Windows Vista being a pain on CH Flight Yoke and Pedals

Featured Replies

Hey, all.I am hoping to get an answer here as to is anyone else has been able to make the CH Flight Yoke and pedals work on Vista. The Setup works great on my Windows XP install, but my Vista doesnt seem to be able to even detect they are there.Any ideas? FYI I checked the CH site, but they have no resources available for Vista yet -- hoping a user has found a fix somewhere, as my FS looks and works GREAT in Vista -- I just now need controllers to do something besides crash the plane because of keyboard controlling LOL.Chris

Chris,Pardon me for asking but, when did Vista become available to the public? The last news I read is that, it won't be available till the end of this year or have I missed something? If, perchance you have obtained a 'Beta' copy I really don't see why your asking for a fix for software not finished yet?

Sir ,I would advise you not to suggest things until you checked and verified that what you claim it ture.As a matter of fact vista is avilable for the public to test and you can download it off microsoft's main site.

Hey there, Dave. :-)You are indeed correct that the release is not due out until next year. The version to which "Ipaq_man" (sorry didnt catch a name for his post) refers to is the beta version, of which you have to actually get through the microsoft web site. The version I have is licensed for 10 computers, which my roommate and i, for business purposes, acquired through Microsoft directly. However, like all of the beta copies, it will expire in july, 2007 unless we purchase the final version key, which will not be released until the product is indeed sold in retail stores.I fixed the CH Flight yoke issue -- I felt silly. i did so much cramming around and then did what every scientist and techie in the world would have thought of first -- I unplugged the cables, waited a minute, and plugged them back in.In forums such as this there are many users who also beta, and thus many users may have found work-arounds that make things tick that even the developers have not thought of yet. That is why i posted asking for what i did -- i guess more politically correct to be called a "work-around" as opposed to "fix".The good news is FS works beautiful in Vista. The bad news is, many add-ons do not. One such example is Active camera Pro. When you reinstall Active camera, it generates a registration code, which you use to send to get activated with a unique authorization key that matches that registration code. in XP this works great, but in Vista, it never generates the code, so I cannot register my Active camera in Vista. The main problems are for products that need activation - especially Flight1 wrappers -- they don't play too well.OH, and if anyone encounters issues with FS9.1, if you have the original FS without the patch, for some reason it works beautifully WITHOUT the patch. Once I install 9.1, it for some reason makes the Flight Lessons and other special features of FS inaccessable. **shrugs**As i said above, though, until further development occurs, this will make a great backup copy of FS for flight lessons, leaving my XP copy to the heavy add-ons and airliners and scenery (oh my!) LOL.Thus i have gone to a two-fold simulator. My XP version will be for my Virtual Airline and Scenic flights. The Vista version will stay a clean install of FS and have no other purpose but for me to go back and review flight lessons once in a while. For those that are interested, I will say that there should soon be (there already is for subscribers of tech-net) a beta copy of non other than FS X. If you are interested in going through Tech-net, I hope ya have cash to spend (I dont) - the "subscription" costs 500 bucks, but on the bright side is any software you beta through them also comes with the final license in the end. Gee, ya think why? I am sure the cost is MORE than covered by such a huge price for a membership.

in other words it's a beta version. Can't expect everything to work perfectly in those.

>in other words it's a beta version. Can't expect everything>to work perfectly in those.Precisely -- whic is why I asked here instead of writing to the dvelpers for questions. Users can still help users with issues a lot in these cases. In my case i found the issue i was having, and even posted the answer in my post below so that others may benefit.

>Sir ,>>I would advise you not to suggest things until you checked and>verified that what you claim it ture.Oh, what did I suggest then?

Thanks for the report. Are you running as a limited user with UAC enabled? If so, are you seeing any problems with FS9 or addons needing admin rights?scott s..

I'll have to check with my roommate as he is the tech junkie on Vista and he assisted me setting up the system, but this is listed in the lower right corner as "Evaluation Copy" Build 53 something (I am logged onto XP at the moment). The beta is available here:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/I will confirm that YES one of the major issues are the admin rights. I installed FS9 and it worked beautifully. Once I applied the 9.1 patch, it freaked out about admin rights. I managed to edit the properties of the EXE file to make it "assigned" to my user account and then it booted in, then it freaked out whenever i clicked on certain menu items such as "Flight Lessons", "Getting Started", "Select a Flight" or "Century of Flight". in fact the only menu items i could access were "Settings" and "Create a Flight" -- enough to use the sim, but I am a student pilot and constantly reviewing on the lessons, so i reverted back to 9.0Also, for users who DO want to keep XP on their machine as a double-OS, watch out, because Vista uses a new type of boot sector code and you literally have to manually re-write the boot sector in the CMD panel (while in either OS recovery panel) back to handling the old boot sector. XP will NOT recognize the new boot secotr and if you try to reinstall XP it will corrupt the Vista code as well, rendering a nice little DOS startup warning - "ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM" and your computer halts. The following is via information I found last night on this subject:1. Install the previous version of Windows (yes, this is assuming Vista is already on the machine).2. Log onto the OLDER operating system and restore the latest boot manager by running the following command from the run dialog box (fixntfs.exe will be in the boot directory of the active partition which is usually C: Drive).C:bootfixntfs /lh3. Create a BCD (Boot Configuration Data) entry for the older operating system by specifying the following:bcdedit.exe is located in the WindowsSystem32 directory of the Windows Vista partition. To access bcdedit.exe from within Windows XP you need to use the Command Prompt (DOS Window) and point to bcdedit.exe.Description is the description of the new entry for the older operating system.bcdedit /create {legacy} /d "Description"bcdedit /set {legacy} device bootbcdedit /set {legacy} path ntldrbcdedit /displayorder {legacy} /addlast4. restart the computer in order for the changes to take effect.NOTE: if you are NOT an advanced user and are unfamiliar with bcdedit, DO NOT RISK THIS! I copied this info from another page and my roommate assisted me in doing this - so I will not even try to answer any questions here on this subject. I am just posting this copied information for the benefit of advanced FS users who are familiar with bcdedit.

You mention the disadvantages/problems with Vista.Have you identified any advantages in relation to FS9?

Gerry Howard

Only one so far -- the graphics - even though I am using the same video card and the same display settings - seem to be crisper. This makes me even more excited to see what FS X will be like with such an engine.Other then that, however, all of my other advantages seem to be with XP.Bear in mind, however, that these are early beta versions of Vista, and it is hoped that this balance will change in Vista's favor. Also, it will not be Vista's job at all to make certain things work with it. The add-on issues I mentioned above, for instance, are supposed to be expected with ANY Operating system. Once Vista is out in 2007, it will then be a decision of each add-on developer as to if they even wish to make their installers work with the registry of Vista (that is the issue in cases such as Active Camera, where the registration process makes a key based on your computer -- but the current installer does not recognize Vista, thus has issues here). For add-ons that do NOT require such a set-up (such as my aircraft by carenado) there are no issues at all. The installer is the point-and click type installer, having nothing to do with activation of any sort, and my PSS Aircraft (besides the 777) are able to be backed up and moved straight over. They seem to work great. My 777 is the just Flight CD-ROM version and i have not even tried it yet.Another issue came up last night with my Vista, however, NOT related to FS and I may end up uninstalling it for now anyway, but those were my test results so far before the other issue came up (which was related to my Adobe and macromedia software). So for the moment all of my FS experience is going back to XP :-)Vista looks like it is going to be a SWEET OS. It's just a matter now of waiting for 3rd party developers to adapt their security in their installers and programs (ESPECIALLY macromedia and Adobe) to work with Vista.

If I'm not mistaken (haven't beta'd Vista yet), doesn't it come with IE7 integrated? Weren't there numerous threads/issues about using IE7 and FS9 and that a single dll file had to be replaced or deleted in FS9? Thinking outloud, this might have something to do with your issues and perhaps amplified by the 9.1 patch. I never heard of those issues . . . BUT i will certainly search the internet as that makes PERFECT sense -- the pages that crash FS are all the pages that have web browser type links. The regular menu choices such as SETUP and CREATE A FLIGHT all work just fine.
