Nvidia Geforce 6600 256mb for fs2004: an upgrade or a h...

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have an intel penitum4 3.2gh with 1gh of Ram and 60gb HD memory; I used to have nvidia 128mb and used it with flight simulator 2004 with no problems; I have recently upgraded to graphic crad to nvidia Ge force 6600 256mb thinking that it would boost my system; to my disappointment I am facing problems after installing it; the screen freezes after sometime (5-15mn) then go black and the system reboots. I am so frustrated I went through all troubleshooting, downloaded the latest nvidia drivers and tried all possible settings with no positive results; the game is still freezing specially when you fly in complex sceneries; can you please help me with that as I know it is a known issue out there but still couldn't find the solution for it! thanks a lot in advance.Mack4

Does this happen just when using FS9, or at random with any application? Have you tried removing all drivers, shutting down, removing the card and re-seating it, then starting over? Also, I purchased a Nvidia 7800GS (AGP) card that was manufactured by PNY and had nothing but hardware problems....after receiving my 3rd replacement card, with the same issues, I decided to go to a different manufacturer. Hope things work our for you,Ken

PNY is most dreadful. I had a 6800 Ultra that kept locking up, swapped the card three times before giving up on it. I bought a BFG 6800 GT and it was great.

Hi Ken, well I didnt try it with other applications as i only dedicate my station for the fs2004 and yes i have removed the card and reseated everything, i have even re-installed XP with no result... thanks anyways.Mack4

Hi Timers, yeh it is, the only reply I got from there support is blaming the whole system but them:)

Question: have you overclocked your AGP/PCI clock on your mobo? I have a 6600 256 from Chaintech (about as generic as you can get prolly) and it won't do anything but the 66/33MHz, if I up it it does as you describe.dolph

I bought th same card as you yesterday and am having no problems at all has made a big improvement to FS9 (not FSX unfortunately)i was wondering what wattage is your power supply?i only ask because mine is only 250watts and although up to now has not caused me any problems at all(two years now) i thought the new card might just push it to the limit and i know that one of the signs of a struggling power supply IS random shut downs lockups etc that you describe. What i have done as a precaution is unplug my floppy drive (never use it)and also disconnected my rom drive DVD drive etc till i need them to try and reduce the load on my power supply(don't now weather i am being over cautious or not)but all is running well so far(fingers crossed)and its made GREAT improvements to FS9.cheers Andy

YOu did remember to plug the molex power connector into the card? And use a clean, direct feed for it from the power supply? If you did, then the problem is 99.997% certain to be the power supply to the computer. If the card itself was borked you would never even get into Windows. What power supply, and what rating?Allcott
