What could I expect from this vid card?

Featured Replies

Currently I have a P3/1000 with 512 meg RAM--and a Geforce2Mx with 32 meg vid card.I am reasonably happy with the way it performs -- but the vid card was always a budget match to a reasonable processor when I first built the machine.I can't justify a complete new machine yet -- but I can get a Geforce4 TI4200 -128 meg card at a reasonable price. What kind of impact on my viewing experience could I expect from this vid card upgrade?? I know that FS2002 is CPU bound -- but there is a considerable difference between these 2 cards -- so I should be able to see 'some" onscreen difference. Thanks Barry

I went through the same upgrade.. result:- better quality graphics, further range of viewable terrain- 1280x960x32 resolution at same framerates as 1024x768x16 before..- a card that I could continue to use, even after my next processor upgrade..

Yes, I think you will see some difference. You MAY even gain in performance. I moved up from a 32mg card to a 64 mg card and found my sims (both Fly!2 and FS2K2) ran more smoothly. I have just recently upgraded from the 64 mg card to a 256 mg card. I didn't gain but maybe 1 to 2 fps but the colors seem more vibrant and the textures are definitely crisper, clearer, "cleaner" looking.I would highly recommend if you're going to move up to a 128 mg card, to get one of the upper-end versions (no MX) I believe you'll be more satisfied with your new GEF4 Ti card than with your MX card.Good luck.-Lindy :-wave

Hi Barry,I made the same upgrade as you propose, but my new card has 64mb.I agree with the other responders.I have the same computer specs as you and I think I may have replied to one of your posts before (I remember the system!).The only suggestion I have is to check further as to 128 or 64 mb. I'm not an expert, but I've read that the 64mb cards are actually faster than the 128 mb cards. As a matter of fact, Gainward even says so on their 64mb card's box. The upgrade is well worth it.Good luck.Howard
