March 13, 200620 yr I received my Dell 24" LCD monitor today. First thing to try was FS9 ....I was totally blown away with the quality of the graphics running at 1920x1200. Widesreen makes the experience that much better. The stretching in 2D mode is acceptable. Using Tracker Pro in VC mode I thought I was flying. (much cheaper than the real thing) Anyway if you get this effect out of FS9 using a wide screen imagine FSX.Andrew
March 13, 200620 yr You don't have to live with the stretched 2D views either.Search on this topic. There are solutions for that issue as well. Using widescreen monitor without any compromise.Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 14, 200620 yr Hi, is this the 2405FPW model? Look sweet, but I can't justify that price! OMG! :(
March 14, 200620 yr it was on sale for a while at 800, laughing at me, but now its back to over a grand. I paid 600 for my 21 sony trinitor like 6 years ago which is now going bad. The price wasnt too bad at 800 but not at over a thousand!
March 16, 200620 yr Hi,I just got my 2405FPW from Dell Outlet for $748. The graphics are excellent! I did find the stretched gauges on the 2D panels to be a minor issue since they are not that noticable to me anyway.Airbus Al Kaupa Digital Storm purchased 8/17/2011; Win7x64: Asus P8P67 Deluxe; Intel i7 2600K@3,9 GHZ; nVidia GTX 560Ti; 8GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Dominator; Power Corsair HX 750W; Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD; 300GB WD VelociRaptor; 1TB Seagate.
March 18, 200620 yr Moderator Hi Andrew,This is my dream monitor having just received Best Buy in PC Pro (UK). Can you tell me what your frame rates are running at 1920*1200 please? Is your system sufficiently fast to be able to run as such a high res?I was going to hold off buying it until I upgrade my 9800Pro as I doubt it has the muscle to drive such a resolution. Thanks, Ray (Cheshire, England). March 19, 200620 yr Author No problem with frame rate. Running 1920x1200 depending which aircraft I am getting around 25-30 fps. I am running UT, GE and Genesis. It is better that you expect. The 2d cockpit is not that bad. I run mostly in VC with the panels on the 2nd monitor. Its as real as it gets.I do have a reasonable system. P4 3.6mhz ATI800XT (540/1100) 2G 500mhz DDRRegards,Andrew
March 19, 200620 yr Moderator Hi Andrew,Thanks for your reply. Rather than a reasonable system I would say yours is near state-of-the-art :-)As I use Project Magenta software I don't need to display either a 2D or virtual panel. Instead I have a full forward view with PM software running on a second PC via WideFS.I don't think my 9800 Pro is up to the job but once I upgrade to a new system when FSX comes out that is when I'll go for the new monitor.Thanks. March 19, 200620 yr My natural tendency is to go for the larger of two models. I would have bought a 2405FPW, if the price were right. However, the smaller one, 2005FPW, is priced very well. I am amazed and delighted with mine. Of course, I am a guy who has used a laptop with 15" screen his whole simming life, and just about anything would be better. I will be unplugging from the Inspiron 8200 and plugging into a powerful new home brew rig in a few days, and will probably be amazed all over again.Anyway, the wide screen is great, the resolutions are fine with the proper horsepower, and the prices really are reasonable now. The 2405FPW is really nice, but so is the smaller one, and it can be had for less than many 4:3 screens. It is large enough to keep moving away from, and small enough to fit into a tight desk setup.Neither one of them does anything for the Feng Shui, though.
March 19, 200620 yr Moderator Hi Steve,Here in England the price difference between the two is 300 pounds (around 500 US dollars) - quite a difference. I won't be buying until the end of 2006 and hopefully the 24" will have come down in price. As I currently use a 18" TFT I wouldn't want to go to a 20" widescreen as I think it would be smaller vertically. It's all relative of course - notebook users like yourself would be happy with either of the Dells.A good TFT will last many years so I think I'll use that as an excuse to go for the 24" ;-)I'm sure the larger will have a positive effect on my Feng Shui :-hahCheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). March 20, 200620 yr Ray: It is all relative, as you say. If I were used to an 18" monitor, I wouldn't be so thrilled with the small Dell wide screen, either. There will probably come a day when I talk myself into a much bigger screen, too. Happy Simming from an old Lakenheath High grad
