The 42nd running of the Iditarod - The Last Great Race - is almost here. Sixty+ mushers will drive their teams from Anchorage to Nome, leaving on March 1st. The logistics of supplying the 25 remote checkpoints would be very difficult without aircraft. The IAF is a group of 31 volunteer pilots who make a lot of things happen during the 3 weeks of Iditarod. They will carry injured dogs, veterinarians, checkpoint volunteers, as well as tons of dog food, bales of hay, lumber for tent cabins, cooking fuel (heet), groceries, etc. Checkout the IAF website to learn more about this great group of pilots. Their website is at www.dogflying.com.

Currently, the Iditarod 2014 sled dog race is taking place in Alaska, and EPOCH Alaska Virtual Airline is providing lots of services for the race. Here are some pictures from a job I did yesterday morning -- I had to take a crewmember and dog supplies from Merrill Field to Skwentna, and then head for Shirley Lake to check the condition of the parking area. But first, I had to get from Anchorage to Merrill Field -- by car  Overview of the route I took with the car: And here's the aircraft I'm using during the next days for Iditarod jobs: About one hour later, I took the passenger and the dog supplies onboard and started. The landing at Shirley Lake took me 2 attempts. Returning to Merrill Field. Passing Elmendorf AFB. Ready for new jobs.
