Fastest AGP Card for FSX

Featured Replies

For my last post of 2006, I must pose this question. What is the fastest AGP card readily available that has been performing well for FSX?I have come to two conclusions: 1. There will probably not be any AGP DX10 cards released.2. I can't afford to replace my mother board/ram for DX10 compliance. As a result, I think I might just get the best video card out there and upgrade my processor. My board will take up to a AMD X2 4800+ so this looks like it may the most affordable option.Considering my current specs, does anybody have any suggestions?

Jeff, Your processor is faster than my Intel P4 2.4 (OC'd to 3.2) but I use ATI's Radeon X850 XT Pro (AGP) in my system with 2 Gig RAM. With FSX I get a flyable 15-17 FPS in most areas outside of big cities. I throw in some autogen and use MyTrafficX for AI-craft and have a pretty enjoyable experience. The X850 XT is not the fastest AGP card however. There's also the NVIDIA 7800 GS AGP with 512 DDR3 which should give you a noticeable boost. You can check-out some comparisons here: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.htm...2=545&chart=196. Personally, I'm going the full upgrade route (Core2Duo E6600) and including a medium-range PCI-e card until the DX-10 market gets more tested and competitive. Whatever AGP card you get, I would highly recommend 512mb ram on it, unless the price point is too high between 256 vs 512 ram. I once asked the a question about vid mem and FS to one of the MS developers of FS, and he said, "it's better to have more video memory on a slow card, than it is to have a fast card with less video memory". I think for FSX at least, you will get better results with the 512 ram.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2530 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian

I am waiting for hardware to improve before I build a new Windows Vista PC with a DX10 compliant video card, so I wanted to hang on to my "old" computer for as long as possible. So, to fly FSX with a TripleHead2Go (which requires high resolution), I did a little research on AGP video cards. I settled on a (BFG Tech brand) NVIDIA GeForce 7800GS. With this video card, I am able to use my TripleHead2Go at a resolution of something like 3072x1024 with frame rates of 20 fps in FSX. I occassionally get fps as high as 30-40 fps. Not sure I am busting forum rules, but here is a link to the card I have:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143046FYI I have an Intel Pentium 4 3.2 Northwood 3.2GHz Socket 478 Processor & 2 GB RAM (Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)).Joe

Greetings Jeff,I just went thru the same exact process.Nvidia's 7800GS is the faste4st AGP card out there. It is not made in 512 mgb only 256. I have an ATI X850XT PE and test reports show the 7800 a bit faster. The reason I purchased the 7800 is because i AM UPGRADING TO THE 3HEAD2GO AND NEEDED IT.sORRY about the capsBest regardsAndrewDamascus PaPS EWiz.com its 219 vs newegg 239 net after rebate. also ships free with ewiz

I am VERY happy to read your post. I just ordered this exact card and it shipped yesterday (1/12). Can't wait now to try it. Best card I could find for the money and with the $30 rebate - can't be beat!Ed

I am starting to believe it is not available in the states. In this thread there is conflicting information - will a 256MB card perform better in FSX than a 512MB card?At NewEgg, the beefiest cards with 512MB GDDR2 are the 1650pro and the 7600GS. There is also a x1650XT with 512 GDDR3.So would the 7800GS with 256 GDDR3 be faster in FSX than a 7600GS with 512MB GDDR2? What is the difference?

Hi Jeff,<>I'd be amazed if it wasn't available in the US. Search for Powercolor - they certainly produce a X1950Pro 512Mb. Mine is a Sapphire. Not a company I've heard of before but the graphics card industry is very volatile. This comparison suggests the X1950 is more powerful than the 7800GS. Of course numbers are one thing and actual performance is another. Food for thought though :-) www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=382&card2=471Cheers,
