April 27, 200323 yr EGT----I think "Sporty's Pilot Shop" had it at one time....sorry I keep tossing out thier catalog. You also might want to try either of the on-line bookstores for the US airline fans magazines ("Airliner" and "Airways") might be a tad cheaper. (you ARE looking at the $45 to $50 range - who said our hobby/flying/knowledge is cheap) His series of books is very good for specific aircraft (757/767, 747-400 and the 737-300.400-500 series). It is well illustrated and very well written (NOT DRY AT ALL like some tech manuals are).He is published by University of Temecula Press in Calif. Those are the only real public points I have seen it for sale.Tim_757
April 27, 200323 yr Hi RandyThanks for jumping in but I'd appreciate it if you didn't throw my qualifications into the forum...sometimes it limits the discussion where some would consider my experience in the RW "transparent" to MSFS. It also leads to a bunch of unwanted emails in my box.... Noted Sir,[h5]Best Wishes,Randy J. April 27, 200323 yr You can always pick it up from Mike's publisher's site - http://www.utem.comLuck!P
April 28, 200323 yr Regarding that one, would anyone from the US care to step in as a middle-man? I'd love to purchase the 757/767 Checkride Manual myself, directly from the site, HOWEVER, if I do, I'll be subjected to taxes & VAT (25%). Not to mention the shipping. To compare: When I originally bought the 767PIC, I ended up paying more for the shipping & taxes than 767PIC itself costed :-eekHowever, if someone from the US could act as a middleman, and send it to me and label it as a gift (well, my 21st birthday IS coming up soon :-hah) I could avoid the import taxes.Naturally, I'll be paying for the book & shipping.
May 6, 200323 yr Tim,Was flying on Vatsim today and decided to try out the green arc method to do a VOR approach. I have programmed a VOR approach for the runway I was landing on using the actual chart, and loaded this up in the FMC. I then entered the VOR into the FIX page, and entered the inbound course radial. Disconnected the Autopilot once on a closing heading and used the positioned the Arc so it lay over the threshold.Using Randy's VFR view, flew using FD inputs down to descision height. Picked up the PAPI fine, and noticed that using this method the approach was bang on the money.Excellent technique to use. Makes a VOR DME approach nearly as easy as an ILS.:-)
May 6, 200323 yr An ex-Navy carrier pilot showed me a method of visual approaches when you have the runway in sight. Observe the "wedge" shape of the runway in front of you. If you remain on a constant glide path, the shape of the runway ("height" of the far end of the runway ABOVE the approach end of the runway, and the proportions of the shape) will remain the same, as well as the "wedge" shape. Try it and see if it works for you. This may start another chain, but he also taught me to use power to adjust the rate of descent when the approach speed is nailed.Trim and power...
May 6, 200323 yr Trim for speed, power for descent/climb rate has been the rule of thumb that has saved my arse a few times ;-)Rob.
