Drastic wind shifts

Featured Replies

This is something I have problem with TO its very annoying espcilly over the Atlantic ocean becuse of the bad weather stations over there sometimes I get big altitude diffrences and speed changes so I have to decent to pick up speed. I wish there was a way to fix this I would love to hear from HIFISIM about this issue.Best regards:Alexander

So its in the works to fix this issue? just making certain :(.Best regards:Alexander

I'm not sure that I fully understand this TAT stuff but I can I assume that the drastic wind changes I observed are related to the issues canvassed in that thread? My problems certainly occurred in the same part of the North Atlantic and things seemed to stabilise as the flight progressed further east.I usually take time out on these long haul flights and leave things to the "FO" so to speak. But with these weather artefacts not being in the "cockpit" pretty well full-time can have drastic consequences.Bruceb

All,Wind smoothing is actually a different issue than the TAT processing. This is an FS issue, not an ASV issue. The best way to solve this is to own the registered version of FSUIPC. Wonderful program and worth the money for this feature alone. Go to the tab for wind smoothing. There are three boxes on top of each other the top box should be 0 the middle box 5 and the last box 8. This tells FS to apply 1 kt of wind change every 5 seconds opposed to an immediate shift. I promise you, this will solve the wind shift issues and cause much smoother transtions.Like I said, FS issue, not ASV. Gotta go land :)Happy flying,-Paul

>Wind smoothing is actually a different issue than the TAT>processing. This is an FS issue, not an ASV issue. I am not sure why Jim invoked the TAT thread. Not sure what wind smoothing has to do with SAT smoothing. If there is a link I don't see it. And I am not sure whether one can say that one is an FS issue or ASV issue. As far as I can see it both are FS issues therefore some clever programming must be invented to find a way around BOTH problems. We know that both wind and temperature could swing in real life in upper layers of atmosphere but this would not happen in seconds allowing aircraft sufficient time to adjust.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg

I take it then this issue will not be addressed within ASV. Not really enthused by the idea of having to pay for the registered FSUIPC to fix this problem as I reckon I have already paid for FSUIPC indirectly through the number of payware addons purchased.Bruceb

Hey Bruce,FSUIPC is worth it just for this feature alone. Unfortunately, the wind shifts are something you see with or without ASV so you would need FSUIPC to solve it even with default weather.Another way of thinking of it is that you have gotten so much use out of FSUIPC already you may as well pay for it to help Pete Dowson the author out. I mean every almost every single add-on requires it so lets show Pete some support :) Seriously though, this one featuire makes it worth it and then the other features are bonus. Unless ASV adds a force wind smoothing with the force TAT smoothing, I think the fix for wind smoothing will stay in FSUIPCJust my .02, I am clueless LOL,-Paul BTW, the correct settings for wind smoothing for FSUIPC are in this thread up above in one of my other posts. 0 5 8 are the magic numbers :)

Hi All,There is wind smoothing in FSUIPC and ASV. If you want to see this NOT work then remove the FSUIPC.dll and use default Real Weather. Take up your new super-duper planes and watch them get blown right out of the sky by the immediate wind shifts. That was the situation with FS04 right out of the tin/box/cardboard envelope. Anyone remember that???!!!Then the weather guys (one in particular) got together with Pete and said "We have a problem! Wind shifts are blowing planes right out of the sky, causing overspeeds, and making planes jump around like crazy." So Pete and the weather guys (the same one in particular)worked and worked and worked until WIND SMOOTHING was added to ALL versions of FSUIPC. So then a default setting needed to be programed for AAAALLLLLLL the freeware versions. So Pete and the weather guys (one again in particular, the same one) develop a test version that sets WIND SMOOTHING at 5 degrees per sec. Because the one weather guy knows I use the freeware version of FSUIPC I am in on the testing phase. And what do you know? All those nasty wind shifts go bye-bye and we have a seamingly stable situation. So since that release, so very long ago, WIND SMOOTHING has been a part of FSUIPC. The default setting is still 5 degrees/sec. You should not be seeing immediate 25, 45, 60, 90, or 180 degree wind shifts in a blink of an eye.The only way to monitor this is by using the Shift/Z readout in FS. Please don't say my XYZ guage is showing shifts, because sometimes there is so much lag time that it looks like drastic shifts, but really there is not. A small example is AR; even with 1 minute updates, it can look like that wind is just blowing all over the place. ASV and FSUIPC are just responsible for getting data INTO FS04. After that, the data and how it is used is not under our control. Please ALL don't take this post the wrong way! I am not putting down or downplaying anyone's problems. If you feel that you are experiencing drastic wind shifts beyond 5 deg/sec please let us know. Nothing is perfect yet and we will continue to help any situation we can to make things better for you.Sometimes after a long day with 100+ ninth graders you feel and act a little crazy. Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg

If I had never purchased any payware addons that pass on a slice of the action to Peter Dowson I could go along with your donation argument. However, as pointed out above, that is not the case. It seems to me registered FSUIPC users are paying again for the privilege every time they purchase an addon (such as ASV) that requires FSUIPC. My understanding was that this wind shift problem was solved some time ago by AS4.5/ASV (it was certainly marketed that way) with no suggestion that a registered copy of FSUIPC was required. Apparently this assumption on my part is no longer valid.Bruceb

I'm currently flying across the North Atlantic in my brand new PMDG United Airlines 747 and I am getting drastic wind shifts like from 8 knots to 120 plus within a few seconds. I had thought these were a thing of the past. Default ASV settings apart from cloud layers which set at 3.Metar: $227 050900Z 25005KT 15SM FEW030 BKN250 11/10 A3014 RMK SC1CI2 SLP208 RMK AUTOGEN ASVThis hasn't changed for some time but the winds keep changing although they have settled down in the last minute or so.Any suggestions appreciated.ASV build 325Bruceb

No offence but i still feel its a weather issue and don't feel the fsuipc is the answer to something i wish the wx program can fix (should fix)!

Just adding my $.02 to this contentious subject...Are we talking about wind shifts in that the wind changes direction?Or are we talking about wind shifts in that the wind changes speed?Perhaps the reason that this issue is going in circles in this thread is that some of you are talking about the former, where others are talking about the latter, but everyone thinks everyone else is talking about the same thing? To me, these are two different issues.I understand that FSUIPC smooths changes in wind direction. But does it also smooth changes in wind speed? If not, perhaps that is the issue Bruceb (and others) are having a problem with. And, given the paucity of WX stations in mid-Atlantic (and I suspect mid-Pacific too,) perhaps it is not unreasonable to see such sudden changes in wind speed if nothing is smoothing wind speed changes. The question then becomes, can anything be done about sudden changes in wind speed?Best regards,...jim
