March 30, 200521 yr Hello All:Am looking at a purchase I made and am wondering whether I should return it before I open the boxes. A little background:I have been running a Barton 2500+ @2.17 for two years and it has been my best dollar/performance CPU I have ever had. I saw a dual channel kit of 3200 HyperX on sale for $100 (2X512), so I jumped on it and tried to run the barton @ 2.2, but no go! Well, I decided to move up to an A64, after all, it has been two years, but now I hear conflicting stories about the S939 I bought with the Gigabyte K8N. First of all, my dealer suggested this combo for future upgrades, but now I see on Gigabyte's website that the the K8NSN may not run 90nm chips. They say they are testing. I mean, maybe I should take this back while it's still returnable and just get an S754 Newcastle 3400 and a Lanparty or Asus K8N-E, ($50 less)? I am stuck with AGP for awhile, since I got a video card not long ago. I am not looking at overclocking anymore, since my 2500+ failure.K
March 30, 200521 yr Well I would go for the S754 newcastle though Clawhammer is of course better. Best 754 mainboard outthere is probably Shuttle AN51R. I replaced my Shuttle AN50R with a DFI Lanparty UT and to my big surprise my old Shuttle AN50R really kills the DFI in term of overclockability and stability :(So am a bit of a Shuttle a really excited user lol.
April 1, 200521 yr Author Thanks: That is what I did. If the AGP 939 boards could handle 90nm, well, then I would have stuck with it. I got an Asus MB, I didn't read your post in time, my dealer said the Lanparty was more money for overclocking, and now that I am paying $220+ for my CPUs I'm not overclocking anymore. I like it, I got 22,000 in 2001SE. I'll check it out further. K
April 1, 200521 yr I've had a couple issues with my MSI K8N Neo2 platinum, but all in all it is working well. Were I to upgrade today, though, I would go PCI-e and maybe ebay my ATI 9600 XT AGP card. I'm kind of partial to ASUS and would take a look at their new SLi board.scott s..http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/110942.jpg
April 1, 200521 yr Scott,Was one of the issues the Core Voltage? 2.480v seems awfully high unless it's one of the motherboards which incorrectly reports its status. Using the same processor, mine remains at 1.472v but on a different MB.Jim
April 3, 200521 yr 939 for sure. The winchester core runs much cooler than any of the previous versions, providing you don't mind only going upto the 3500+ that is.If you want higher, then you will have to stick with the 754.Glenn Glenn Ryzen 3700X, X570 Pro Wifi, 32GB 3600mhz RAM, Nvidia Titan Xp "Galactic Empire", RM750x PSU, H700 case, 2x NVMe M2 SSD, 1x SATA SSD
