HDTV - death of the PC monitor?

Featured Replies

Is anyone running or considering running FS through a HDTV? These new 26-27" WXGA sets have fairly good resolution, good built-in sound, and prices are favourable compared to widescreen monitors and projectors. Is WXGA resolution supported in fs2004?Neil

I bought a 32 inch Samsung R328W 32 inch LCD 2 days ago. I have been fooling around with various settings ect trying to dial it in for fs9.Im not sure if this is what you are asking about but if it is let me know and I will give you my honest opinion and observations.

No. HDTV's are not as good as computer monitors when it comes to resolution. Computer monitors are much much higher. Big TVs like these HDTV's may be big.. but their resolution is like a basic monitor's resoulution.I have seen few Flight school simulators running PFC/ELITE sims use HDTVs.Manny

your opinion on the 32" would be appreciated! Obviously the resolution is poorer than a traditional monitor - but I'm thinking in principle this will be fine for light home/game use....1330x768...Neil.

First off. Im coming from a 21 inch flat screen CRT running the 1600+ resos. Most settings I could get away with I maxxed out so I had pretty awesome graphics. BYW I have 2 computers both running 3500+ AMD, one has a 6800gt oc, the other a 7800gt 512.That said, my initial reaction other than the oh my god this thing is huge is the same I had initially when playing a gane on my PC then going to the Playstation 2 port. Yuucckk. But just as quickly as you get accustomed to moving to a larger screen, the graphics grow on you.I had headaches and vertigo from both the lower rez, lower refresh rates and the size for about a day.Since changing some settings and spending alot of time staring at the 32 inch screen, I no longer have those problems. My crt came highly rec by other flight simmers. It has a max rez of 1360x769 32bit at a max refresh rate of 60. Bottom line is planes of high quality, your PMDG,PSS,Carendo, ect that looked awesome are going to look great. Planes that do not have as detailed textures that looked good look decent. The biggest problem is night textures. The crt is a bright display and I have yet to find settings to eliminate that white glow coming off the screen in total darkness. Most cockpits liek the PMDGS and level D ect look great but some are really hard to see. The worst is making out anything outside the windows. Over brightly lit cities and on approach to a runway, you can pretty easily see but again that white "fog" cuts details way down.IMO-If you are looking for crisp, clean details where quality makes all the difference, stay with a crt or flat screen monitor.BUT,If you wanna go for total immersion where doing rolls will make you want to puke, full size cockpits with actual sized gauges and seeing things you have never noticed before, going big is your ticket.Just figure out the best LCD you can afford then spend a little extra. Some I understand just are not cut out for it and would be a waste of ALOT of money. BTY- My Samsung as pc ready and all I had to do is plug it up into my graphics card.

Edit- "My CRT came highly rec" .... I meant LCD.....

I'm running FS on my ViewSonic N3250W at 1360x768 32 bit resolution. The program looks and runs great. The resolution is excellent for FS9 although not as high as some monitors, but I do have the advantage of a great HDTV programing with my ATI HDTV card which also does great DVR.With my Track IR4 setup, the immersion factor is unbelievable on this 32" screen.Pete S.

The biggest improvement I noticed is simply the amount of real estate you can see. Before on my 21, I was staring at a screen full of gauges with a glimpse of the outside world. Now when you have a foot or so of terrain on 3 sides you really get the feel of movement. Not to mention you can actually see the details. I can now even navigate and regonize where Im at due to the increased terrain area. The cockpits are also more beleivable. The f-104 now feels like a real cockpit as the gauges are full size.Just flew a 500 miler with the level d and I still have a grin on my face...... Well at least until I get the bill for this thing. hA

I though that 32" would be too blocky compared to 26-27" - how far away from the screen do you sit and what is your angle of view? I wondering how much that immersion factor would be degraded on the 26".informative post btw!Neil.

I considered that possibilty HARD while looking at the screens. But I learned from my early days of simming how quickly I get accustomed to a larger screen and wished I would have gone bigger. I had made up my mind to get the smaller one, 28 I think, but just a quickly decided that if I was going to go big , GO BIG.26-27 would probably be the sweet spot for your basic flying setup. I have a older Thunderseat which came out years ago. Its a hollow plastic thick seat with a sub woofer in the bottom. On each side are arm rest which hold your throttle/stick. My LCD sits on a tv stand that brings the monitor abouteye level mid screen. I then sit it on a 1 foot wide board thats about 3 feet long. I sit my keyboard on the end and can slide the board in and out from under the lcd to adjust my distance.Yes, I had to move back probably 3 feet or so. Whats wild is that I am so accustomed to having to lean forward to see gauge details, I still do it out of habit even though its not a problem at all.

Bigger is not better. I have a 23" LCD panel for my computer and a 50" HDTV ... The TV while being *bigger* physically can not hold a candle to the 23" which runs at 1920x1200 from a detail quality level. 1080i is nice, but it's not *that* nice.Ray

I'm not good on change, that being said, I don't like the idea of going backwards as far as sharpness and clarity goes. I have a .22 grille pitch CRT and run it at 1600x using 4xAA/16xAF. Anything less will be going backwards. If I could get it to run adequately at 2048 x 1536 as is possible on this CRT, I would! Doesn't run bad per se, but can squeeze down performance a bit much.Cheers

Well I don't agree! I have a 19" LCD next to the 32". True the 19" has a higher resolution, but the size of the bigger LCD more than makes up for it. The resolution that I fly on is plenty good! I would never go back to a smaller monitor for my FS.Pete S.
