June 29, 200619 yr Hi Mace,Some just like to lighten the load as much as possible on the FS machine. Others like the second screen for stuff like maps, ASv6, FS Flight Keeper.Yes, Radar Contact can be run that way too.If you really don't have much, or need the second screen then it's probably not worth it.Heck, I am with 4 screens and could go to 5 using my second video out port and Maxi Vista with 2 laptops! I attempted an upgrade to the current file last night and found myself having to restore the MODULES folder. *&%$ that! until a new release is available for upgrade, then I'll go through the agravation. :-shyMy RAID 0 system is running just fine with the last 'final' verison I believe it is 3.?)P.S. - Why do you want ACARS running? And why are you sold on FSC? And here's another 'glasses up' to Al for the WideFS post! :-beerchug Ron_CYEGhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_pf.jpg
July 2, 200619 yr Hi Ron,I want ACARS because my VA uses it. I like FSC for many reasons. To me it's similar to FSNAV (Which I also own) but I like the fact that I can run it outside of FS9, which I can't do with FSNAV. It also shows all the AI traffic, which FSNAV doesn't do. Other than that, I paid for it so I want to use it lol.I have no idea what I'm doing and I have a feeling I'll be making my situation worse :).. but I've read a few things about using FSWIDE to offload some work from the main PC, especially ASV and SB. Don't know if I'll be successful but a search of the forums brought me here so I'm going to give it a try.But first I have to run to the local Office Max and get one of those little Keyboard DIN to PS/2 adaptors since I didn't pay attention when I took this scrap :)Can you sense a lot of trouble coming for me :)?My wife says "It works leave it alone".. lol she just doesn't understand Jeff
July 2, 200619 yr >My wife says "It works leave it alone".. lol she just doesn't>understand Jeff:You're wife is VERY wise.My wife said the same thing last night, AFTER I managed to screw things up, which also ran in contradiction to my own better judgement of waiting for the current release to move beyond BETA. Doh! *:-*However, since you're just getting into WideFS and it's huge bonuses and an incredibly good reason to register the FSUIPC product, the sweat and tears of getting it setup is diminished if you follow the logic. Most important? Get the pathing right and I'd suggest stick with using TCPIP addressing before moving onto the newer protocol.Need I say, 'make a solid FS9 backup first!' If you Ghost the drive you can always restore individual folders if need be, i.e. the 'MODULES' folder which is FSUIPC home on the FS9 PC. The WideFS client is handled by WideFS.exe, along with it's WifeFS.INI which couples with the FSUIPC.INI on the server PC.Good luck, but don't miss dinner or your wife will most definately NOT be amused, especially when she has already told you: "If it ain't 'borken', why play with it?" They like saying that. :-coolRon_CYEGhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_pf.jpg
July 3, 200619 yr Well I'm stuck at the beginning lol. I followed all the instructions as best as possible, but I simply cannot browse into the Program Files directory from either PC (both have drives mapped correctly and I can browse to other folders). Both machines have Windows XP. Both have administrator accounts with the same name. Other than this I'm stumped.I didn't want to go ahead and install if I could not get into either directories.I browse to the main folder (For example C root mapped), but when I try to browse into Program Files I get "Access Denied". I've double checked settings, the entire root of C is shared. I even tried sharing the Program files but it tells me "Tabs are disabled because the system uses these files"Any advice?Jeff

I put FS9 in it's own folder, in my case, F:fS9. I can then Ghost that drive to an external hard drive, or to another system drive. If you're using the latest version, you need to setup Basic Network sharing BEFORE even bothering getting into WideServer and WideClient setup. You MUST be able to path your FS9 directory, and from the FS9 PC, be able to path the CLIENT directory where you're running WideFSClient. You're starting from scratch so your FSCLIENT and FSSERVER *.INI files will be virgins and will need some editing. But 'hit the docs' first, AFTER you've got system networking whipped.I also suggested you use TCIP, but Peter Dowson recommends using naming if your using a version 3.5 or above. See below:"Really, for an all WinXP setup, the best and most flexible way is to specify nothing at all in the Wideclient INI files (no protocol, no server details), and just use ProtocolPreferred in the Server's INI to select TCP, SPX or UDP. I use UDP throughout these days, but configuring it as I say allows you to change over just by changing that one Server parameter". Source: Peter DowsonI'd suggest you get the networking issues solved before getting into the documents of FSUIPC.Ron_CYEGhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_pf.jpg
July 3, 200619 yr Thanks Ron,I have no problems running WideFS server or client. I can run WideClient and it connects to WideFS Server without problems. That part of the networking is just fine.THe problem I have is navigating into the Program Files folder with the entire C drive shared (I see it on the network).I am still not sure I understand. In the printout from a previous post, I thought I read that he shared his C:, which to me is the entire C drive.I don't own Ghost, so I don't think I can ghost my FS9 anywhere. All of my software is in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFS9" or whatever the default is.. Are you saying I can't keep that orginal location? Do I have to re-install FS9?I will dig into the docs more. Thanks again for your assistance.Once again, it's not WideFS that I'm having issues with. It works fine.Jeff
July 3, 200619 yr Hi Jeff,No, do not move FS04. Share your FS04 folder and your Application Data folder.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 3, 200619 yr >I don't own Ghost, so I don't think I can ghost my FS9>anywhere.Jeff:Ghost is a 'life saver'. I have owned it for years, in particular v3.00 which was released as Symantec got their hands on it. They have it locked to Norton/Symantec as a part of their SystemWorks utils in ver 5.0. If you can find a version 3.0 of Ghost that's the one you want (probably about 60.00US. Otherwise try www.genie-soft.com for their entry in the backup market, ver 7. It will at least allow you to backup/restore your critical stuff.>All of my software is in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft>GamesFS9" or whatever the default is.. Are you saying I can't>keep that orginal location? Do I have to re-install FS9?It's a bad idea to cram everyting onto C: Why? Think of the size of your Swapfile! Second, C: is the primary target for Spyware, Trojans, etc. Keep C: to your System files only, but notice that FS9.CFG and routes are kept there). Third, how big do you want your C: drive to get? If you're installing everything there, what happens if the C: drive dies and you have no restoreable backup? Life becomes VERY complicated after that, especially if all your registration data goes with it! So what I'd suggest you do is put FS9 anywhere BUT C:. Ideally put it on a drive/folder you can dedicate to FS9. That gives you a way of imaging the drive/subdir (again, ideally) to an external storage drive like ADS. Then, with the right software, like Ghost or GBM Pro - which has OpenFile capabilities - you can restore as much, or as little, as you want.P.S. A big caution on GBM. I've been working with their support team for two months on the inability of their new OpenFileManager software which has changed from OFM to FAM open file software. For some reason on mine it kills FS9 performance. They, apparently, are still looking at 'why'. That doesn't mean it will happen to others, but maybe I'm the only one who has the problem. But I doubt it. Ron_CYEGhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_pf.jpg
July 4, 200619 yr Jeff,What is your progress now ? Did you manage to get it working ?Follow Jim's advice: just share FS9 and the Application Data from Doc & Settings/"PC name".After I did that I needed still to STOP the firewall and restart it on both machines. Stopping the PCs and restart them wasn't sufficient. It took me about 10 days to have ASV, FlightKeeper and RCV4 working. The time spend on each product diminished at each new installation. The biggest work is with the first soft (ASV in my case).I ended the installation two days ago so everything is still fresh in my memory (good memory but it stays there only 5 minutes !!).You can contact me directly or better through this forum if you wish.We could also dialog through MSN if you are equipped with headphone and microphone. But I live in Belgium and if you are living in the USA there is 6 to 9 hours time difference (1 PM East Coast = 7 PM in Europe). I am retired so no office hours in my way. July 4, 200619 yr Thanks Roger and Ron,Well, let's just say I've got some things working lol.I am able to use FlightSim Commander but since I have this pc in a different room, it is sort of silly lol..WideFS works no problems.ActiveSky, well, it worked the first time, but I could not run ActiveSkyGraphics, some type of initialization error. So then I re-installed AS on my server PC (so now I had a copy on both PCs). Now AS doesn't work anymore on the client pc.Flight Deck Companion should work but my son took my mouse (I had borrowed it from him lol) so I am trying to ALT TAB my way through menus and I can't quite get it.I'm trying my VA's ACARS (Delta Virtual) today to see if it will work.Today, if there are any stores open, I will buy a cheap mouse, a long network cable, and move the PC into the same room as this PC.. So.. in summary. AS is the only thing that I'm having trouble with.. I'll be looking at it somewhat today, but my wife needs me to fix a broken pump in our pond... Thanks again!Roger I have MSN my username is jeffscharpf, I have mic, have never used MSN with a mic. Also, I first need to move that other PC into this room.. But thanks very much for the offer!I'll keep you updated!Jeff

It's easier on the heart! :-lolGood Luck!Ron_CYEGhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_pf.jpg
July 5, 200619 yr Jeff,Unfortunately I don't use ActiveSky Graphics. That said I have no problems with ASV but it took me 4 or 5 days to have it work. Not because ASV is difficult but it was the first application I installed with WideFS. So small problems due to inexperienced guy with new features I never used and some misteries from PCs made it a slow process. The following softwares were quicker to install still that I have a strange problem with FlightKeeper. So just keep asking questions. That is the way I solved my problems plus lot of research.Roger Roger See my specs in my profile
July 5, 200619 yr Thanks again to both of you.Ok I think I got everything working!I didn't change anything on my Flight Sim PC other than to share the FS9 folder, and the "Application Data" folder. Here's a summary, after days of struggling.WideFS: Worked as designed the first time (Nothing to test other than seeing the "connected" message.FSCommander: Worked right away. I just had to make sure, when it could not find the FS9 folders, that I pointed to the mapped folders.Flight Deck Companion: Worked fine. No issues.Active Sky. Works like a charm now. Not sure what clouds it's choosing, since ASG doesn't run, but I don't care anymore because it looks good!Active Sky Graphics: Doesn't work. Simply won't run on the remote machine. Not sure if I even need this, as my clouds look just fine. Also, I re-installed both of these on my server PC. Not sure if that would help or not.Delta Virtual ACARS: Haven't tested it yet.Squawkbox: Haven't tested it yet, but the install asked for two installations. After all this, I realized that my biggest problem is that the second PC I have, well, let's just say it's not quite up to par lol. With only 64M RAM, it REALLY struggles with all these programs open. But I'm not looking for performance on this machine so I can live with it.Thanks again for all the support. I'll keep you up to date on the other programs.Jeff
