I just wonder if someone knows what is the total weight of paint needed to paint a real 747-400 ready to be delivered.I just guess that any fancy decorations must have a some impact on flight cost, no?RakhamToshiba Satellite P4 3.4 Ghz1536 DDR RAM nVidia GeForce FXWinXP Home on the road andPIV 3.4Ghz, 1536 DDR RAM, ATI Radeon 9700 WinXP PROYoke & Pedals CH Products at home

Hehehe I have heard 8 tons from a Cathay pilot. Although it could be estimated if some 3D programers could evaluate the total surface and get figures for car painting per M2 we could approach a result. 600 lbs seems extremely low compare to over 1000lbs I needed to paint my house only outside.Rakham Toshiba Satellite P4 3.4 Ghz1536 DDR RAM nVidia GeForce FXWinXP Home on the road andPIV 3.4Ghz, 1536 DDR RAM, ATI Radeon 9700 WinXP PROYoke & Pedals CH Products at home

>Steve->>I've heard 600lbs... >It is close to what I heard. An article in the Airways magazine was saying it is a weight equivalent to 2 adults (for something like a 737).Michael J.

>Hehehe I have heard 8 tons from a Cathay pilot. He clearly had no clue. They apply a very thin layer of paint and they can do it by applying static electricity to the painted surface and getting a stronger bond this way. The paint on a typical 747 is just about 1100-1200 lbs (Steve above is correct). No, painting an aluminum has nothing to do with painting your house.Michael J.

Are we talking just paint the exterior fuselage/tail/engines, or the paint on every part of the aircraft? You could be talking alot of paint if you take into account all those brackets, extrusions, panels, parts on the B747.

Actually, it varies greatly with colour schemes (as the paint is layered). Qantas' VH-OJB Wunala Dreaming, for example, was particularly heavy.Stick-on plastic decals seem to be becoming popular... I don't know if there are any weight savings as a result though (just easier application for complex colour schemes).Cheers.Q>

I too heard 1200lb

wonder how much the stripes on say an AA 777 weigh - they probably save quite a bit with that polished livery yes? Seems that for airlines the cost can really rack up ferrying hundreds of pounds of (necessary) paint around.regards,Markhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpgXPHomeSP2/FS9.1/3.2HT/1024mb/X700pro256
