Flight.CFG file: Terrain LODRadius setting
I just tried 6.5 LOD and while it doesn't really slow down loading the scenery by much, it seems to limit my FPS at 30 instead of 60... I saying it's self limiting because it runs at 30fps no matter where I am or what I'm looking at. Note that I use triple buffers to avoid this so I'm not sure what setting in flight.cfg to change to undo this limit. (If indeed it's FLIGHT doing the limiting ;) ) UPDATE: Fixed. Had to remove the VSynch from FLIGHT and only use D3DOverrider to vsynch + triple buffer. Turns out that 6.5 lowered my FPS from 120+ to around 50 ;). Switched to 5.5 and now all is well at 60 everywhere. LOD makes a very nice difference I must admit.

What are we giving up by moving from Flight to FSX?
All of the above + one that's very important to me, MOUSE controls in FLIGHT are simply amazing. Sometimes, I just want to fly for a few minutes (usually gets me flying longer than I want, but hey ;) ), and not having to get out my setup (HOTAS joystick, TrackIR5, etc) and just use the mouse to fly is just heaven.. Sooo simple to control the plane with the mouse compared to FSX.

Perspective
Good thing there's a registry tweak to bring the start menu (for those that will want to try out Win8)... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RPEnabled=0 (instead of default 1). BUT, I've read that MS wants to remove the tweaks enabling users to disable Metro... so I'm not sure if it'll will work when the RTM version is out. P.S. I can't try it yet (the tweak above) since I don't have Win8 installed (yet or ever)

Do I still buy TrackIR after the demise of Flight?
I just bought mine about 10 days ago (mainly for Flight) after doing some research. I ordered it from HS (not sure I can post names of companies here so using acronyms), and received it 2 days later. Had some issues with them not providing the proper shipping costs, but other than that, great service, packing as well. When I started using it in flight, I went bonkers... what a difference it makes! It's so different as a matter of fact, that I had to get used to land again since my line of sight (not always centered since I enjoy looking around so much ;) ) isn't always centered anymore... so I had to get used to the *plane* position relative to ground instead of just using my LOS. After a few hours, it was as if I hadn't lived TrackIR ever :) ... VERY easy to get used to (in my case anyhow). As for movements used to control the camera... I use 2 settings... one for lazy flying where I barely move my head to get the camera 90 degrees left/right/up/down -- and I **do mean** barely moving it.. less than 5 degrees I'd say. On this setup, I have NO dead zone so it's hard to recenter properly although you get used to it by using the cockpit position to get a feel of center. The other setting is more "reasonable" whereas there's a deadzone (although a small one) but its "notch" tells me I'm centered... and moving right/left/down/up has me move my head 7-12 degrees (rough approximation since I'm not sure how to measure this). Point is that both are comfortable and this guy (me) is a happy camper loving his new precision instrument! When I heard that Flight development was cancelled, I felt cheated in a way since I had just purchased TrackIR5 & all the addons (except for 3 planes) including the latest Carbon (steam on special at 11.24$). BUT, I KNOW that this wondeful controller (TrackIR5) will last me for years as I've read that people have had theirs for 5-6 years (version 3 I believe) and they're STILL using it! I've also purchased FSX Gold (took me a week on the phone with the MS Live team to figure out issues they were NOT able to resolve... had to create a brand new account, buy GOLD from that account then download it). Account does not seem to be an issue since my FSX doesn't connect to GFWL anyways. So, I bought it and it also works well with TrackIR5 although the same profile doesn't work exactly in Flight & FSX so I have one for each. Profiles are easy to setup & save. What I love about this item though is that it can really be as sensitive as you want it to be. I had one Sooo sensitive, that whenever I was talking, the screen was jumping all over lol :P -- not using that profile now, but it CAN be that sensitive and let's not forget, very precise.. even over long periods of usage. So, if you're wondering it it's worth it, I'd say yes if you plan on playing other sims that will support it. (FSX, Wings of Prey, DCH, xPlane etc). At first I thought I'd return it when flight was cancelled, but decided to keep it anyways it's that good and I plan on keeping using Flight, FSX and any next decent sims that (hopefully) will come our way -- which makes me wonder if Silent Hunter 4 supports it & F1 2010 which I'm going to test after this post. /cheers

The End of Flight?
What a sad news! I just came back to Siming after 10+ years or so, and it was Flight that brought me back to it. I enjoyed it so much, I went and purchased a TrackIR 5, FSX Gold for more complete training (radios, ILS etc) + Hawaii Starter Kit + Alaska (both BEFORE the Steam Summer Sale), and a T.flight HOTAS. Being on a low budget, this was a huge investment for me. Now, I admire what they did with the Flight engine which I find really well designed, beautiful and running extra smooth on my setup. I was empty yes (no ATC, air or road/sea traffic), but I always thought that they'd eventually add DLCs or free addons to liven up the world. Hearing about this news that they stopped development for Flight was a blow (even though I had nagging a suspicion about it being successful or not -- trying to find out how well the company was doing with Flight). For the last 2 weeks, I've been starting flight for the "Aerocache of the day" (since Alaska doesn't have them listed) and wound up playing for many hours, trying different stuff, enjoying the scenery. I "felt" I was getting back into the Sim mode in a deep way using both FSX & mostly Flight but ... wow... getting speachless here... At least, they'll continue supporting it for a while. I'll probably buy the VC CArbon WHEN it on special.. I like the ease of landing the plane affords, even though it's slow compared to the Maule. BUT, there is now NO way to find the "Curvature of the Earth" Aerocache without cheating which saddens me. I really wanted 1 kind of jet based airplane. Guess we'll have to wait and see if they release an SDK (which, to me, would represent a huge step from MS to the community that loves this Sim). Just needed to comment on this tragic end to a sim which I thought had tremendous potential. RIP. Note that Flight showed others what *can* be done engine wise... who knows... perhaps something good will come out of this. And I know I'll still enjoy it for the foreseeable future.

"Aerocache of the day is not available"
Did a better search to find those posts and found few more topics than I had previously. Thx for the info.

"Aerocache of the day is not available"
Hi folks, Just restarted playing MSFlight 3 days ago and really getting back into it now... to the point where I'm trying to buy MSFSX Gold from the marketplace (only 29.95) but will have to wait 'till support fixes an issue with their account stuff. In the meantime, I noticed, that the Aerocache of the day is NOT available, and hasn't been since I restarted. I checked my connection status which is fine (connected to flight servers on the aerocache page) & GFWL. Is anyone else experiencing this? Googling this problem turned up 1 link to here but related to connections problems (which I don't have). thanks in advance... R
