October 18, 200718 yr Hi all,I've recently bought a new PC for FSX (Q6600 + ASUS P5KC)In Bios, "speedstep" is disabled (it's the default setting) but I see with various utilities (CPUz, Asus AI) that the clock is 1600(multiplier 6x) when idle, and it goes up to 2400 (multiplier 9x)under load. This is just what the processor is supposed to do with speedsteb enabled, but how is it possible with speedstep disabled?Any thoughts? Thanks in advanceFulvio
October 18, 200718 yr Fulvio, is there any particular reason you wish to disable the throttling of your CPU?? It conserves power which allows things to run cooler. I've had no issues with Speedstep interfering with overclocking. Can't answer your question as to why its still throttling with Speedstep disabled. Enabling and disabling Speedstep on my mother board works as intended (i.e. cpu throttles or runs at full speed).

If you go into the Power proerties in the Control Panel and select the Always On option it will disable Speed Step. Right click your desktop > Click properties > Click Screen Saver > Power button > Change the Power Scheme to always on. But I'm with sargeski, I leave it enabled, even with an OC as it has it's benefits. October 19, 200718 yr Author Hi,thanks for the suggestions.Really I forgot to tell that I had set up a profile in power ngmt, based on "Home/office desk", in which the only difference was the monitor switching off after 5 minutes.Furthermore, I had already tried to set the profile to "always on", but the processor was still throttling when idle and running full speed under load.Actually, I didn't reboot after the setting, and maybe this was the reason...Just to be clear, I too prefer to have speedstep enabled, as it saves heath and power, provided it gives no problem when o'clocking (that I'm going to try soon...)Fulvio
October 19, 200718 yr Moderator This is my first overclock so before I got into it I haunted all the overclock forums that I could find and the consensus of opinion by the experienced crowd is to leave speedstep disabled for overclocking or you defeat the purpose of the o/c.From what I've seen, at idle there is no appreciable difference between the o/c and the speedstep as far as temp and power go. My o/c idles around 32C with an ambient of 25C with or w/o speedstep.BUT as I always say, if you're happy with you're setup, then that's all that matters. For me, I leave it disabled.VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.6Evga 680i A1 with P30 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpgRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/ RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
