VNAV CLB DIR Mode

Featured Replies

DES NOW is for when ATC want you to begin the descent earlier than the TOD, begins minimum descent profile until established on the VNAV path.DES DIR allows for FLCH style descent but using VNAV.

In sum, what I see is:CLB DIR - deletes -all- restrictions and allows a 'direct' climb to CRZ ALT.DES DIR - deletes ONLY the next restriction in the descent, not all of the descent restictions planned.Clear as mud :-)

"Seems the DES DIR delete the restrictions individually in the PIC767 at each press of the DES DIR where as CLB DIR blows all restrictions away. Airline option??"Not sure, Rob. The Bulfer Big Boeing FMC Users Guide says that all restrictions are removed in climb and descent with the CDU selections. My 747-400 AOM also says this.Does anyone's manuals contradict this? I couldn't find any reference to CLB DIR in the PIC FMC manual (other than DELeting restrictions manually) The 757 and 767 MCP Alt Knob/Pushbutton (option) on the other hand deletes restrictions individually (according to the Bulfer Manual). The 747-400 is the same (according to our airline's 747-400 AOM).Cheers.Ian.

I have many manuals, but here is what I've got from an NWA 757 AOM:"When DES DIR prompt displayed@ PUSH- deletes all waypoints constraints between the current altitude and the MCP altitude. "Same goes for CLB DIR.Boeing manual says the same for both CLB and DES.

Even more interesting now with Ian and Ilan's comments. Now I wonder if the earlier observations had the MCP altitude set below the second decent altitude restriction. Perhaps we need another flight or two to find out if PIC does work the way the AOM's detail it.Mike

Gentlemen,My notes indicate the same. CLB DIR when pushed deletes all waypoint altitude constraints between the airplane altitude and the MCP altitude.Best Regards,

Nice reply!

Anyone try it yet?

I did. It works great!

Hi guys,Finally I have experienced this behaviour too:EHAM Approach told me to c/m FL090 while I was flying at 3000ft and had a FL60 restriction at the first waypoint.I went to the VNAV page of my FMC, hit the CLB DIR button (I have a hardware FMC..), and it was very good to see my aircraft continue climbing through FL060. Great! Regards,Nicowww.nicokaan.nl
