with a single cycle of NavDataPro AIRAC data (purchased rather than the default so that I could use it in both PFPX the Airbus) and PDF downloaded charts for about a year. But then I was finding that randomly downloaded charts seldom matched the AIRAC data that I had. So I bit the bullet and bought the 9€ per month Navigraph subscription that gives me matching (and up to date) charts and data. I think it's good value and the charts are a piece of cake to use (with hopefully an Android app soon to compliment their iOS one).

  2. I've been back and forth with this a few times over the past week or so;

    • Was on W7 and took the free update to W10.
    • Not convinced on W10 at all (at least via the update route) as my mouse kept freezing periodically and initially I couldn't get DSR working either.
    • Create a W10 USB boot memory stick for a fresh install. Better but still not that impressed, so decided to go back to W7 (still have the DVD). So going through that at the moment.

A quick thing to note - if you want to remove the rather annoying 'Get Windows 10' message that sits in your system tray then uninstall Windows Update KB3035583.

  3. Thank everyone for your informative and very complete answers.  Also a special thanks to the folks who wrote the longer responses.  I know this took some time and thought.  What we have is some very useful info (I think) for non-pilots like me.

I have come up with a game plan.  I first will buy FS Commander to master creating flight plans, and to understanding SIDS, STARS, Air Routes, etc, etc.

Then I think I will buy and master the Aerosoft Airbus.  Once I get proficient with that, it will be the 737 NGX.

    Happy Flying, PDX

I was going to suggest the AS Airbus as well, but it looks like you've decided - good choice!

Before you take the plunge with FSCommander consider having a look at some other flight planning tools - I had a quick try of FSC but found the UI pretty horrendous (though I'm sure it can do a lot). Aivlasoft EFB does a similar thing (though not as comprehensive for flight planning as FSC from what I gather), but the combo I ended up with, specifically for the AS Airbus, was PFPX and a 9€ per month subscription to Navigraph for charts and data. PFPX has a much better UI for flight planning than FSC - yes it doesn't have the STARs, SIDs etc but it has them available for selection and at that point you switch over to the Navigraph cloud charts for final programming of the FMC.

  4. 1 -Click your right mouse button on the desktop.

2 - Click on Display Settings.

3 - Look for the option "Change the size of the text...". It could be 200%. If so, change to 100%.

Now you are ok to go with DSR working right.

Right - I have sorted it using this method. The crucial point that I missed out first time round, and that should be highlighted is that you need to be running P3D with a flight loaded at the time. I was doing it prior to launching P3D, hence why it was always at 100%. Doing it whilst P3D was running instead meant that when I went to the text size setting, it was already set to 200%, and reducing it to 100% gave me the x4.0 DSR I was expecting.

  5. Here's some free advice for you:  You don't need DSR or NVI set psecial to run v3.  P3D v3 runs just fine as it is, as long as you only apply two or tweaks to the cfg, that's it.

    -Jim

Err, I can say pretty categorically having gone from the same setup in W7 to W10 that DSR working correctly is much better - specifically the PFD (and other displays) are much clearer and more readable in the AS Airbus with DSR than without.

  6. Works fine for me. Did you remember to change the in-game resolution to match the new DSR setting?

    Yes, I have done that.

1 -Click your right mouse button on the desktop.

2 - Click on Display Settings.

3 - Look for the option "Change the size of the text...". It could be 200%. If so, change to 100%.

Now you are ok to go with DSR working right.

I recall seeing that mentioned when I was looking for solutions yesterday, and checked - it was at 100%.

This is intriguing though, the fact that it is working for you guys in W10.

  7. Does anyone have the above combo working?

I tried moving to W10 over the weekend, and ended up with a totally clean install on my HDD. However, I used DSR in W7 (x4.0) and wanted to use it in W10 as well but it doesn't seem to work - the mouse cursor enlarges but that's about it. I have tried restarting P3D and going between full screen and windowed but to no avail.

Any suggestions before I pull the plug on the great W10 experiment and go back to W7?

  8. UK2000 scenery can actually be installed directly to v3 just by specifying the directory paths during installation, which is a nice refreshing change of pace for legacy airports. :)

    -Jim

Ah, didn't realise that - I think I used the EMT when installing into P3D2 and still have my 2.5 install kicking around so pointed the scenery library at that in v3.

Also his free versions are good, and a nice step up from default airports.

  9. To be honest, using FTX England and EGLL UK2000 with the 777 is just asking for trouble - even in V3.     You still need to manage expectations with V3.

This. Also make sure that if you're flying out of EGLL you have your other payware airports in the general vicinity (EGKK, EGLC, EGSS) unticked in the scenery library - no point in having them using VAS if you're not flying into/out of them. If I'm using payware airports I only have the departure and arrival airports ticked in the scenery library.

  10. I know you didn't but Erich thought it was.  And I am amazed because DSR seems rather heavy on the system to me, less heavy than HDR. I thought that with your system turning off HDR would't make much difference but DSR would, but in a negative way, so all in all I would have expected a loss in performance. I tried DSR once but the performance hit was too big to make it worthwhile. This week I hope to test a 980Ti though so I might give this a try once more!

Now that I use DSR at x4.0 I can't go back - it really brings the detail out. Doesn't seem to give me much of a performance hit as well.

Anyway back on-topic - I will definitely give this a try as a lot of stutters (even going back to FSX) seem to be related to sound being loaded.
