February 3, 200719 yr Hi, I'm considering buying a Dell Ultrasharp 2407 monitor. The quoted refresh rates are 16ms black to white and 6ms grey to grey. Could anyone please tell me if these are adequate for fs and also if anyone has this monitor what is your opinion of it.Many thanks,Pete.
February 4, 200719 yr I have the older 2405 model (which is pretty much identical in every way feature wise, except the stand is shaped a little differently, the 2405 weighs a bit more, and the 2407 added HDCP playback capability.I LOVE my 2405... So much so that I bought 2 2007FP's to sit on either side of it for nice panoramic computing. A buddy just bought a pair of 2407's and is in love with them...Oh, and personally, I wouldn't bother with their new 27" model... Yes, it's 3 inches larger, but with the exact same resolution as the 24" which means worse dot pitch. The 30" has also come down in price quite a bit, but you better have one heck of a video card to drive a game at the 30"'s native resolution.I've never been a fan of Dell's computers, but their LCDs are top notch! And if you have a SINGLE dead pixel on delivery, just contact them and they'll swap it out for you.--Mike

February 5, 200719 yr Well I've had mine about 2 weeks now and I'm pretty impressed with the whole deal. Go get one.Cheers,Opjock

A buddy>just bought a pair of 2407's and is in love with them...That would be me. :)The two 2407s sitting side-by-side are S C H W E E E E E E T ! ! ! I've been flying the PMDG planes, PSS 757, feelThere 737, and man, it is a totally new experience flying the virtual cockpits on these things with the two Dells. And it's an absolute snap to set up too - as long as you have a dual DVI out video card. The only thing I want to try and figure out is how to adjust the display so that the displays are offset a bit... not sure if it's possible tho.As far as refresh rates go, I don't notice any flicker whatsoever, unless I'm flying in a high density area and FS just bogs down for whatever reason. BTW, still running on FS9, cause I'm able to get 20 FPS everywhere except takeoff and landing with both monitors on, full detail cranked all the way up.>I've never been a fan of Dell's computers, but their LCDs are>top notch! And if you have a SINGLE dead pixel on delivery,>just contact them and they'll swap it out for you.Well - not so sure about the one dead pixel. Dell's official policy is it has to have more than 5 - and tech support asked me numerous times a few days ago how many I had on the one monitor I planned on exchanging. Fortunately I got the exchange taken care of (it does have a stuck pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, so that's a no-go as far as I'm concerned).
February 5, 200719 yr Hey Guy,Is there a FPS hit, by adding two 24" monitor and spanning them across over a single 24" monitor? and if so.,..how much of a hit?Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
February 5, 200719 yr There definitely is a hit, because FS is trying to render about twice as much ground scenery due to the added width of the display. But it's not a huge hit to me - where I'd get around 10FPS before now I see probably 6 - 7. But that's typically in very dense airports like PHNL (with the freeware scenery found here), KLGA, etc... haven't tried KEWR yet tho, which was by far the worst performance hog I had before upgrading.Other than the hit on the ground, it seems very smooth once you get airborne. I still see around 20FPS climbing out on departure, but do have the cloud details turned down somewhat... still use ASV6 tho for real-time updates.I also notice more blurries on the ground because the engine has to work harder at keeping up, but it's tolerable, because I don't switch to the external views anymore - strictly keep the views inside the virtual cockpit. Textures do sharpen up once FS catches up, but swiveling around and constantly looking out the left, then the right, then back again will cause it to have to work harder it seems.Keep in mind I'm running with pretty much max everything, 100 miles viewing distance. I may try turning down some of the detail if I can't live with the slower FPS on takeoff / landing, but for now, I'm really enjoying the added eye candy and situational awareness. One other note - I got very fluid performance in the Flight 1 C-172 while taking off from a smaller airport - around 15 - 20 FPS, so it is definitely possible to get good performance out of the two monitors if you're not in a very dense area. System is an Athlon 4000+ (not DC), GF6800 Ultra w/256MB RAM, 2GB system RAM, Seagate 7200RPM SATA 300GB HD - monitor / video card set to run at 3840x1200, spanning both monitors.
February 6, 200719 yr Anybody consider or have the Dell 27" or the 30"? How would either one fare with FSX?Abe
February 6, 200719 yr Author Many thanks for all the replies, looks as though the credit card's going to have to see daylight again. The system I'm putting together to drive the monitor (plus a couple of others on a seperate video card) consists of an E6700 DC Processor, 2gb Corsair XMS RAM, 8800 GTS Graphics and a Western Digital 150gb 10,000rpm HD (for FS only). Sometime after that little lot I might even consider getting FSX.Pete.
